Built for durability versus beauty, the old fog alert station beneath the Golden Gate Bridge has stood stoically guarding the entrance to the San Francisco Bay since the 19th century. Still, there is a certain Sheng Fui about it me thinks--as the old stone building has gradually become one with its surrounding environment.

This ball lasted over 13 years and survived many catches, throws and the occasional chews. Had to place it in the snow in memory of my best friend, who loved trying to find it in the winter, especially.
Taken for the "Cotton" theme for Macro Mondays. This was a Christmas gift for Cosmo. He's pretty much destroyed this "durable" toy.
The qualities that I think get underestimated quite often are durability and tenacity and a willingness to just keep at it. Time spent behind the camera is just phenomenally important.

Bristlecone pines (Pinus aristata), the most durable living entities on this planet, are known to have achieved lifespans of several thousand years. A native of the American Rocky Mountains, these conifers are found at elevations which exceed 8,000 feet and are often found right at the timberline,11,500 feet. Colorado contains the most easterly found environments for bristlecone pines in the United States.
This is taken on Mount Evans Scenic and Historic Byway, the highest paved road in North America, a grove of remarkable trees whose gnarled trunks and knotty branches have stood here since the Roman Empire ended some 1,500 years ago. These trees are known for their ability to survive in very harsh conditions for a very long time; the oldest known specimen, which is located near Craig, is believed to be at least 2,461 years old.

For a magazine I made this photo. It stands for durability and being economical. It was great fun to make this. I had to "snitch" some coins out of the piggy bank of my daughter though hahaha! Hope you like it.
Huon pine is an extremely durable wood. That is why it was prized in the 19th century for ship building. It was (and still is) very plentiful on the south west coast of Tasmania. In fact a number of early 19th century sailing ships were constructed in Macquarie Harbour on the west coast. Today, it is better known as a preferred timber for expensive furniture.
This red marker buoy was made in the mid 19th century and spent many years in service in the Tamar Channel. Considering its exposure to all weather conditions, it remains in good knick.

The Upgraded B6 Switcher: A Durable “Yard Goat”
Built: 1916 by Pennsylvania Railroad, Juniata Shops, Altoona, Pennsylvania
Retired: 1957
The addition of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s signature Belpaire firebox, superheaters and power reverse lever made this B6sb switcher one of the most modern, powerful, and efficient 0-6-0’s anywhere. The B6 class as a whole was the most successful of what the Pennsylvania Railroad called their “shifters.” Like most switching engines, No. 1670 led a career of little excitement, but great importance.
Scuttling back and forth, this little “yard goat” spent most of its life breaking down and making up new trains. Its sloped-back tender gave good visibility to the rear – an important feature on a locomotive that would spend half of its life in reverse.
The No. 1670 is one of two surviving Pennsylvania Railroad B6 locomotives and the only B6sb.
Short Watchtower ...An emblematic place where there are ... History is not forgotten ...
This village was built for the underground exploitation of Filón de San Dionisio, which in 1907 would become the Corta Atalaya open-air deposit.
In 1873, Rio Tinto Company acquired the Riotinto mines and raised as a problem the transfer of workers from their homes to the workplace and, taking into account only economic premises, planned the construction of houses where the miners had already built shacks to spend the night near the workplace. In this way, the company limited itself to replacing the huts or cabins with more durable buildings, building neighborhoods in the place chosen by the miners. It began with the construction of 100 homes, measuring 45 square meters, reducing housing needs to a minimum.
The company provided this nucleus with a public square, chapel, grocery store, casino, school, and Civil Guard barracks. This neighborhood housed part of Riotinto's working population for almost a century.
In 1970, an ambitious project for the expansion of Corta Atalaya was approved, in which the destruction of this village was contemplated. A year later the project was carried out and, after accommodating the inhabitants in Alto de la Mesa, El Valle or in Nerva, all their homes were demolished.
Today, you can still see the ghostly ruins of the school in this village, to the west of La Corta, which for many years was the largest open-pit mine in the world.4
It was the setting for the filming of the historical film El corazón de la tierra, by Antonio Cuadri, and the science fiction film PROXIMA, by Carlos Atanes.5
In its advance, it was also necessary to destroy the old town of La Mina, rising a new town in its current location called Minas de Riotinto.
The Cyclamen, a symbol of sincere and lasting love
According to one of the many legends surrounding this delicate flower, King Solomon wore a crown of cyclamen buds. But when the Jews were deported to Babylon, the flowers bowed, saying, "When a son of David ascends the throne again and the crown returns to Jerusalem, we will lift up our heads." In ancient times and in the Middle Ages, this tuberous plant was believed to facilitate childbirth, and several superstitions also accused it of causing miscarriages. Since the Renaissance, this graceful flower, modestly leaning forward, has also become a symbol of sincere and enduring love.
Nowadays, it embodies the quintessential love feeling in Japan, just like the rose in the West. Graphic, with purple or white petals that stand out nicely against thick dark leaves, cyclamen has also been a great inspiration to artists. In religious scenes, Flemish painters drew them to represent the enduring love of Christ. Leonardo da Vinci also dotted the margins of his manuscripts with his corollas.
Whilst no archaeological material was found in the durable, mineral and easy-to-clean interior, objects from the Chalcolithique (4,720-4,220 ybp) have been found around the site. The lower menhir may be from anywhere between 6,000 and 4,500 ybp and that whole transitional period from the end of the Neolithic into the first ages of metal looks to be valid for this site.
The cavity is 3.20 x 2.30 x 1.90 m The entrance hole is 70 cm in diameter. The outside rim is around 10 cm wide. The rock is granit and the cavity a clean cul-de-sac, so from my understanding must be considered as man made. There seem to be basins above the site and a 2.18 m high menhir stands 30m below on the same 'path'.
Unlike some of the troglodyte sepultures from a broadly similar period in Sardinia, the interior space is curved like a large bowl and, apart from the concentric entrance rim, has no lines of form or structure.
With the menhir close-by, one must expect the area to have been frequented and the great effort to make this cavity cannot have been for the creation of a secret place to hide people or objects - the outcrop is far too dominant.
Describing the acoustic qualities needs to tip from correlation to causation in that the acoustics were the aim of the site and not a by product. Why here? What is it about this section of landscape? ...

The "Lock Step" ( The Rockefeller Foundation ) outlines a scenario of authoritarian control in the wake of a hypothetical novel influenza pandemic similar to COVID-19.(anno 2010)
We concluderen daarom: Samen zweren is pas fijn!

Researcher and author Niki Friedrich Raapana accidentally stumbled into a pilot programme of the UN's ultimate agenda back in 1999, in Seattle. In her search for answers she found that the consortium of players, stakeholders and prime movers had one thing in common: jargon !
e.g. 'Sustainable Development' is a term we are all familiar with by now and there are many others. Tracing the terminology she was able to find an entire system which had infiltrated our governments and was rewriting state policies and objectives. The European Union was founded upon these principles. Anyone notice what happened to the once nation states that make up the EU? (They're all dead.)
Tracing the terminology to find an entire system which had infiltrated our governments and was rewriting state policies and objectives. Civil and individual rights and freedoms are abolished and the life becomes micromanaged.

Jan Theuninck has been painting the evolution of Western totalitarianism for 20 years - he saw the evolution within the political spectrum where the socialist parties were lost (Fagospatose, 2001) in the Third Way (The third way is no way, 2004) movement of Clinton , Blair and Schröder with which they gave a face to communitarianism of the New World Order. He has often compared the latter to a new kind of National Socialism. His attention has always been fixed thanks to the more than 50 years of misery with blackmail games of the services and torture practices with chemical and energy weapons (Beyond the limit, 2001, Rinascimento, 2009, The culture of learned helplessness, 2011, Neostasi, 2012, Derailed system , 2012, The banality of Evil, 2013, Zersetzung, 2014, ils nous tiennent, 2015, Submission, 2015, Threat, 2016, Utopia, 2016, Conformity, 2017, Brainwashing, 2018, Warnung, 2019, Dein Kampf, 2019, Censorship, 2020, Post-truth society, 2020 and in 2021: Political Pandemic, New World Order, The Great Reset, Angel Vaccine, Aryan Corona Passport, Cytokine Storm, Back from never been away, Sustainable Dictatorship.

Greetings from SugarCity, near Amsterdam. At a former sugar factory two silos have been transformed into an eye catching building complex. It hosts offices and space for party events. Isn't it a great example of creativity and durability?
A quick peep inside a geode --
Geodes are spherical to subspherical rock structures with an internal cavity lined with mineral materials. They have a durable outer wall that is more resistant to weathering than the surrounding bedrock. This allows the geode to survive intact when the surrounding bedrock weathers away. The mineral lining the cavity is often a scintillating druse of tiny quartz crystals underlain by multiple bands of translucent gray and white agate. Many are lined with more spectacular treasures.
Rich purple amethyst, perfect white calcite crystals, and colorful banded agate are other common linings. Rare geodes can be filled with beautiful blue gem silica, pink rhodochrosite, spectacular opal with vivid play-of-color or other rare materials. Geodes range in size from under one centimeter to several meters in length. From the outside most geodes look like common rocks, but when they are opened the sight can be breathtaking.

Amaryllis gave me much satisfaction for both beauty, durability of the flowers and even photographically.
So, I planted two further varieties, either than the red one of last year that will soon blossom again.
This is a big and streaked Amaryllis ('Bella Donna' ?) in a deep bright orange...
In this photo can be seen all the stages of flowers growth, from the still closed buds to the full bloom.
I had to hurry up yesterday and last night to sort out some shots as the left flower is soon going to wither. The stamen here were gradually turning from yellow to a brownish tone.
(Notice also: to the left hand side, the orange colour is turning to reddish with the aging of the flower)
It's been a very fortunate case as for few minutes I could have some sun reflections backlighting the flowers.
I think the natural lighting effect is very cool. Few more tests in the next up-loads.

Small sealed, labeled bag of Libby-vermiculite ore once distributed by WR Grace as a souvenir novelty. The intended concept behind this asbestos-bursting gimmick actually demonstrates a fundamental and unusual property of vermiculite ore and why it is used at all: it "pops" and "expands" when adequately heated.
Basically, vermiculite ore is essentially compressed layers of thin, flaky micaceous sheets with moisture trapped inside. When a requisite amount of heat is applied to the layered mineral material, it rapidly expands or exfoliates many times its original size, generating popping/crackling sounds as it quickly releases moisture vapor and creates small, accordian-like flaky structures.
These little expanded vermiculite kernels have been found to be excellent heat/cold insulators, durable, very light-weight, vermin-proof, fire-resistant, non-combustible, electrically non-conductive, water absorptive, chemically resistant, and many other properties useful to industry.
However, due to certain geological conditions at the vermiculite mine on Zonolite Mountain in Libby, Montana, these particular vermiculite ore bodies intermingled with naturally occurring asbestos and other minerals. Consequently, when Libby-vermiculite is processed, the inherent asbestiform minerals (fibrous amphiboles) are also involved in the processing and within the final "Zonolite" product itself. It has been documented and publicly reported that the highest release of airborne asbestos fibers from Libby-vermiculite occurs during the "popping" or exfoliation process in creating Zonolite.
It should be mentioned that not all vermiculite contains asbestiform minerals, but Libby-vermiculite has been studied and shown to contain a variety of potentially harmful asbestiform amphibole minerals, such as tremolite, richterite, winchite, magnesio-arfvedsonite, ferro-edenite, etc.; a literal amphibole asbestos cocktail.
So, this is a case where asbestos was not a specific ingredient added during product manufacturing, but is generally accepted to be a contaminant or "tramp fiber" within the Libby-vermiculite ore. Despite all of this, regardless of how asbestos got into the Zonolite, unless tested conclusively its presence should conservatively be assumed; bringing us back to the little "popping" novelty souvenir, which now doesn't seem so novel anymore. Perhaps it might also serve as an example of a certain technological naiveté or even blatant disregard of "defective" product health risks.
Continuing the Sixty Sixty Coaches Dennis Dart theme, this 9.8m Carlyle Dartline example was acquired in 2010, also as a support to the three 54-plate Plaxton Pointers for Service X43 (Abergavenny-Crickhowell-Brecon-Merthyr Tydfil-Treharris-Cardiff).

She was nearly 20 years old when she arrived in South Wales, and I believe that she did not last long with the company.
My shot from April 2011 shows her arriving at Brecon Interchange Cardiff bound, missing both an 'X' and a destination blind.

The cutting-edge technology that keeps the Silverstone motor racing track in tip-top condition could be coming to Croydon. John Bownas spoke to the team hoping to bring it here.
Pot holes – we all hate ‘em, and Croydon certainly has its share.
But now, the borough’s highways team is taking a lead from the people responsible for maintaining Silverstone’s grand prix circuit.
New technology that is good enough for the world’s top racing drivers is being tested in Croydon to see if it is up to the council’s exacting standards.
If trials are successful, the infrared-powered Nu-Phalt repair system could become invaluable to Croydon’s road repair crews who would be the first in London to realise its potential benefits.
Apart from a significant possible cost saving, the biggest advantages that the new technique has over traditional methods are:
•speed: a typical 1 square metre repair can be completed in just 20 minutes; currently, the same job takes considerably longer, and would be only a temporary fix;
•durability: the infra-red triggered thermal bonding means that patch repairs are far more permanent and blend seamlessly into the surrounding road surface;
•environmentally friendly: the process starts by recycling the existing macadam and needs only a small amount of new material to top off the repair.
The council has recently announced a multi-million pound investment project to resurface many of its roads.
However, there will always be a need for fast and efficient repairs in those cases where small patches of tarmac work loose.
This can happen at any time of the year – although it is usually after spells of wet or cold weather that these small holes open up to create a real headache for motorists and cyclists.
In total, the council’s emergency repairs operation currently costs about £560k every year in manpower and materials – and that’s not including the money that is budgeted separately for the major road resurfacing schemes that we will be seeing a lot more of over the next few years.
Steve Iles is the council’s head of highways, and he knows better than anyone else in the borough just how big a task it is to stay on top of the thousands of road repairs that his teams have to carry out every year.
Talking to Your Croydon about this mammoth job and his hopes for the promising high-tech solution, he first ran through some of the big numbers involved.
“We’ve got nearly 3,000 roads in Croydon, and these all get inspected by the council at least twice a year.
“We look out for any problems that might have arisen since the last visit – and particularly any new holes or cracks that could pose a hazard.
“Since January our system’s logged nearly 5,000 new reports from both streetscene inspectors and those members of the public who phone or email to tell us about possible problems.”
In that same time we’ve managed to fill in or repair about 9,800 – but there’s still around 8,600 that we know about waiting to be fixed.
“That takes a lot of doing,” continued Steve, “I’ve got six full-time staff who spend the majority of their day out doing this sort of work.
“And when they can’t do road repairs, because of snow and ice, they drive the gritting lorries to try to keep the roads clear.”
Tony Whyatt is the highways engineer whose research into improved technology solutions has led to the trial of the Nu-Phalt system.
“I’m really optimistic about how this will save us time and money.
“We reuse most of the existing road material on-site and need to add only a small amount of fresh material to each repair.
“There’s no noisy compressors, and the system cuts the number of vehicles and staff involved in each repair.
“We also minimise disruption to traffic – which is good for drivers – and these repairs can be driven over again almost immediately they’re finished.”
Indeed, driving away from our meeting with Tony we drove over a number of holes that had just been filled – and the first thing we noticed was that we didn’t notice them at all.
The repaired road was as smooth as the day it was originally laid.

A brick with, for British viewers at least, a familiar name. There is a helpful article, published by the Northern Echo, giving a little history of the brick, made by Stanley Brothers and identifying other users of the "trademark" (a manufacturer of bitumen roofing felt and, from 1929, the London Rubber Company). Warning; the Northern Echo page is hopelessly infected with advertisements, all meaningless.
