a friend gifted me two big skeins of grey wool, so i knit up a simple seed stitch cowl until the yarn ran out. then i decided to dip dye half of it in some logwood.

Went to visit some lovely friends who run a business selling hand-dyed fabrics. They had put aside some bottles of left-over dye this week for my kids to do some tye-dying on T-shirts.
This is not our results (sadly), but some of their stock ready for sale at the Melbourne Quilt Show.
I made this cake for a young lady's birthday. She requested something with a peace sign theme but left it up to me. I thought peace signs, tie dye, hearts etc. and then saw a wonderful cake here on Flickr made by sweetcakesbyrebecca. This cake ended up being totally inspired by her cake. I just loved the look of her groovy style lettering and flowers. I like this cake alot but still think hers is better! It was my first time marbling the fondant and when I first twisted the colors together and started rolling they didn't look blended enough so I squished it up a bit more and rolled and they ended up blending too much! Oh well, there was nothing I could do about it as I knew I couldn't keep balling it up and re-rolling and I didn't want to toss it and start over. Its a 6 inch marble cake with italian meringue buttercream and MMF. I also made coordinating cupcakes in the next picture.
Dying these blue was a headace. The rightmost gem has one drop of blue dye (about 300 microliters) while the left most gem has about 150. Without the light, the gem on the right is nearly opaque.
these bits are in the Wollongong city gallery permanent collection. They are made with cardboard, fabric, thread, natural plant dyes, collage, quilting, banana plant fibres, paperbark and mixed media.
Yarn is Kona Sport Superwash Merino from Dharma Trading Company. It was first overdyed with acid dye. Then soaked in vinegar bath, left barely damp, and sprinkled with acid dye/salt from salt shaker. Wrapped in plastic and microwaved for four minutes, rested for four minutes, microwaved for four minutes again.

Got these tie-dye chucks at converse outlet sometime last spring, $19.99.
I usually abhor anything greatful dead-ish, but these were kinda cool.
This month's fiber subscription was about solar dyeing, but since i have no deck to put jars on, I simply microwaved it. I used my own powdered dyes, not the ones provided, and I really like it. It's just so easy to dye this way and I love the variegated colouring. Pic of the dried fiber to come soon!
I did a little marigold dyeing this weekend and this is the result. The wool that I dyed was white, as shown on the far left, and became the exact color of mustard after dyeing it with marigolds. I also dyed a small loop of ecru cotton embroidery floss and it turned out a pretty lemon yellow. Pretty cool huh? The fabric has retained the slightest hint of flower smell, but far less than I antcipated. (which is good)
