I am taking some Spanish lessons in DuoLingo at the present and above title would be typical exercise on that platform. About 10 years ago I took photos of a tree on the Lake Ontario shore in every season. That tree is now dead, so I may repeat the series with this árbol.

Duolingo "The World's best way to learn a language" Adding some color to the neighborhood as well as new jobs.
Despite weeks of Italian lessons prior to our holiday, I struggle with everyday speech (and newspaper articles). The Duolingo teaching is very good, though I find that I am far better at identifying zoo animals than e.g. dealing with restaurant bookings. On our final night in Milan we rocked up at the appointed time but were unable to persuade the waiter that we had booked; we were led to the least desirable table in the restaurant. Fortunately the food was good.
Today the Hereios of the We’re Here! Group are reading newspapers.
News from the Far Side:
*I still can't see properly. I'll see a neurologist when I can get in. I don't have much hope that things will change. but I'm still standing. mostly.
*I had to get hearing aids, there's a loss in both ears. they should arrive next week. the cost of mine was about the same as a down payment on a million-dollar house would be. but they are pink.
*I'm listening to the wind. we are supposed to get tons of rain, but they've been telling us that for weeks. it's drizzling right now.
*I signed up for French lessons on both Babbel and Duolingo. I'm flunking. but tomorrow is another jour.
*eye cream does not erase under-eye bags. no buts about it.
*I read a lot, two or three books a week. but it's hard when I really can't see.
*my social calendar is full. with dr. appointments. but, maybe it'll get better.

2025 startet with a big milestone in Duolingo for a friend of mine (1000 days streak) and I made this amigurumi version of Duo (the owl guiding through the app) for her as a reward.
Which is a milestone for itself as it is the first thing I did crochet in ages.
So here's to a new year full of new experiences, achievements and surprises.

52 Weeks in 2025 - Week 1 - 3,2,1 Start
Yesterday’s trail of links; I bumped into an article listing 87 facts about Star Trek. I’m a Star Trek fan, so how could I resist! It turns out that this article was published in an app named Wattpad. Never heard of it, so of course I had to install it on my iPhone and check it out.
Anywho, while reading up on the 87 facts, the fact that the Klingon language is a fully developed fictional language popped up and that we can learn this language via the Duolingo app. Naturally I had to check that out too and so discovered Duolingo also offered a course in High Valyrian (language from Game of Thrones). This led me on the trail to read more about fictional languages, which led me to articles about the Voynich manuscript and the Codex Seraphinianus. The latter was a very interesting and curious find! The above is only the essence of yesterday’s trail of links, I relaxed in the sofa and spended a few hours leasurely reading countless of other articles. But what ended up in my journal was what stuck to me the most.
Thanks to HMD Customs again, he also sent me the penguin arms so I could make this, he might be a dead meme, but it's October, and all dead are welcome in this month. I'm going to be honest here, I did like the concept of making him, but now he just look wierd in this form, he looks skinny and tall, perhaps if I used an Angry Birds body this would look less wierd, but I'm not sure which would look best for him and also I don't have any more Angry Birds bodies, I need to get some. I still like the paintjob though, and I still think the arms would work.

Finally, a lot later, but a tiny bit closer to another life goal. 777 days streak of learning French. How and why did that take so long?
Bedsides my late mother’s Urdu language, my late father’s Punjabi, and English learned as a student in Pakistan, I’ve always hungered to learn more languages. As a pre-teen, I was making some progress learning very basic German from Teach Yourself books in the mid 1970s. I won’t mention here BASIC, Pascal, FORTRAN, C, or C++ type programming languages I had also learned!
But then real tough Cambridge school certificate, then Cambridge A’ levels, and later professional electronics engineering degree studies left no time that was taken up being a student political leader in the 1980s. An engineering classmate from Lahore, Amir, did learn French at the Alliance Français and got me hooked on French movies around 1983.
In 1987 (West Germany) became the first country I visited, and fell in love with, followed by France. So, despite my love for Germany and the German people, French became my language learning goal.
Then 30 years of life, and history, flew by. I bought all the books, tapes, CDs, DVDs, and even apps, as the technology of language learning evolved. I even got the DuoLingo app when it first came out. But time remained the constraint.
Until the pandemic. When everyone was asking others what Netflix series to binge-watch, I took advantage of the time to get and spend time walking with my two German Shepherd Dogs, took off 32 pounds of weight I had put in 32 years living in USA, started work on my second music album, and more.
But what I am so happy I was able to pull off into a consistent habit was doing at least 10-minutes or more of French learning every day. Every day, at least once, before midnight.
By the grace of God I just hit 777 days of consecutive learning days, and my 70th week streak in the highest Diamind League of DuoLingo’s gamification system (which really incentivizes the competitive spirit in me).
Can I have a real conversation with my French neighbor, CFO of a major FinTech, Julien? … Pas vraiment, mais peut-être un peu…. But, my life’s journey to be a Learn It All continues. Je vous parlerai (en anglais, français, Urdu/hindi, Punjabi) bientôt!

Я вивчаю українську мову вже близько місяця. Мені знадобилося 2 тижні, щоб вільно вивчати кирилицю. Лексика легша, тому що я її більшу частину розумію (моя рідна мова – словенська, я також вільно володію хорватською – як слов’янською, так і українською). Отже, уроки Duolingo для мене дуже-дуже прості, але я використовую їх, щоб відпрацьовувати свої навички письма українською та вивчати базову граматику (яка дуже схожа на словенську, тому мені легко). Здебільшого я вивчаю нову лексику з виступів та інтерв’ю президента Зеленського. Я розумію практично все, що чую чи читаю, але все одно роблю помилки, коли намагаюся говорити чи писати українською. Тому прошу вибачення за будь-які помилки в цьому тексті :-)
І так, я знаю, моя кирилиця, мабуть, не найкрасивіша і не найчитабельніша, але я можу її писати і можу читати те, що я пишу ;-)
My support for Ukraine
I have been studying Ukrainian for about a month now. It took me 2 weeks to learn Cyrillic fluently. Vocabulary is easier because I understand most of it (my native language is Slovenian, I am also fluent in Croatian - both Slavic languages, as well as Ukrainian). So, Duolingo lessons are very, very easy for me, but I use them to practice my writing skills in Ukrainian and learn basic grammar (which is very similar to Slovenian, so it's easy for me). For the most part, I learn new vocabulary from President Zelensky's speeches and interviews. I understand practically everything I hear or read, but I still make mistakes when I try to speak or write Ukrainian. So, I apologize for any mistakes in this text :-)
And yes, I know, my cyrillic is probably not the prettiest or the most readable, but I can write it and I can read what I write ;-)

Commemorating 50 Years Anniversary Of Reading & Watching "The Godfather" In Pakistan - IMRAN™
When and where did you read Mario Puzo's novel "The Godfather"? If you did not read it, did you watch the movie?
I remember reading the incredible novel as a pre-teen in Karachi, Pakistan. That was also when I first started trying to learn foreign languages German and French (in addition to English of course). But I did not get to become consistent in learning French until I started using DuoLingo daily since the last 3 years.
There is so much French literature and poetry I want to understand and appreciate. I remember learning that besides the novel opening with the epigraph, "Behind every great fortune there is a crime. - Balzac" another of the most quoted lines in movie history, Don Corleone’s unforgettable statement, “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse” is an almost word for word translation of dialog from Balzac's novel, Father Goriot. That was written in 1835, more than 100 years before The Godfather!
In the 1970s, Hollywood movies used to take a much longer tine to reach developing countries' cinemas. That is a far cry from today. I loved seeing Top Gun Maverick in IMAX with my family in my birthday visit to Lahore last year, literally the day it also hit theaters in the USA. However, The Godfather movie, made in 1972, did not get into theaters in Pakistan until later. Even then I was among the first to see it. I was amazed at how well made it was and it remains a classic to this day.
Fifty years go by so fast. I felt it would be fun to salute to the novel and the movie with this T-shirt half-a-century later.

Quite a lot of these lately, but not on this wall, and I love some good shadows!
Lovely relaxing Saturday today. Woke up naturally, no alarm - bliss - got a few bits and pieces done this morning, but then had a lovely quiet afternoon. Tim played his guitar for a while and I finally re-started my Spanish lessons on the Duolingo app. It was a beautiful sunny day - very very cold, but crisp and sunny - but I'm afraid I didn't venture out at all. Took this photo out of the bedroom window and kept my lazy arse indoors.
Continuing the lazy theme, we ordered a takeaway for dinner, snuggled up under a blanket on the sofa and settled down for another episode of Fargo :)
1) Find a colorful background. In the historical district of La Candelaria in Bogotá, Colombia there are many colorful street murals to choose from.
2) Carry not one, but two large DSLR cameras. This gives the perception that you are a professional photographer.
3) Communicate effectively. Learn the local language to effectively engage with the locals. In my case, it was Spanish (thanks to Duolingo for helping me brush up).
4) Patience. Wait for opportunities to come to you.
5) Ask a beautiful Colombian woman to serve as your model.
If the first four tips don’t work for you, tip #5 will always guarantee a great photograph!

Is That a Cursive “I” for My Sig or “-9” for Temps During K2’s Nightly Midnight 1-Mile Walk? - IMRAN™
Can you guess the symbology in this image? Here’s the funny reality behind the aerial view of my place on the Atlantic Ocean side of Long Island, which was being built exactly 30 years ago in 1994.
One of the reasons I didn’t get a dog for the first 25 years of living at this blessed home was the dread of walking it in the middle of winter—trudging through snow to scoop dog poop from 18 inches of snow! Talk about a literally “steaming pile of dog $#![.” 😀
Later, I tried to adopt one—a dog, not a “SPODS” (see why grammar matters!)—at my home in Florida. Despite the fairly strong Tampa Bay summer heat, at least snow wasn’t an issue. However, nearly six years passed before I finally got one as a gift.
That’s when my incredible rescued German Shepherd Dog, Kennedy, came into my life nearly six years ago. If you’ve ever had one, you know if there’s one thing GSDs love, it’s walking, or even running, as much as they can.
For the first few weeks, Kennedy and I walked literally 12+ miles DAILY. I went past 25,000 steps every day! Eventually, I had to cut back to an average of 10,000–12,000 steps daily, just due to a lack of that much time. But Kennedy’s impact on my life spanned every aspect of it. Best dog ever!
The even more active puppy, K2, joined us one year later. He shares the same love of walking. Now, here in New York, he’s ensuring I get my walks, even though it’s gotten cold.
Last night, the temperature dropped to -9°C. That’s why I was amused to see our walking track look like my initial “I” in cursive writing, as well as “-9” to reflect the frigid temps, which will get much colder in the coming weeks.
The little ‘French accent’ at the top of the track comes from my walking just a little extra to ensure I hit the 1-mile target for each walk. It has nothing to do with my ~1800 days daily streak learning that language on DuoLingo.

Took all the books to the charity shop this morning, and more carrier bags to Sainsburys to be recycled. Parking was a bit of a challenge, so after we dropped the books off and I was about to nip over to Sainsburys, I told Tim to go on ahead and then walked back home in the sunshine. Glad I did; it was lovely out there.
We cut each other's hair this afternoon. Then after a couple of other jobs (watering the plants, doing a load of Spanish lessons on Duolingo), I set up for the Big Garden Birdwatch again. Much more successful today - two magpies, a woodpigeon, three crows, a bluetit, and - excitingly - a great spotted woodpecker! I never would have spotted it if I wasn't doing the birdwatch - it was high up in a big tree opposite.

My Dutch friend Chris told me about a web site that teaches users a foreign language. Other than Chinese (my mother tongue) and English (my principal second language), I know a tiny bit of Dutch. So I said to myself, I'll learn a little bit more Dutch on-line. Duolingo (a Latinised word meaning bi-lingual) is free after all, so why not?
But the other day, Duolingo asked me to say to the microphone
Pardon, ik ben een appel, which means "Excuse me, I'm an apple."
I was both AMUSED and BEMUSED!
More sentiments of the day, symbolizing that I not only screwed off in the 12 semester hours of fashion illustration, I also minored in Spanish, and now I'm on Duolingo trying to learn enough to get through the menu at Taco Bueno.

This little shack of a restaurant provides delicious sandwiches, empanadas and complete meals to motorists. It had a perimeter counter and bar stools where patrons could sit and eat their food.
The people were very friendly and wanted to talk to the foreigner. My Spanish was very limited at the time but they were able to warn me not to keep my cell phone hanging loosely in the clip from my shorts as somebody might steal it. They also taught me the word emparedado that I promptly forgot as I started learning Spanish with Duolingo, emparedado came up in a lesson and I realized that was the word those truckers had taught me.
