The British Touring Car Championship, Round 1-3 held on the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit on 30th & 31st March 2013
The long awaited start of the British Touring Car Championship was held as normal on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit. This year's event not only happened over the Easter weekend but also took place in freak weather conditions which included sub-zero temperatures with snow, sleet and sun all in one day.
Brands Hatch is my favourite UK circuit, and the Indy configuration is ideally suited to the fast and frenetic pace of a BTCC meeting. Wherever you end up around the circuit, you are never far from the action and following the race is straightforward even without the large TVs which unusually were not at the venue this time.
A reasonable size crowd turned up on the Saturday to witness the first qualifying session of 2013. It had been snowing on and off for most of the day, so it wasn't be big surprise that the session was affected by the weather conditions. The times set during the earliest part of the session were always going to be the best as the snow intensified and further improvement was impossible.
Even with the difficult conditions and restricted time available the best drivers and cars came to the fore with Andrew Jordan narrowly holding off the factory Honda's and MG's to claim pole by 10th of a second. Gordon Shedden took second with Jason Plato in third. Frank Wrathall looked fast, but his best time, before the snow arrived was disallowed due to a ride height violation.
Race day started with even colder temperatures, but the sky was blue and the sun was out. The weather had not put off the crowds and Brands Hatch was full by 9.00am in anticipation of the exciting new season. 2013 had brought a large entry with 32 cars registered and 28 actually entered for the first 3 rounds. The introduction of the soft option tyre also add extra intrigue and strategy to the action.
Race one started with Gordon Shedden sliding sideways down Paddock Hill bend and unbelievably being missing by everyone else. Matt Neal also picked up damage early on and both Honda's had to visit the pits for running repairs during the race which pitched them both a lap down.
At the front Rob Austin was making the most of his soft option tyres and took and held the lead for most of the race with Jason and then Andrew Jordan overtaking him as the tyres went off. What appeared to be a straightforward victory for Jason was thrown into doubt when Andrew Jordan made a last corner lunge at Clark Curve which resulted in hitting Jason and both cars sailing through the gravel trap and rejoining on to the finishing straight. Jason held on to the victory and Andrew was sufficiently ahead of Rob Austin to maintain 2nd place.
The stand out driving performance was that of Frank Wrathall who managed to drive his Dynojet Toyota Avensis from the back of the grid up to 6th place.
Race two was dominated by Jason Plato. Even the late safety car period was unable to upset his rhythm. Jason was followed home again by Andrew Jordan's Civic with Gordon Shedden in third. Post race Jeff Smith was promoted to third after Gordon's car was disqualified for technical infringements.
Frank Wrathall's eventful day continued with him being involved in pushing Colin Turkington and Rob Austin off at Paddock Hill and Druids respectively, only to end up in the Druids gravel trap himself after some rubbing with Matt Neal.
Race three saw most of the main players having to use the soft option tyre. Chris Evans picked the 8 for the reverse grid set up which saw Mat Jackson take pole position. Gordon Shedden was starting dead last after his problems in the previous race.
We watched the start on the race from along side the grid and had started walking around the rear of the grandstand when we heard the noise of a big crash at Paddock Hill. By the time we reach the viewing area at Paddock Hill bend the race was under safety car control. The incident had involved Dave Newsham's Toyota and Rob Austin's Audi. The Audi had definitely come off worst but both drivers were out of the cars and seemed to be OK. Hopefully Rob Austin's team can rebuild the wreck before Donnington.
The Honda's finally seemed to come alive in this race, with Matt Neal taking and the holding on to the lead and Gordon Shedden driving through the whole field from last place on the grid up to second. Given a couple more laps he might have been able to challenge his team mate. Jason Plato finished in 5th with the hard tyre shodd cars of Sam Tordoff and Adam Morgan taking 3rd and 4th place respectively.
So the first round of the 2013 championship finishes in the late afternoon sunshine with Jason Plato leading Andrew Jordan at the top of the standings with the Pirtex racing team actually ahead on the factory Honda team in the team table.
Our day was a great success with our first attempt at a bar-b-q in the back of the car at lunchtime working well. The journey into and out of the circuit was as good as could be expected and the entertainment was excellent all day. Roll on Donnington!
