Durga puja, the festival of Bengal is one of the most important festivals of Bangalis.

Bengal specializes in preserving the age old tradition of making clay idols. Such unmatched skills come in the limelight during the festive occasion of Durga Puja. Months before the Puja clay artisans start to breathe in life in the images of Durga. Bamboo sticks cut in various shapes and sizes are required to make the basic structure of the idols of Goddess Durga and the platform on which the colossal statue stands. Durga's figure is then imparted shape with straw tied with jute strings. Creating fascinating figurines of Hindu Gods and Goddesses has been an age old tradition for the Pals (the clay artisans).

The idol-making process begins with crafting a sturdy bamboo and straw frame called the kathamo that can support the weight of clay. clay is then put layer by layer.Straw binds the structure together and forms the foundation for base layers.

One of the most significant religious festivals in the Hindu religion, Durga Puja, attracts devoted worshipers of the goddess every year. Durga Puja 2023 Date is from 14 October 2023 to October 24, 2023, Durga Puja will be celebrated with great excitement. In states like Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Bihar, Tripura, and Jharkhand, Durga Puja is joyfully observed. In Bengal, the five-day holiday is celebrated as Vijayadashami, Maha Navami, Maha Ashtami, and Shashthi.

The Durga Puja festival honors Goddess Durga’s victory over the demonic Mahishasura. On the tenth day, also known as Vijayadashami, it is said that Goddess Durga defeated him after a nine-day battle. The culmination of Durga Puja is marked by the celebration of Dussehra on this day.

Here it can be seen an unknown artist putting his finishing touches to the Durga Mother . Incidentally this Durga will travel far east into some Hindu family by trailer truck very soon..

The worship of Ma Durga, or Goddess Durga, is deeply ingrained in Hindu culture and mythology. There are several reasons why Indians worship Ma Durga:

Symbolism: Ma Durga is considered the embodiment of Shakti, the divine feminine energy, and represents the power of the Supreme Being that preserves moral order and righteousness in the cosmos. Her multiple arms hold weapons symbolizing various qualities needed to combat evil and protect the righteous.

Victory of Good over Evil: Durga Puja, the festival dedicated to Ma Durga, celebrates the victory of good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, Ma Durga defeated the demon Mahishasura, who symbolizes ignorance and ego, thereby restoring peace and prosperity.

Motherly Love and Protection: Ma Durga is often depicted as a loving and caring mother who protects her devotees from harm and evil forces. Worshipping her is believed to invoke her motherly blessings and protection.

Fulfillment of Wishes: Devotees pray to Ma Durga to fulfill their wishes, seek strength, and overcome obstacles in their lives.

Cultural Significance: Durga Puja is one of the most important festivals in India, particularly in the eastern states like West Bengal, where it is celebrated with grandeur and fervor. It not only holds religious significance but also cultural and social importance, bringing communities together in celebration

Kalighat Patuapara is a traditionally potters’ quarter in southern Kolkata

Most workshops in the area are small and chock-a-block, forcing artisans to push their idols out in the open. Around 900 idols are made at the Kalighat patuapara every year.

Beautiful Bengal, India.

Only few days left in Durga Puja festival. Work is in progress in full fledged at Kumortuli - the artists den.

These are freshly painted idols of Goddess Durga, where the color splashes from the brushes has fallen in the trampoline behind the idols and resulted in a glowing kind of effect around the idols.

Pardon me guys for that transparent watermark in the centre, but picture poachers are on the rampage this season.

This is a picture of Durga puja festival, famous in Bengal and all over eastern India. I took this picture on the last day of the festival. That day was called Dashami. Many bengali people participated in this day with many cultural programs. Dhunuchi dance is one of them. I captured this in the street of Kolkata.

At the time of visarjan of durga idol in the durga puja festival, the all lady clading red saree playing with sindur to celebrate the ending moment of dosomi with dhunuchi dance, a great capture of culture tradition and color.

An sculpture artist was sitting in front of his own hand made mother goddess durga sculpture. In that evening he was smoking and the dense smoke from his mouth makes a candid scene just like the lion in behind was breathing and roaring.

The mother goddess durga and the cruel mahisasura whose are fighting each other that is the eternal truth, after visarjan of sculpture the face was found beside water makes the impression so much realistic.

One of the prominent customs and most awaited activity during Durga Puja is the dhunuchi naach. On visarjan (bijaya dashami), this devotional dance is performed holding dhunuchi (an earthen pot filled with burning coconut husk and camphor) in front of Goddess Durga. While a few sarvajanik mandals organise dhunuchi competitions for youngsters on popular demand, there are few others who organise the naach simply to keep the beautiful tradition alive.

Low lights, narrow space and to top it all I had 18-200mm DX lens and a D90 body. I think it was a perfect combo of challenges. I tried my best and could manage this.

However, within next 2days of shooting, I was infected with COVID-19. Now after almost 3weeks, I have recovered and posting this image

it was already dark and I was on my way out from Kumartuli, the famous lacality where clay artists put life to their sculptures of Goddess. i have spotted this artist engrossed in drawing facelines of small idols. it took sometime to make him comfortable with my presence; and then cane the moment when I took a series of pictures. Low light, human elements and absence of any support made it quite difficult to take a steady and presentable image. this was the best amongst the series.

This year Durga Puja is starting from 11th October. With every passing days, activities in Kumortuli is picking up speed to complete the idols. Once completed, they will be shifted to community pandals or other places of worship for the five days long festivity called Durga Puja.

This festival is mostly celebrated by Bengali and other East Indian Hindu communities spread all across India and also in other countries.

Shot of Making of Goddess Durga idol in one of the street of Kumartuli,Kolkata.

The settlement of Kumartuli, meaning "potter locality" (Kumar = potter. Tuli = locality), is over 300 years old. It was formed by a bunch of potters who came to the area in search of a better livelihood.

Nowadays, around 150 families live there, earning a living by sculpting idols for the various festivals.

In the lead up to Durga Puja, thousands of artisans (many who are hired from other areas) toil diligently in approximately 550 workshops to complete the idols of Durga in time for the festival. What's pleasing to note is that the idols are made out of environmentally friendly materials such as bamboo and clay.
