One of the Meerkats at Jimmy's Farm and Wildlife Park on sentry duty!

Meerkats are diminutive mammals that inhabit the African desert. Contrary to popular belief, they do not belong to the feline family but are actually part of the mongoose family. Interestingly, the dark rings around their eyes act like sunglasses to reflect the sunlight away from their eyes and avoid them getting damaged.

These social creatures reside in sizable family groups referred to as mobs, which can range in size from 20 to 50 individuals. Working cooperatively, they ensure the safety and survival of all members within the family.

The dominant female within the group assigns specific roles to family members, such as sentry duty to keep a vigilant eye for potential dangers, digging tasks, hunting responsibilities, and even babysitting duties.

Females can give birth to as many as five offspring after an approximately eleven-week pregnancy. The entire family contributes to the nurturing and education of the young. Meerkats may be small in size, but they possess a fierce nature and fearlessly confront scorpions, which constitute a significant part of their diet.

Alexander, a HAZMAT pro who works at our recycling center, has the dangerous and behind the scenes duty of ensuring our county's environment stays free of the many toxic substances that we used to mindlessly dump down our drains and sewers. Mother Nature and the rest of us are lucky to have him and the rest of the HAZMAT crew standing the watch.

A gritty group of Rio Grande Tunnel Motors waits for a call to duty at Helper, Utah, on the afternoon of February 7, 2000. With Union Pacific now the owner of the “Main Line Thru the Rockies,” the next several years will decimate the tired fleet of Grande gold and black locomotives.

Iowa Northern Railway train BUWA has IANR 4100, 3809, 3802, and 3803 for power on this December Sunday to make the run from Butler Yard near Shell Rock, Iowa to Bryant Yard in Waterloo. The train had 75 cars out of Butler, but have brought the head 15 into the CN Waterloo Yard for interchange. In the background EJE 667, still in orange, is paused in between it's duties as the yard switch engine, and a few other motors are laying around at the engine facility including EJE 658 in CN paint.

The CN is in the process of purchasing the IANR but is still awaiting STB approval, and so this is perhaps a bit of a look into the future. Meanwhile the past is well represented in this view too, as the Illinois Central Roundhouse here in the background has been present in at least in some form, (it's had stalls added and removed over the years) back to as far as 1901 (and possibly longer, it was hard to pin down a good date for the roundhouse construction from just some quick online research).

The Iowa Northern Railway uses the CN Mainline in Waterloo and Cedar Falls for a few miles from Waterloo West to Cedar Falls Junction as part of an arrangement going back to the 1980s and a highway project that saw the consolidation of some lines in Waterloo to make room for US 218. Normally from what I've seen the interchange work is typically done by the IANR in either direction at some siding tracks just west of Waterloo West and so they don't come into the yard like this. But occasionally when traffic warrants the CN will have the IANR come directly into the "A Yard" here at the Waterloo Terminal to make their setout and pickup as seen here. They would tie onto a cut of cars and shove back out of the yard to the rest of their train waiting on the mainline.

I had gone out after this BUWA even though it was likely to be a cloudy day because IANR 4100 on the point is one of the road's newest units (arrived to the IANR in August 2023 per some online notes, though it's originally a C&O unit) and still looks pretty sharp. But it was a nice bonus to get them making this less-common move, and this angle normally would be a heavily backlit-view if the sun were present.

would you taken on Timmy at the door?

A bit of a story with this. The kestrel was taking it easy, perched on the branch after a session of hunting. The forest was quiet and it'd started drizzling. Then, very attentively she began checking the sky before the take-off you see here. After about 20 secs there was a huge commotion about 800 metres away as a flock of cockies panicked. With good reason, as I spotted a goshawk amongst them and then saw the kestrel repeatedly swoop the hawk, easily outfly it and quickly drive it off.

We know these birds have great eye-sight and acute senses but I still find it remarkable that it knew the hawk was around when it was such a distance away and before the cockie racket that alerted me.

Taken in Jan 2011 on my road trip from California to Washington. It was a great trip with pleasant weather, fog, rain, and sunshine(not hot hot).

We are having hot days here, I needed something cool to look at. So I dived into my archive & got this.

Beautiful on black too.

The secret is out, and the Canadian internet groups imploded after the release of five SD70ACU's painted to honor the Canadian and United States Armed Forces. Thanks to the team at CP for making this possible, as well as putting on a great ceremony at the Calgary headquarters on Remembrance Day 2019. The 5 meter barrier around the units was a nice touch, as every fan managed to get lots of sunny shots without having to use a people filter.

It's going to be interesting to shoot these units on the road, with the variations in dark and light paint each one will present challenges to the photographer, but its bette rthen dirty red!

On this Veteran's Day, I respectfully ask you not to define patriotism. Not for me, not for anyone.

For those of you who have served -- Thank You. But please, do not think you are more patriotic than those of us who haven't. Do not trample on my right to be patriotic in my own way.

I am not proud of America this week. I am not proud to have Donald Trump elected to be my President. But, I will always defend the right of the people who did elect him.

This red fox seems quite happy to approach me on its hunting duties.

As soon as I saw this I knew exactly how I would edit this.

So I attack it with my camera and then when I was done I sat down to start trying out the bubbles and I noticed there was ACTUALLY a lifeguard on duty and he was watching me the whole time.

There is rarely ever a lifeguard on duty. But I guess I should have realized it since the boat was out. I'm sure he didn't care anyways. I just hate when I realize later that someone was watching me and I didn't notice.

Sunbathing on North California coast.

I usually don’t go out on cloudy days but out of frustration I did. We’re scheduled for another WEEK of rain and clouds.

I decided to visit an eagles nest about 35 minutes from me. When I arrived I was happy to see at least one eagle sitting low in the nest. A moment later it flew out and down low around the nest. I can only assume it was trying to grab a quick bite. It failed and returned to the nest. About 5 minutes later the second eagle returned. They switched positions and the original eagle took off for a break. It’s safe to assume they have at least one egg at this point,

I was surprised the pictures came out decent (I feel) considering I was approx. 75yards away. The reach on the lens with the 1.4x extender is approx. 1792mm. It was completely overcast. I feel that what little light there was must have been reflecting off the lake ( nest is right off it) helping to keep the iso at a manageable level.
