It is the seat of the MacLeod of MacLeod, chief of the Clan MacLeod. Probably a fortified site from the earliest times, the castle was first built in the 13th century and developed piecemeal over the centuries. In the 19th century the whole was remodelled in a mock-medieval style. The castle is built on an elevated rock overlooking an inlet on the eastern shore of Loch Dunvegan, a sea loch.

Dunvegan Castle is located 1 mile (1.6 km) to the north of Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of Scotland. It is the seat of the MacLeod of MacLeod, chief of the Clan MacLeod. Probably a fortified site from the earliest times, the castle was first built in the 13th century and developed piecemeal over the centuries. In the 19th century the whole castle was remodelled in a mock-medieval style. The castle is built on an elevated rock overlooking an inlet on the eastern shore of Loch Dunvegan, a sea loch.

The promontory was enclosed by a curtain wall in the 13th century, and a four-storey tower house was built in the late 14th century. This tower was similar in style to contemporary structures at Kisimul Castle and Caisteal Maol. Alasdair Crotach, the 8th chief, added the Fairy Tower as a separate building around 1500. During the 17th century, new ranges of buildings were put up between the old tower and the Fairy Tower, beginning in 1623 with the state apartment built by Ruaraidh Mor. The old tower was subsequently abandoned until the late 18th century, when the 23rd chief began the process of homogenising the appearance of the castle. This process continued under the 24th and 25th chiefs, with the addition of mock battlements and the new approach over a drawbridge from the east. The present appearance of the castle dates from around 1840 when this process of "baronialisation" was completed.

The castle is a Category A listed building.

Located in the far north western corner of the Isle of Skye Dunvegan Castle was built in stages from 1360 but butchered in the 20 century when it was decided to merge together all of the previous extensions. The method used to complete the appearance was an early form of concrete.

For all MacLeods worldwide the castle has become a pilgrimage as the seat of the chief of the clan MacLeod. The current and 30th incumbent is Hugh Magnus MacLeod of MacLeod.

This stone cottage was built in the early 1700's and was home to the estate factor. It was converted to the Castle Laundry in the 1800's and is now a holiday let.

The 'classic' shot of Dunvegan Castle as it stands on a natural rocky outcrop on the shores of Dunvegan Loch, a sea loch open to the North Atlantic, reflected in its still waters.

From the grounds of Dunvegan Castle there's a fine view to be had along Dunvegan Loch on whose shores the castle stands. The loch is dotted with small islands, too many to name here.

Dunvegan Castle stand on a natural rocky outcrop on the shores of Dunvegan Loch, a sea Loch fed by the North Atlantic. The water here is Brackish as there are fresh water stream that also feed into it, but with the tide out, all that's left is rocks and seaweed.

The birds in the grounds of Dunvegan Castle are clearly used to people as this Chaffinch was quite happy to feed from the ground in front of us, not bothered in the slightest as we walked past him and his Missus

The grounds of Dunvegan Castle on Skye is divided into various features. The water garden has 2 waterfalls, of which this is one, which eventually reaches the waters of Dunvegan Loch below the castle.

After a hearty breakfast at the B&B, we headed back down for a second shoot at Eilean Castle. The conditions hadn't improved from the early morning shoot, in fact, they were getting worse - a completely blank drizzle affected sky so a couple of grab shots for the record - been there, shot it, t-shirt shrank in the rain, and we were on our way to Skye.

First stop off... the Skye bridge, didn't really float my boat if I'm honest and I like bridges. As Mrs R eloquently put it - underwhelming, which somehow became the word of the week, especially if you're not a walker, climber or photographer!

But have no fear the next bridge at Sligachan is the one.

Queue disappointment... the drizzle had followed us all the way, couldn't see a single mountain in the distance and worst of all every shot ruined by rain drops. All the more frustrating since I'd donned my wellies especially for a few river shots.

I don't really know why I'm telling you all this except to say two hours later the river Sligachan was a raging torrent and river shots were definitely out of the question. If you're on Instagram check out daveevansphotography and the video clip he shot just after we passed through.

What I'm tryng to say is our first day on Skye was a total washout and I've got nothing to post of any merit so here's to the next day and a morning trip to Dunvegan Castle. It's still raining and Mrs R is on brolly duties again - bless her!

On a positive note, they have excellent car parking facilities and a cafe here.

This flowers are for **Kerri** as thanks for her kind testimonial on my profile... :-)
