Beautiful Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, is filled with history & charm. This was my first glimpse of it across the River Duoro.

Neben den elektrischen Lokomotiven im nez cassé-Design gibt es in Portugal auch noch die dieselbetriebenen Verwandten, welche in Lizenz von Sorefame gebaut worden sind: die Baureihen 1900 und 1930, wobei letztgenannte nicht mehr im Einsatz ist. Seit dem Ausscheiden der CC72000 bei der SNCF ist die Baureihe 1900 somit die letzte im Planbetrieb anzutreffende Diesellokbaureihe auf dem europäischen Kontinent in diesem außergewöhnlichen Design. Eingesetzt wird die Baureihe 1900 von Medway im portugiesischen Güterverkehr und erlebt derzeit einen zweiten Frühling, insgesamt sollen 7 der 8 im Besitz von Medway befindlichen Maschinen im Laufe des Jahres 2023 einsatzbereit sein (Vgl. Trainspotter 148/2022: Dezembro de 2022). Auch vor dem "Cimento" im Douro-Tal sind die Loks mittlerweile wieder häufiger anzutreffen, so auch im März 2022: Das gelbe Einzelstück "Eva", die 1903, bespannte den 50323 von Gaia-Devesas nach Godim. Zu sehen ist der Zug auf einem der beiden Viadukte in Ribaduoro, wo die Bahnstrecke eine große 90°-Kurve vollzieht und dabei kurz hintereinander zwei Viadukte überquert, bevor es herab ins Flusstal geht. Die Lok kündigte sich bereits minutenlang im Vorfeld lautstark an; generell sind die Loks der Baureihe 1900 akustisch ein wahres Spektakel, was glücklicherweise mehrfach auf der Reise erlebt werden konnte.
Ja viel verschoben wurde nicht, denn dem Regio sollte der Güterzug folgen. Da man ihn bei Wind nur schlecht hört (Auch wenn er einen riesigen Lärm macht) waren unsere Hochstativ schon lange ausgefahren. Inzwischen sind auch die Holländer wieder eingetroffen. Ja sie mussten natürlich ihre Badewanne wiederholen. Dann erzählten sie etwas von einer Verspätung vom Güterzug. Obwohl sie die gleichen Tools hatte wie Lars (trainstatus.pt) wussten wir davon nichts. Doch als allen klar war, dass er zu spät kommt, plauderten wir noch etwas über die verschiedenen Programme heute Morgen. Und was man später noch so macht. So dann war auch die gute ¼ h Verspätung abgewartet und der Zug so wie er sich angekündigt hatte. Nur fehlten da die gedeckten Güterwagen, dann nehmen wir halt einen Ganzzug!
Viel verschieben mussten wir nicht. Nur ca. 300m fahren (faul, wie wir sind) und um 70° drehen. Von dieser Stelle habe ich noch wenige Bilder gesehen, die mich so wirklich umhauen. Ist ja auch schwierig, man will ja nicht in einem Privatgarten erwischt werden. Das taten wir auch nicht, zumindest war ich davon überzeugt. Wir warteten und warteten doch der Zug kam einfach nicht. Irgendwann fand Lars heraus, dass der Zug doch gute 20 Minuten zu spät dran ist. So dann warten wir halt. Den Zug können wir sowieso nicht verpassen, die kleine Lok meldet sich mit ihrem Lärm bereits früh genug an. Als es dann tönte waren unsere Blicke wieder auf die Bahn gerichtet und wir stellten fest, dass besonders zu meinem Leidwesen die öde aka «historische Lok» in blau kam. Ja blau im See das läuft. Hier an dieser Brücke werde ich heute leider nicht 100%ig glücklich. Glücklich war ich jedoch, dass wir ohne Diskussionen wieder verduften konnten.
For some reason I never got around to posting more shots from Portugal from last winter. It was by far my most succesful trip this year, so time to change that. On a beautiful sunny day, retro blue CP 1413 leads IR 869 over the Ovil viaduct. This shot was a little harder to get than expected. The viaduct is easily accessed by a pathway to one of the houses, but the crossing was being guarded by a quite angry barking dog. After several attempts to find a way around I decided I wasn't going to miss the shot for such a stupid reason and just walked up there anyways doing my best to be the more intimidating one. The dog was very displeased by my continued presence but thankfully stayed on the other side of the track. The orange trees are an ever present sight along the Duoro and I ate more than a few while waiting in various spots....
Das passt, ja schon mal. Nun also weiter. Nur wohin? Wir probierten es bei Pala auf dem Viadukt. Das sollte im Oktober noch knapp mit Sonne gehen. Jetzt auch? Wir probierten es einfach Mal. Als wir ankamen war der hintere Teil bereits in der Sonne und vorne Schatten, viel Schatten. Als sich das ganze in einer knappen halben Stunde nicht veränderte, war klar. Geht nicht! Also hatten wir einen Telefrosch in Pala zur Auswahl oder ein gescheites Bild in Aregos. Zwar waren wir da schon, aber nur die blaue Lok von ganz oben auf dem Damm. Der einzige Nachteil, es wird eine knappe Sache, zeitlich. Ich war ganz klar für Aregos, Justin auch eher und Lars wollte sicher ein Bild. Ich konnte sie jedoch von Aregos überzeugen. So fuhren wir, schneller als auch schon über die Strasse, welche wir jetzt doch so langsam kennen. So konnten wir noch einige Minuten (Trotz Schleichern) gewinnen und standen bereits wieder ausgeruht an der Stelle, bis die orange Englisch Electric dann auch kam.

Il ponte Dom Luis I è un ponte ad arco in metallo a due piani che attraversa il fiume Douro tra le città di Porto e Vila Nova de Gaia in Portogallo. Al momento della costruzione il suo arco di 172 m era il più lungo del suo genere nel mondo. La costruzione fu iniziata nel 1881 e il ponte inaugurato il 31 ottobre 1886 (il ponte inferiore fu invece aperto nel 1887). La lunghezza totale è 385,25 m con un peso di 3045 tonnellate. L'arco misura 172 m di lunghezza e 44,6 m di altezza.
The Dom Luís I Bridge is a double-decked metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At the time of construction its span of 172 m was the longest of its type in the world. The construction was begun in 1881 and the bridge opened on 31 October 1886 (the upper deck; the lower deck opened in 1887). The total length is 385.25 m with a weight of 3045 tons. The arch measures 172 m in length and 44.6 m in height.

La iglesia de la Santa Cruz, del XVII, fue remodelada en siglos posteriores y tiene portada e interior barrocos.
Tourist photo opportunity, even though these barrels probably don't contain much port! For that you'd have to pay an admission fee in the visitor centre uphill. ;-)
Rabelo boats are the traditional Portuguese cargo boats, once used to ship wine from the upriver vineyards to port producers in Gaia.
