Montepulciano
Montepulciano: The Winery
In the heart of Montepucliano, just a few steps from Piazza Grande, the main square in town, below the elegant Palazzo Ricci, a Renaissance palace commissioned by Cardinal Giovanni Ricci (1498-1574) to the great Sienese architect Baldassarre Peruzzi (1481-1536), there is the monumental Cantina de’ Ricci, one of the most ancient and beautiful in the world, which is accessed through an impressive equestrian staircase that gradually leads the visitor to the discovery of an enchanted place. Here, for many centuries, the now extinct Ricci Family has lovingly cared and treasured one of the most demanded products of these lands: the wine.
The Cellar
For those visiting the Wine Cellar, excavated into the soft tufaceous soil, roofed by a monumental succession of arches and sustained by massive pillars which together remind us of a Romano-Gothic Cathedral, the sight is absolutely breathtaking.
The visitor will walk through the silent corridors bordered by several caves, laboriously dug out of the tuff, which host, at an optimal natural temperature, rows and rows of huge precious Slavonian oak casks, perfectly preserved, where thousands of hectolitres of the delicious Vino Nobile are stored. In dozens of neatly lined barriques are refined the best wines obtained from grapes ripened under the golden sun of Tuscany, in the well-kept vineyards which luxuriant crown the fertile and gorgeous hills around Montepulciano sloping gently toward the Valdichiana valley on the East, and stretching until the edge of the Valdorcia valley on the West.
A visit to this Wine Cellar is a journey throughout time and history; here you will find the very essence of the sweet land of Tuscany: the wine, which the Etruscans, our distant ancestors, centuries before the Christian era, already took care of, worshipped and drank, with passion and perseverance, in happiness and joy !

This image was found in a forgotten e-file. A pretty serious storm had arrived a few km south of the ongoing Arabian Regional horse show (luckily being held indoors). This is a stormy area where, a few years earlier, a deadly storm had hit nearby Pine Lake. This picture was nervously taken from the Pine Lake overpass where it crossed the QE highway.
P.I.E./PACIFIC INTERMOUNTAIN EXPRESS became the largest trucking company in the world in 1956. The story starts in 1927 when Ray V. Lilenquest joined his brothers Bill and Les to run two Model A Fords providing service from Pocatello, ID, to Idaho Falls. Many changes occurred over the early years, with P.I.E. finally taking shape from three consolidated companies in 1940. By 1946 P.I.E. had 535 employees and was growing rapidly through many acquisitions in the late 1940s and 1950s. With the purchase of West Coast Freight and System Tank Lines in 1954, P.I.E became the largest hauler of petroleum products in the world. Service extended from the west coast to St. Louis and Chicago. P.I.E. employed virtually every type of available road equipment, and also designed some of their own dromedary tractors. By the mid 1960s P.I.E. extended service to the east coast through more acquisitions, having 67 terminals in 29 states. In 1973 the company was purchased by IU International, and in 1983 merged with Ryder Truck Lines, forming Ryder/P.I.E Nationwide. In 1985 the company was sold again, with the name shortened to P.I.E. Nationwide. By 1989 loses were staggering, and the company was sold again, absorbing Transcon Lines. Loses continued, and in 1990 P.I.E. filed Chapter XI bankruptcy. An attempt to scale back operations failed, with one of America’s most famous common carriers closing their doors forever, but leaving many fond memories.

I am so pumped up! after months of waiting, tax season is finally here! bring it on! Tax forms are final and e-file is working great.
The only down side is that I will have less time to spend checking your streams... I will try to find some time for sure...

As I was beginning doing panos, I did a lot of trial and error. Many time over I was asking myself why I was having so much problems and not getting any results. I read all the tutorials and everything seemed nice looking on their image, but this didn't explain why I was failing. I wished that I could get rid of some of the unknown; have them process my images (and know if they were ok and my process was the problem) or process their images (knowing what result they got, I could practice the process on better foundations).
I've therefore decided to release all the images used to generate this pano as Creative Common Attribution - Derivative (obviously) - Non Commercial - Share Alike license.
I'm hoping that it may help some people try out hugin (or other pano software) and get their hands a little dirty. Then, go out and shoot some.
Also made a Stereographic Projection.
Technical information:
Shot with a 10-22 at 10mm on a nodal ninja 3. The lens\head has been calibrated and is under 1mm from it's NPP
Shot in 3 rows + nadir in this order (i.e. file order) 8 horizontal, 4 aiming up slightly, 4 aiming down slightly and one nadir
Everything was taken with 3 exposures: 0 -2 and +2
The equirectangular was done in Hugin with no retouching\masking\manual blending. It's straight out from hugin to panomatix. Then, from panomatix to flickr.
Apart from panomatix for the HDR part, there was no post processing at all.
Raw images can be found here.
I'm learning and want to improve. Don't hesitate to post constructive criticism!
