Here in Canada winter tends to "borrow" from both autumn and spring and never pays back. Spring in particular is a brief interlude between late winter and a quick transition to summer. But sometimes things are the sweeter for their brevity. This is a photo favorite from this autumn that I never had a chance to share as of yet. The combination of fall colors and infinite reflection makes me remember autumn fondly.

Here's a "tasty" image for you today of some Red Vines. No, not the candy, I'm afraid. These vines love to grow along chainlink fences, but create the most delightful subjects come autumn. It's not just the brilliant red color (though that helps), but also the great contrast of the dark fence that creates a great amount of contrast. Though the focus system of the 5D Mark IV doesn't seem radically different on paper, it is actually vastly improved in every area, and it's a treat to finally have DPAF on a full frame body. Canada is a BIG country. This is a stretch of highway that is a part of a route that connects the country from East to West and covers an incredible 8000+ kilometers (nearly 5000 miles). It is one of the longest highway systems in the world. I was driving on this stretch near Ottawa and thought the great sky with the last light/colors of the day was worth a stop and capture. I'm glad I did! This image was featured in Flickr's Explore on June 16th at position 72. Thanks!

I'm progressing pretty deep towards my final conclusion on the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero D lens, but I can freely confess that I've been having a great time with it. The lack of barrel distortion makes it a great option for my many forays into the forest. You can see my first look video on the lens here: bit.ly/2gnx4Td. I don't enjoy the shorter periods of daylight this time of year, but the directional light (this shot was taken around 1:45 PM!) makes for very unique images. Watch for my final review in the next week.

Today's image is in celebration of the very cool little Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens for the EOS M system. It has a few shortcomings that I detail in my reviews, but it also is a highly portable, highly functional macro lens that also doubles as a great walkaround option. I'm extremely pleased with the image quality from the lens and got a lot of images that I've been happy to share. It's amazing the beautiful order that nature can create sometimes. This shot of water droplets upon leaves and their stems looks like a beautiful piece of jewelry with a bright heartstone in the middle. I think of pearls in the droplets and a grand ruby in the middle. The color of nature is magical. Photography is such a gift. Being able to capture and enhance random bits of beauty like this gives me joy again and again. I hope you enjoy this lovely, natural necklace, too.

I've just returned from an extended trip to the American Southwest, and specifically the state of Arizona. It provides such a different shooting environment than here in Canada, and I love the wide open spaces and "big vistas". This is Picacho Peak, between Phoenix and Tucson, and the patchy light was painting the side of the mountain peak. The colors were somewhat muted, and so I've warmed the image to build on that painterly look. My first look at this new EF-M 18-150mm lens is now live here: bit.ly/2hYBXP2. One of the unique things about winter is that you frequently go to bed with the world looking one way and awaken to it looking completely different. All it takes is the right kind of snowfall to create a pure, white frosting on everything. We had the wonderfully unique combination of both fresh snow and a mild temperature yesterday. If only winter were always like this... This is my first share from the brand new Canon EF-M 18-150mm IS STM kit lens that has started to ship with the new Canon EOS M5. This is the weekend that we celebrate Thanksgiving in Canada. It is often the peak period of autumn foliage, and our world is alive with rich colors right now. I combined the blues and whites of Lake Ontario at dawn along with the ripening colors of the hardwoods along the shoreline. This is a 116 second exposure courtesy of the WonderPana system from Fotodiox.

Few people move to Canada for Canadian winters (perhaps they visit to ski!), but summers and fall here in Canada are pretty fantastic. I love those long evenings when the sun meanders over the horizon instead of racing (as it does in winter). I captured the last bit of the day here by crouching low so that the rocks and tree on the left side would create a natural frame from this scene. The lovely color is just a fabulous bonus! This is one of the images I feature in my second episode of the "What Caught My Eye" series that shares photos, tips and techniques, and some gear talk. This is a crop from a larger image and one I liked for the cinematic quality of the flare pattern and the light. I love the way that cacti spines catch the morning light and glow with it. Beautiful. I was in the mood to step through the looking glass this morning, and this image of one of the great cycling trails in Mont Tremblant, Quebec really lended itself to some "artistic license". Beaches tend to breed their own kind of culture. Fishing, flip-flops, and a relaxed vibe. Part of why I enjoy visiting places like Myrtle Beach is because of how different they are from where I live. This shot is less about the dramatic sky of some of my beach shots and more about the "vibe" of this pier in Surfside Beach. I liked the color scheme, and the open stretch of beach seems to say, "open for business!" Another day at the beach! This image was featured in Flickr's Explore on June 18th at position 55.

This has been a very different kind of winter for us so far. Today the temperature is more like Arizona where I grew up than the Canada I'm accustomed to now. But I thought I would share a winter treat to celebrate Christmas. This was one of the most beautiful winter mornings I've ever witnessed. Frost had covered the trees, and the wind had created texture ripples in the snow. The dawn brought soft winter pastels to the world. I used a 10 stop ND filter for this long exposure image. Merry Christmas to all, whether it is a white Christmas or not!

One would think that living in Canada we would see frost all the time, but (at least in my area), we don't. It's because we rarely hover around the midpoint between slightly above and then slightly below freezing where frost most often occurs. We tend to get cold and then stay there. But this year is different, and I'm enjoying experience a few different environmental conditions. I've shot this abandoned farmhouse a number of times. I love its state of decay, and the heavy frost yesterday morning made for a unique image. Jack Frost came a nipping last night...

A week ago we had a series of snowstorms that buried our region in a lot of fresh snow. It was some serious work to get out in it to shoot, but this is one of the photos that I liked. It was like a scene straight out of Narnia. I love the nice straight lines presented by the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero D lens. It is definitely very interesting! I’ve got my text review finished and released (bit.ly/2h28TKx) and the video review is now live (bit.ly/2h2eCQk) P.S. In the interest of full disclosure, I added the walker with her dog for vidual interest from another photo I took a day or so later. The snow was very deep when I went out and I saw no one else in the deep woods.

This little gator was posed just like a statue, and, by getting at the right angle, I was able to get an awesome mirror reflection from the water below the rock. I've been asked by a number of people to share more of my Arizona photos, so I've got a new article and photo gallery called "Picturing Arizona". It highlights the unique beauty of the Southwest along with a few tips for making the most of shooting there. You can read it here: bit.ly/picAZDLA In that article I talk a bit about the saguaro - the king of cactus! These desert giants can grow to 70+ feet (22 meters) and live for an extremely long period of time. They are, in my mind, one of nature's most perfect silhouettes. Clean lines, instantly recognizable - they are like a famous landmark in a city. They only grow in the Sonoran Desert, and it would be a poorer place without them! Here's another long exposure shot for you. I setup this shot as close to the water as I could get (definitely getting hit by some spray here!) and used a combination of a ND1000 filter (ten stops) to achieve a long exposure in the middle of the day and also an ND.6 Graduated filter to balance the sky. The bright, autumnal result is one I'm really happy with. Lost in the flow of this beauty! The new 5D Mark IV is an amazing stills camera. In this 21 second exposure the slight movement of the fisherman has given him a ghostly quality. Not quite fully there. I love the composition of this image, and approached it a few different ways, combining exposures and experimenting with different looks. I finally settled on a single exposure and jacked up the warmth of the image and gave it this rich color palette in my favorite plug-in, Alien Skin's Exposure X. I'm proud of the final version here, and hope you enjoy it.

Cactus are very interesting. If you are coming from a soft, green place a world full of spiny, unwelcoming plants is alien and unappealing. When you spend time in the desert it's beauty grows on you, though. I find it very interesting to see a dying cacti, as often they internally look more like bones than the wood of trees. This is a dying section of cholla (pronounced choy-yah) and the internal framework is exposed. It looks like the dessicated bones of some animal. Everything looks better with the rising sun framed around it, so I put the sun in the "cholla bones" and got a wonderfully artful result even from the 18-150mm kit lens, which is actually surprisingly sharp in a lot of its range. The stillness of dawn and a mist obscuring the far shore. I love the look here as it gives the water a feeling of infinity as the sun sluggishly pentrates the haze. The trees are now bared, for the most part, but their fingers reach into the air, grasping the stillness. It the music of morning, a misty rhapsody.

Believe it or not, the image out of camera is rather boring on this one. The "bones" are good, due to a wide focal length (14mm), a long exposure (30 seconds) due to using an ND1000 filter, and the interesting shapes in the foreground. But the sky was flat, as were the colors. I pumped up the image using Luminar AI's sky replacement and reflection tool, which allowed me to upgrade the sky and give the image the spark it deserved. How I did it is part of my demonstration at the link below.

Autumn rains can sometimes be the harbinger of the cold weather to come. The air temperature drops, the wind blows cold gusts, and the leaves are driven from the trees. But the cooler air temperatures mean the raindrops tend to linger on the deep veined fallen leaves. Perfect for getting close and capturing the magic. We may not want the season to end, but we'll appreciate the beauty it brings every step of the way. I've added a touch of exposure in the middle, but this is otherwise straight from camera. I went outside a few days ago on a damp morning, and moved my seat cushion to shake the dew off of it. Underneath, on the wicker of the chair, I found a tiny little green tree frog. He kindly stayed still enough for me to go and get a macro lens to get some photos. I chose the Irix 150mm F2.8 1:1 Macro, though I used an adapter to put it on my Sony a7RIII so that I could get some handheld shots (with Sony's IBIS for assistance). I got some great handheld macros of the little follow, and here's one of my favorites. I reach for the Irix 150M when I want a little more working distance...and it does have lovely bokeh! I often turn to my friends over at JenGar Goldens (Golden Retriever dog breeders) when I'm testing telephoto lenses or sports cameras, as the running dogs provide both a great challenge for the focusing systems and a chance to get some really dynamic images. In this case I was comparing the new Tamron 150-500mm F5-6.7 VXD lens (image gallery here: bit.ly/A057Pics) with the existing Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 OSS (which I used for this shot). Both lenses produced a lot of amazing photos, but I really enjoyed the dynamics of this photo with the great focus on the intense expression on the dog's face as she chases for ball and also the frozen water splashing and surging all around here. If you want more info on the Sony 200-600G or the Sony Alpha 1 that I used for this shot, check out my coverage here:

The Tamron 85 VC sets the bar a little bit higher for bokeh from the SP Prime series. I can't really see anything to criticize from the bokeh, which stays nice even when stopped down (you can see versions of this image at f/2, f/2.8, and f/4 in the image gallery here: bit.ly/1WvcddF. It has a lot of the qualities that I love about vintage lenses in the rendering, but with all the sharpness of a modern lens. That makes it pretty special. You can see my first look video where I break down the size, build, and handling of the lens here: bit.ly/1UrJhmC This photo was #34 on Flickr's Explore list - my first Explore in over three years after having over 70 my first two years on Flickr. Having an incredible amount of reach allows you to do some unique things with a lens. Being able to focus closely helps even more. Tamron improved the minimum focus distance on the new 150-600mm G2 by nearly two feet, allowing to focus closer and get more magnification. This cougar was coming up near the wire mesh of its cage and looking out (I was the only one around). I moved to the side so that I could capture the detail around his beautiful eyes. When looking at the image large, however, I could see reflected in them both the bars of his prison and the freedom beyond. I thought that sharing the crop would be more effective so that you can see what I saw. There was freedom in his eyes. You can see more images that I've taken with the lens here: bit.ly/2dU7diG

Winter seems to be swallowing this old ramshackle farmhouse that is one of my favorite local shooting spots. Yet the "spirit" of the old house is still welcoming; the front door stands open. "Come on in and make yourself at home. " There was just enough nuance in the sky to be slightly menacing, and I liked the end product of the mood of this image. About 13 months ago I reviewed the very expensive but also incredibly exceptional Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II, and have wanted it ever since. I finally sold a few things towards the end of 2016 and placed my order. This is my first share from own copy of the lens. While the wilderness paradise of Mont Tremblant, Quebec gets frequent rain, the upside is that it also gets some AMAZING light as the systems pass through. I was fortunate enough to catch this light over Lac Tremblant at the end of a passing thunderstorm. I love the golden light, the lingering misty clouds, and the fading layers of hills beyond that hint at the mysteries of the wilderness that await. I primarily used the new Tamron 28-200mm F2.8-5.6 RXD on this trip, and it might be the best travel option on the market right now. It's shockingly good for an all-in-one lens. You can find my thorough coverage of the lens here...and I'll soon be following up with a dedicated video and photo gallery from this trip to highlight the kinds of images you can get from the A071.

Here's another gorgeous image I managed to catch while traveling in Mont Tremblant, Quebec. A passing storm left a beautiful sunset in its wake. I love the layers of mist and the depth of the landscape...and the sky is fabulous! You can watch my travel video that highlights both this beautiful location and how well the Tamron works as a travel lens: bit.ly/A071travel. Check out more A071 coverage:

We are beginning to enter the "season of magic" for me - autumn. I love the hikes through the forest and watching the world transform into a fantasyland. I've helped this shot along through some fantasy processing, as autumn is still just starting to arrive here, but I did love the gorgeous result. My review of this lens - the Zeiss Milvus 18mm f/2.8 - will arrive on Monday. Until then, here is a gallery of other images from it: bit.ly/2csoGhc

Technical Information: Canon EOS 6D + Zeiss Milvus Distagon 18mm f/2.8, Processed in Adobe Lightroom CC, Photoshop CC, and Alien Skin Exposure X (use code "dustinabbott" to get 10% off)

Part of what is so intriguing about photography is the unique way that different exposures can fundamentally change scenes. This, for example, was the purposeful underexposure of a scene for a series of bracketed shots. But the heightened drama by imperfections in the lighting (dark, moody shadows, heavy vignette) made the image particularly stunning to me.

Every couple has their "thing". Every wedding photographer has their own "go-to" shots, and other unique opportunities will present themselves throughout the day, but I also like to get a sense of what is unique and special to the couple. For Jessica and Airell, it was a Jeeps. We staged this shot where they pulled the two Jeeps parallel to each other so that they could lean out their windows for the kiss. The flare here is an overlay that I developed for use in shots, as the sun was still almost vertical at this point. This was their particular signature shot, so it's the one I chose to share. This image was featured in Flickrs Explore on August 28th at position 51

This is an image I took last year after a gentle rain and just the right temperature produced beautiful beading of water droplets that look almost like a frost on the edges of this beautiful red rose. The rose blossom looks massive in this image, but that's only because I used a macro lens to get close and allow the background of the image to melt away. I've stylized the color with some post work.

Alien Skin Software's Exposure software continues to be my "go-to" plugin for color processing. Alien Skin Exposure X4 (Use Code "dustinabbott" to get 10% anything and everything)

One of my rose bushes has been persistent in blooming despite the early winter. It's really quite beautiful, and reminds me of Beauty and the Beast. I'll being rolling out extensive coverage of the Samyang AF 35mm F1.4 over the next few weeks, but here's another share to whet your appetite. This lens is quite optically sound for the price point if you are a Sony shooter. More images here: bit.ly/samAF1435ig | First Look Video:

I love autumn, but it slides by so quickly. The leaves turned early this year, and already I'm seeing a lot of bare branches. The explosion of color is so rich, so vibrant, but is so quickly gone. I used my new favorite camera - the Canon EOS R5 - for this shot along with the Samyang AF 14mm F2.8. I'm also reviewing some new rear filters for the lens, so I was able to add a 10 stop ND filter to slow everything done and allow the "water under the bridge" to become smooth. Check out my review coverage of the new Canon EOS R5 to discover why I'm enjoying it so much:

Yesterday was my day off, and I had a fabulous day. I took a little day-trip to Eganville, Ontario, and the unique geologic formations on the Bonnechere River. Part of that is a series of steps that a river runs through, creating all kinds of little waterfalls. I used the wide perspective of a 15mm focal length along with a 10 stop ND filter to allow for a long exposure even in the middle of the day. The new 5D Mark IV was a great companion for this kind of work, and the improved dynamic range that I demonstrate in this video (bit.ly/2dB2W6f) made it much easier to deal with the hotspots that are common in this kind of shot. The images processed beautifully! When you have 25 seconds in this type of scene, everything is in motion.

Here's another image from the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 G2 lens. It's definitely a huge step up in terms of build and functionality. You can see my hands on first look video here: bit.ly/2470G2fl and I've got a lot of images in the image galleries here: bit.ly/2470G2ig. I was exploring early in the morning on a foggy day in the woods behind my home, and found this great web with water droplets from the early morning mist clinging to it. Always a great subject, particularly with a nice, soft bokeh background beyond. Note that the highlights are nice and round even with the lens stopped down to f/4.

First of all, I'm celebrating passing the 100K subscriber mark on YouTube: bit.ly/DLAyt. It's a benchmark I've been looking forward to for several years now. We had a snow day, so my daughter and I took advantage by shooting some portraits in the fresh snow. This is my first portrait session testing medium format, in this case the bulky but optically incredible Fujifilm GFX100. I'm testing the new GF 80mm F1.7 WR as well, and, as you can, the combination makes for some really beautiful portraits. There is little editing here (little was needed), and you can see how nicely the camera has handled all the different ranges of luminosity in the image. My review of everything is coming soon, but you can check out more photos here if you're interested:

I wanted to catch the dynamic nature of the great clouds on this morning along with the drama of the moment. I spent a little time in a Alien Skin Exposure and settled on a version of the FSA Red Bleach look. The color palette skews a little unnatural, but I liked the result anyway. Great skies are always fantastic, but when you can get them mirrored in a body of water....even better! A bleached explosion to make my morning!

It's been a long time since I've had a chance to post as I've had the busiest season of my life...by far...over the past 18 months. But this morning the light was utterly magical, and even though the progess of late autumn has bared many of the leaves and foliage, the gorgeous morning light illuminated the bright red/orange pine needles on the side of this little hill and the little patches of dried grasses in the foreground. I'm testing a new Fujinon medium format lens (GF 20-35mm F4 WR) and the ultra-high resolution medium format system delivered gorgeous detail and nuance to the colors. Dawn comes late this time of year, but it was worth waiting on!

I'll start out 2021 with a release of a beautiful wintry image that I took in early December 2020 after a snow storm. It takes unique conditions for the snow to stick to everything like this (we get a LOT of different snow types around here, so you learn the difference). I cooled the image to give it that winter chill, but I do love the contrast of the tree trunks in the middle of the image that gives the image some tonal variation. I used the new Fujinon XF 50mm F1.0 WR lens here; a rare autofocusing F1.0 lens that I was reviewing. If you're interested in the lens, you can check out my review coverage here:

My final verdict on the new Canon EOS SL2/200D "mini-DSLR" camera is in. Check it out here: bit.ly/SL200D | More Photos here: bit.ly/SL2Images. I used a Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 VC for this image of some backlit ferns turning autumn shades. Water droplets from the mist and morning dew were on everything, creating a beautiful variety of bokeh highlights. I loved the unique beautiful randomness of the image, so chose it as a lead image to highlight the review.

Canada is a big country, and Ontario is a big province. For those of us who regularly travel in this big place you out of necessity learn some of the shortcuts that shave a few minutes off your journey. One such place for me is through the tiny village of Flinton. The road curves often, and there are a couple of times when you come upon a one way bridge (hopefully without anyone coming the other way!), but the shortcut connects two highways and shaves 5-10 minutes off the trip. Oh, and there are some beautiful spots along the road. That was the main attraction for me on this particular trip, and it didn't dissapoint. Here's a shot from one of those creeks that the little bridge goes across. Beautiful light, beautiful autumn colors. A perfect little place of peace.

I snowshoed out to this spot where a wetland has been created by beavers. Though the snow is thick and heavy, the beavers have kept an area of water open by their constant activity. They have a large dam that has helped create this wetland, and just to the left of this frame is a large lodge that they built in such a way that they can access it from underneath (still in the water) to avoid predators. Their ability to transform an ecosystem is really pretty amazing. You can see what I added and what I dropped from my kit in 2016 (and why) here: bit.ly/DADrop

One of my least favorite things about the EOS M3 is the way it was somewhat broken when exposure bracketing. The frame rate would slow to a crawl, which made handheld bracketed shots like this one a pain. Fortunately the M5 has solved that issue, and now offers a very fast 7 FPS burst rate - even when exposure bracketing, which means I could quickly fire off the three exposures that I blended for this final result. One of my favorite things to do when in Scottsdale is to hit the various trails through the McDowell Mountains early in the morning. Getting shots like this makes getting out of bed well worth it! My first look at this new EF-M 18-150mm lens is now live here: bit.ly/2hYBXP2. You can also see my detailed overview of the new Canon EOS M5 here: bit.ly/EOSM5DLA
