(Merops apiaster)

The European bee-eater (Merops apiaster) is a near passerine bird in the bee-eater family Meropidae. The genus name Merops is Ancient Greek fort ;bee-eater, and apiaster is Latin, also meaning bee-eate from apis,. It breeds in southern Europe and in parts of north Africa and western Asia. It is strongly migratory, wintering in tropical Africa. This species occurs as a spring overshoot north of its range, with occasional breeding in northwest Europe.

This species, like other bee-eaters, is a richly coloured, slender bird. It has brown and yellow upper parts, whilst the wings are green and the beak is black. It can reach a length of 27–29 cm (10.6–11.4 in), including the two elongated central tail feathers. Sexes are alike. Female tends to have greener rather than gold feathers on shoulders. Non-breeding plumage is much duller and with a blue-green back and no elongated central tail feathers. Juvenile resembles a non-breeding adult, but with less variation in the feather colours. Adults begin to moult in June or July and complete the process by August or September. There is a further moult into breeding plumage in winter in Africa.

These bee-eaters are gregarious—nesting colonially in sandy banks, preferably near river shores, usually at the beginning of May. They make a relatively long tunnel, in which they lay five to eight spherical white eggs around the beginning of June. Both male and female care for the eggs, which they brood for about three weeks. They also feed and roost communally.

During courtship, the male feeds large items to the female while eating the small ones himself. Most males are monogamous, but occasional bigamy has been encountered. Their typical call is a distinctive, mellow, liquid and burry prreee or prruup.

The ongoing clashes between Bodos and Bangladeshis in Asom owe its genesis from the illegal infiltration of lakhs of Bangladeshis who have over the years inundated the fertile land and tribal belts of Asom and other North Eastern States. Contrary to the popular media reports, this is not a communal clash but a clash between indigenous (khilinqia) Assamese (Asomiva) and Bangladeshi infiltrators. Right from the Part1tion of India on communal grounds, tl1e Pakistani rulers/dictators have their lustful eyes on the fertile tracts of North Eastern region of lndia, joined with rest of Ind1a w1th a small strip of land called Chicken Neck. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and others have observed way back in '70s and after the creation of Bangladesh by none other than Sheikh Mujubur Rehman that they need this piece of land for economic reasons and as leben sraum (living space) to place their population whose abominable growth rate (Grow more Muslims or Muslims' demographic explosion) will even made pigs and rats to shame. Nevertheless, they must not be ashamed of th1s piggy growth of Muslims' populat1on because they have a wonderful Dharamsala called Ind1a, the blessed Bharat which have smce t1me immemonal has been providing shelter and succour to the displaced/stateless peoples (read refugees). But these breed of people 1s quite different from earlier ones wt1o are not coming to Ind1a because they are berng persecuted (lrke Jews, Parsis etc) but coming here w1th their Great Islamic Demographic Invasion Game Plan, knowing fully well that rnnocent Hindus w11l be too secular/tolerant to get a whiff of it and by the time they get to know about 1t, 1t will be too late by then. .

If any body is to blame for the present sorry state of affairs in Asom and North East India, jt is the successive Congress Governments-both at the Centre and the State. It was a Congress Minister Abdul Muh1b Mazumder who drafted the infamous ll/egal M1gration (Determmation by Tnbunal) or IM(DT) Act, with the blessmgs of Smt. Indira Gandhi in 1983, which has been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of lndta on July 12,2005; terming the ongomg Bangladeshi inMtrations as d1rect and silent Demographic InvasiOn of Asom and subsequently North Eastern region of India with strong strictures to the Central Govt for failing to render 1ts const1tut10nal duty under Arttcle 355. .

In Quran, there is mentioned two pronged strategy to rule ov er Kafirs/non-Muslims viz. Jihad (waging war, if the enemy/ kafir is weak) and Hijra t (through migration/gradual demographic invasion as done by Mohammed in 622AD when he fled from Mecca to Medina-if the enemyjkafir is strong}. Quran also makes mandatory for its followers/ Muslims {Allah Ke Sande) to employ every possible means to convert a Dar -ui-Harb (Enemy Land or where non-Muslims are in majority} into Dar-ui-Islam (land of Peace or where Muslims will be in commanding majority), by either through Jihad (as being done by Indian Mujahideens/ SIMI/ HUJI/ LeT I AI Qaeda etc) or through Hij rat (as being done by Bangladeshis). So far from being an economic or political issue, the Bangladeshi migrations into Asom and North East of India and others have a clear cut RELIGIOUS/COMMUNAL angle or goal. [f so, why Govt of lndta IS not curbtng 1t7 S1mple, they voted for Congress Party Govt. and they were g1vcn Raksha Kavach like the then notonous IM (OT) Act and as a result 7 01stncts of Asom bordering Bangladesh became Musl1m maJonty distrrcts wl1ere tl1ey openly used to ho1st the Pakistani flag and shouted Pakistan Zindabad and Hindust han Murdabad anti-national slogans. Yet, cowards l1ke late H1teswar Sa1k1as and Tarun Gogois w1ll take no action agarnst them, because these desi Congress CMs have deep love towards videshi Bangladeshis votes. The other CM from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) who became CM twice and who was also the mam leader of the six year long Anti-Fore1gner Agitations ( 1979-85) Prafulla Kumar Mahanta ts also to be blamed but al least he f1led an aff1davit in the Supreme Court on behalf of the Govt of Asom that IM(DT) Act should be removed from Asom the srngle State of India only where it 1s applicable m order to protect 1llegal Bangladeshi vote bank and 1n the rest of Ind1a a more stringent Foreigner's Act, 1946 was in operation, mak1ng the b1asness of Congress Govt clear. .

Pollen of the common cattail. Native people collect the pollen and mixed with starches and used as flour. I have never tried this myself, but I have collected the pollen before. Huge amount of pollen can be collect by placing a plastic bag over the inflorescence and shaking the head.

The rhizome can also be eate, by just boiling or ground into flour. They can be a little hard to dig up but have an interesting flavor boiled. The only complaint I have is that they tend to be way too fiberous and probably best ground into flour.
