....and regrets

It is not the earthquake to kill, are the houses.

Time of evaluations and regrets, now, as always after an earthquake.

In Italy we spend more on reconstruction rather than prevention, it is also true that it is difficult to prevent in what we have to oldest.

Curious and tragic is to observe that churches of 1200 have a wall fall only and the houses have crumbled entirely.

Restructuring in Italy today have very strict laws, but many modifications of the houses were in years past.

The houses of the old town centers, very large and sparsely populated, have been reduced, divided into smaller apartments, opening windows, doors, they certainly have weakened the supporting structure.

The god of money and speculation always commands, above everyone and everything.

"In Italy we build earthquake resistant only after a severe earthquake"

It is the case of Norcia, Umbria Italy after the earthquakes of 1979 and 1997 had reconstructed respecting the seismic provisions. Just 17 kilometers from the linear distance from the epicenter of the earthquake of August 24, no casualties.

Damage to churches and houses but no casualties.....

6.04.09 Earthquake in L'Aquila

On a walk around Linwood Cemetery with my Flickr friend. January 2022 Christchurch New Zealand.

History of the Linwood Cemetery :

A lot of headstones have fallen and were damaged by the Christchurch Earthquakes in 2010-11.

The cemetery was the first Christchurch cemetery located outside the town ‘on sanitary grounds’ and is situated on what was once a large sand dune.

It was at one time called Christchurch Cemetery or Sandilands Cemetery, on account of the sandy soil, very suitable for digging. It has many large and interesting monuments, most of which are to the memory of early residents of the eastern suburbs. It has a Jewish section, including graves resited from the 19th century Jewish cemetery in Hereford Street. There are many notable people buried in the cemetery, along with a number of 'colourful' characters.

In 1884 the Council approved the construction of a tramway to the cemetery from the corner of Cashel and High streets and by 1885 had built a tramway hearse. Although now covered by asphalt, tram tracks survive beneath the main pathway within the cemetery.

Remembering victims of Kermanshah, Iran, Earthquake of Nov. 2017

A more recent shot of Kaikoura (aerial shot from Sep 2016). It's been badly affected by today's earthquake and aftershocks, and has all access cut off.

There was a M7.5 near the top of the South Island (NZ) at 2 mins past midnight. It woke up the whole country. It woke me through 2 sleeping tablets, and everything was rocking and rolling big time.

I'm lucky I'm far enough away from the epicenter that I only feel the bigger ones. I've got shell mobiles and other hanging things around the place that swing whenever a quake comes through. There are lots of ones that I wouldn't notice, but they do.

Hold this drawing in your hand, it is small and fragile enough to create an intimate reaction to breathing as its' face shakes and rattles delicately. Video coming soon!

OMG Wow! Just felt my first earthquake! It woke me up as my bed was shaking (thought someone was under my bed LOL)! Wow! Freaky! I'm hearing now that it was spread throughout Southern Ontario Canada and Northern USA!

"A magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit central Canada this afternoon, rattling buildings from Windsor to Montreal and several U.S. states.

The epicentre of the quake was in Quebec, 61 kilometres north of Ottawa, according to U.S. Geological Survey, and struck at 1:41 p.m.EDT.

The Ottawa newsroom was evacuated at about 1:43 p.m. The Toronto newsroom also shook.

Environment Minister Jim Prentice was doing an interview with CTV at its Ottawa bureau on the 14th floor of the World Exchange Plaza in downtown Ottawa when the tremour struck.

"I was on the air and suddenly my chair was moving," he said afterwards. "Fortunately I was at the end."

The sidewalks quickly filled with workers who decided to evacuate their buildings.

Twitter users as far away as Springfield, Mass. and Traverse City, Mich. reported feeling tremors. A Globe reporter in Montreal said that city also shook."

UPDATE

Reports say it's rated at 5.5! And a Second quake!

Toronto has just experienced an earthquake. The seats were rumbling at 1:38 p.m. Thursday as a mild earthquake hit Toronto.

An 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit Toronto's downtown this afternoon with a mild shaking. Sitting at my desk reporting I watched my computer screen doing a jig on the desk.

Twitter feeds say that Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto all felt the quake at the same time. The Ottawa Globe and Mail has evacuated their offices. Twitter feeds are stating that it was felt for 30 seconds in Markham and Thornhill.

The mild rumbling shook the floors in my office. There is no damage in my area. As news comes in this will be updated.

"TORONTO — There are reports of a possible earthquake shaking buildings across parts of southern Ontario and Quebec.

The Internet is abuzz with people saying they felt the earth rumble in cities across the province, including Windsor, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

The quake seemed to last for about 30 seconds in Ottawa and rattled downtown buildings, homes in west-end Ottawa and government offices across the Ottawa River in Gatineau, Que.

Stephen Taylor, a political pundit in Ottawa, used his Twitter feed to describe what the tremors felt like.

"I was in an elevator when the earthquake hit," Taylor wrote. "Debris hitting the top of it, walls scraping ... fun stuff."

Witnesses in downtown Toronto also described feeling a prolonged tremour that shook desks, rattled bookshelves and caused paintings on walls to shake.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The website for the U.S. Geological Survey displayed a map showing a recent event registering 5.5 on the Richter scale had occurred near the Ontario-Quebec boundary, but no other details were immediately available.

Hundreds of people were milling about on downtown Ottawa streets as the Parliament buildings emptied, along with the Prime Minister's Office across the street at the Langevin Block.

Buildings across downtown Ottawa were evacuated.

A sitting of the Senate was disturbed, as were preparations by the PMO for this week's G8 and G20 summits. PMO staff were forced out onto Wellington Street.

Chinese President Hu Jintao was to arrive in Ottawa later Wednesday afternoon."

Cathedral Square on a walk around the city to catch up and earthquake rebuild. May 2018 Christchurch New Zealand

2012 is the year of an apocalypse.

If we don't get invaded by Aliens or attacked by Zombies, maybe it will happen because of natural disasters.

First I would like to express my sincere thanks for all the messages and concern from people across the world who have contacted us regarding the reported earthquake that has hit Cornwall in the last 24 hours.

Very kind of you Lindsey and Sharon😂😂😂

Amongst the concerns shown may I immediately allay your fears and inform you Sharp’s Brewery is intact and fully operational, phew.🍻🍻🍻

Yes the TV and press have reported an earthquake shook West Cornwall measuring 2.2 magnitude, some residents reported hearing a sound like thunder, Radio Pasty presenter Rebeca Wills, from Helston added “There was a low rumble and there was like a sonic boom”, if only she knew.😉

However when Horace and Hoof tiptoed across the breakfast room floor this morning with singed eyebrows, tails, and professor style looks on their faces the game was up.😉

You see mains electricity had always been low on the agenda here in Cornwall, we have always prioritised free range alcohol, so we could be as happy as pigs in you know what. 🐷🍻🍻🍻

However one night there was a meeting held by many of the local village elders and they came to the conclusion we needed these services on demand, or on tap so to speak.⚡️⚡️⚡️💡💡💡

So under the cover of darkness Hoof and Horace set off down to Poldhu Cove near Mullion quipped with a set of jump leads and a few jubilee clips.🔌🔌🔌🔦🔦🔦

As this is a fair distance from where we live H & H had to stop halfway to take on alcohol, so the boys went into a pub, Hoof had the jump leads hanging around his neck, the bar man looked at Hoof and said “don’t start anything”.🍷🍷🍷

The boys had a few games of spoof with the locals as they always do, then following a few jokes and a healthy exchange of banter Hoof packed the cash they had relieved the locals of into his saddle bags and they were on their way again.💷💷💷

H & H rocked up at Poldhu Cove an area they had staked out on several previous occasions, and had soon uncovered the transatlantic power cable that comes in there.⚡️⚡️⚡️

If you remember Marconi made his first transatlantic signal from here.📻

So in no time the boys had connected the jump leads to the T A cable and into a near by sub station and no sooner than you could say Thomas Edison and there was an almighty flash followed by a big bang, unfortunately Horace had connected the positive lead to the negative cable, he had forgotten to put on his little reading glasses and white coat like a mini professor (thank you Gill).👓

Come on just a simple mistake, the leads and connections were quickly swapped over and we were good to go and the whole of Cornwall had mains electricity , and not an earthquake💡💡💡🔧🔨🔩🍻🍻🍻🐎🐷😂😂😂

Thank you all so much for viewing my images, the comments you leave are always so appreciated.

I trust you all have a lovely weekend irrespective of the weather, I will leave you with this thought, an old charecter in the village use to say “There is no such thing as bad weather, it is being inappropriately dressed”

🍻🍻🍻🍷🍷🍷🐎🐷😎😂😂😂
