Man in a chai shop

Dwarka, Gujarat, India (2015)

Morning air was nearly still or as still as island air by the sea could be. Barefooted man was sitting on a wooden cart at the end of the pier, gazing far into the boundless sea. He was at ease, not observing the noise brought by passengers coming off the wooden ferryboat.

Watching boats come and go brings him back to the days when he was going to the sea himself. Only those who spent countless years at the sea know the true feeling of a boatman’s freedom. At that minute he was far and free, in the wide waters, endless skies and Mother Nature with her sundry moods.

Pier is his secret escape.

One of the most important temples in Hindu iconography, the Dwarkadhish temple, also known as the Jagat Mandir and occasionally spelled "Dwarakadheesh" (Gujarati: દ્વારકાધીશ મન્દિર; Sanskrit and Hindi: द्वारकाधीश मन्दिर), is dedicated to Lord Krishna, who is worshipped here by the name Dwarkadhish, or 'King of Dwarka'. The main shrine of the 5-storied building, supported by 72 pillars, is known as Jagat Mandir or Nija Mandir.

Archaeological findings suggest it to be 2,200 - 2,000 years old. Temple was enlarged in the 15th- 16th century.

According to traditions, the original temple was believed to have been built by Krishna's grandson, Vajranabha, over the hari-griha (Lord Krishna's residential place). The temple became part of the Char Dham pilgrimage considered sacred by Hindus in India, after Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th century Hindu theologian and philosopher, visited the shrine. The other three being comprising Rameswaram, Badrinath and Puri.

This shot was taken from an upper floor of an adjacent house. Due to very less space at the ground floor of the temple complex, no good shot is possible from within the temple complex. Due to tall structures all around, any afternoon or morning shot cast very long shadows. Hence noon was chosen as the time to take this shot.

Bus driver made a sharp U-turn waking me up from the slumbering. Warm, bright and sunny day; cloudless blue skies and emerald green waters; small fishing village with a temple on the shore and couple of shack shops selling colorful balloons and souvenir statues of the Hindu deities; few stray dogs and non-existing bus stop at the end of the sandy road appeared in the window as I got up.

I have reached another sea. That very sentence stuck in my head the minute this fascinating picture at the shore of the Arabian Sea revealed itself. The tranquility of the place felt magic and hypnotic. I was deeply enthralled by the charm of it and didn't learn the name of the village; later, realizing that, I decided to leave it that way.

Reaching another sea may seem like an ordinary event, however this time it felt different, a dream like. Even now, when I close my eyes, I still see and feel the alchemy of it. Perhaps I was dreaming…

The Jamnagar & Dwarka Railway was a 19th century meter gauge railway in the Nawanagar State in Gujarat (India). In 1942, it had a total length of 325 km. It was merged into the Saurashtra Railway in April 1948

I used to walk down to Dwarka Stores with my grandfather to buy sweets with my pocket money when I was a little girl. This store has been a staple throughout my childhood and again when I got married and my own children used to cycle down here to pick up things for me occasionally.

Camels take a break beachside in Dwarka, soaking in the sun where the river Gomati meets with the Arabian sea on India's west coast.

They’re in demand for short rides beachside with pilgrims visiting the historic Dwarkadish temple and its environs, and nearby places associated with the Mahabharata.

Somewhere near lies the Dwarka of Lord Krishna, underwater.

Dwarka (major Hindu pilgrimage site), Gujarat, India 2007

Every day, early in the morning this man searched the water for coins or jewelry that the pilrims would throw in. He would walk back and forth, looking carefully in the water and on shore, to see if anyome was throwing anything in.

Mathura is believed to be the birthplace of Krishna and is one of the Sapta Puri, the seven cities considered holy by Hindus: Ayodhya (Rama), Mathura (Krishna), Haridwar (Vishnu), Varanasi (Shiva), Kanchipuram (Parvati), Ujjain (Shiva) and Dwarka (Krishna).
