We are riding the Dunwich Dynamo - a challenging free-entry overnight 120 mile bicycle ride on-tarmac from London Fields in Hackney, London to the Suffolk beach at Dunwich. We will return to London via the organised coach/trucking. My riding partner is my brother-in-law.

It’s not a race. It’s unsupported. There’s no van following. It’s a long way. It starts at around 20:00 tonight. It's quite an adventure.

In a continuing effort to un-clutter my Bertin campeur, I picked up this Soubitez dynamo at the Cirque swap. This is mounted on the chainstays behind the bottom bracket and when engaged contacts the center of the tire. Although I believe this one is probably from the 70's versions of this were around as early as the late 1940's in France.

Strobist: Two SB600's, one camera right, one camera left. (I think I had on camera flash on too, but dialed down.) Both SB's were using "Tupperware" diffusers. Note: I would have preferred to use umbrellas, but we were getting occasional wind gusts.

In the 1880's the Barber Paper Mills at Georgetown, Ontario, expanded and required more power than the 75-horse-power, water-driven turbine could provide. The owners chose to use a dynamo to harness the energy of the Credit River, and hired the Brush Electric Company of Cleveland, Ohio, to fabricate a 100-horse-power electric generator and a 60-horse-power, direct-current motor, the largest built by the company to that point. Housed downstream from the mills in a stone building, the dynamo went into operation in 1888. The dynamo was the first plant in Canada to generate hydroelectric power for use in industrial production.

Here is the view looking downstream from this building:

Second Generation Generator

This 19th Century dynamo has sat in the Student Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since before I started going to the Flea Market – at least 25 years. The latest Patent date is 1882, and the dynamo was one of several installed in Boston in 1886. This is a primitive generator from the early years of electric light. The brushes and commutator mark it as a dynamo, a direct current generator. This is the device seen in the old photo in Analog Digital Digital.

Dynamo Dresden v FC St Pauli (November 2006)

The Dynamo is an aggressively angled starfighter, named for its ridiculous leaps forward in self-sustaining power. While it might not be the ideal ride for planet-hopping, she's certainly capable. That's what the twin snack pods are for.

This is the first model I've really felt proud of. The build has the perfect amount of structural stability to support its awkward shape. The landing gear is actually functional, with the back legs twisting up to become part of the rear greebling. Oh, and the cockpit does seat a pilot, I just haven't given it one yet.

I decided to swap the bottle dynamo setup to the XO-3, since it is my primary bike and I don't intend on getting a dyno wheel for this bike. Seems to work ok, but it's hard to test lighting systems during the long days of summer!
