Location: Between Oberlangen and Haren - Emsland - Germany.
This must be one of my favorite places along the Ems in Emsland, Germany as I shot hundreds of pictures around this area somewhere in the past. However, I guess I never tried longer exposures than say 1 second before 10pm, but his time I waited till the sun dropped down below the horizon and the moon already has taken its place.
I was standing on a small bridge where this massive stream starts to rumble its way down to a 3 meter narrow side-river which continuously flows at a fair speed right behind my back. From this image you're looking straight at this spot where I took this photograph. While this image shows where this narrow side-river is heading - taken at daylight with a compact.
I securely mounted the camera on my tripod and prepared it for long exposures. In this case I took 3 shots in a row, starting from 10s at f/22 to 20s at f/22 and 30 at f/22.
I carefully blended the three resulting NEF Raw files into a single HDR, ready to be tonemapped and extracted to 16-but .tiff files.. Indeed I needed at least two tonemapped extractions - and manually blend them together in Photoshop - to get closer to the result I visualized.
This is where the real post fun begins: blending layers together with corresponding layer masks to paint away unwanted portions and keep the ones that are useful. After enhancing local color tone contrasts I started with a high-pass filter sharpening in Vivid layer mode. To get rid of regular sensor-noise and the extra noise that was caused by the tonemapping process> I then painted out a view tiny unwanted color patterns from the sky and the surface of the river with the Blur tool.
A couple of selective color adjustment layers were used to bring back some extra detail in the weeds, woods, rocks and trees. I then duplicated this layer and set it to Soft Light layer mode with a 65% opacity. Finally I used the Stamp tool in Darken mode to clone blue portions from the sky above the trees to get rid of slight Halo effects which were also caused by tonemapping. A final Unsharp Mask and Sharpen Edge sharpening method was used to give the whole thing a bit more punch on low resolution copies for the web or screen.
Tech info: 10-20-30s, f/22, 12mm, ISO 100
