An oldie but a goodie from the Bears camp in Bourbonnais during pre season practice a few years ago. I thought it was appropriate to share this again since the 1st pre season game is coming up next week on 7pm, Friday Aug 8 @ home against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 1st game of the season is at noon on Sept 7 @ home against the Buffalo Bills.

Time to get in the spirit of the season :-)

I used Soft & Stable as batting and I highly recommend it! Lots of body with almost no weight. I added a lining (tutorial by smalltownthread.wordpress.com) and pull tabs at either end of the zipper.

This was my camp. Pretty minimalist, just a tarp, a small tent and some water jugs. No shade, no chairs, no table. Everything had to fit on my motorcycle!

Duffle has the Nikon Z9 & Z F, and the Nikkor Z lenses.

The yellow hard case has the Viltrox full frame Z lenses. [the case is too small to fit the Nikkors, and yes, this DOES mess with my OCD...

Next stop was Kaskaskia state wildlife refuge in southern IL.

Car is a Subaru Outback in case you are not familiar.

Me and 'Ed had got off our green dmu at Wolverhampton Low Level, we were going trolleybus spotting. On the opposite platform a whistle blew and on turning round there was 70054 Dornoch Firth just about to pull away, a quick dash and the Ilford Sportsman was extracted from bits of sandwich and notebooks festering in the dufflebag and this was taken as the loco eased away under Wednesfield Road Bridge, the bridge has trolleybus wires visible. This day we got thrown out of Oxley, refused even a squint at Stafford Road but were welcomed and got the run of Park Lane Bus depot. Ed is still a good mate.

Two years ago, pre-COVID, I signed up for a 18-day trip to Antarctica this fall. It is still unclear whether or not the tour operator will cancel the trip. But on the off-chance that I get to go, I've started planning out what to bring and making sure I don't need to purchase anything significant.

I'll be doing the trip with three bags: a checked dufflebag with mostly clothes and what-not, a carryon with mostly camera stuff, and a "personal item" carryon with my laptop and a few other odds and ends. I had very little to acquire in the camera department so I already have most of the gear that goes in there. Here's most of what will go in the camera bag for my trip (there's still about 15% of the bag empty when I pack everything in, so it'll likely be supplemented with a raincoat, hat, light gloves, etc. and maybe some birding field guides).

Roll over the image for notes regarding what's what.

Duffle Bag

the workroom

Toronto, ON

April 2015

Part 13 of 14

In 1994, two weeks after graduating high school, my brother Greg entered the United States Military Academy at West Point. We waited with him in a line that meandered around buildings, up staircases, past statues and plaques. He was 18 years old with a small red dufflebag in his hand limply filled with a pair of underwear, a razor and a toothbrush. The line dragged slowly, ominously. I was wearing a lime green t-shirt and denim shorts, with black sandals and a pair of sunglasses I bought at Sports Authority. Like I said, it was 1994.

The line eventually reached to a small gymnasium and we filled the seats, other families accompanying other young men and women minutes away from becoming new cadets. Some brass gave a speech or two, I can't remember a single word except for the last sentence:

"Alright, this is it. New Cadets, say goodbye to your families, and exit the gymnasium at the top of the steps and enter the hallway."

We only had the awkward space between the rows of seats to convey with hugs the words we didn't have time to articulate. And just like that, he slipped through our fingers, went up the stairs and the doors slammed shut.

I cried myself to sleep that night. And the night after that. And the night after that. I was thirteen, and from that moment on, everytime I said goodbye to my brother, I thought I was never going to see him again.

Imagine that heart of yours beating in your chest right now.... and imagine a vise. Take that vise, put it around your heart, and tighten it, and tighten it, and tighten it. And feel it year after year after year. This was, for me, the next 12 years of my life.

He graduated.

Flight School.

Apache Helicopter Pilot.

Kosovo.

101st Airborne Division.

9/11

Afghanistan.

And then this government of ours decided to go into Iraq.

2 months before the 101st Airborne Division and Greg's unit were sent to Iraq, Greg was rotated out and sent to the Advanced Course for Apache Helicopters down in Alabama. I don't know how it happened, whether it was an act of a higher power, or just his time to be switched out, but Greg stayed behind while all his men, the unit that he commanded and took responsibility for were sent to war in Iraq.

He was devastated. He was down. He felt guilty.

A few months later, he was sitting next to me on a beach on the panhandle of Florida. It was the off-season and we were the only ones on the beach. The Gulf of Mexico was unusually rough, with red caution flags flying high, but no rougher than a regular day on the Atlantic Ocean. Jason and Meredith had flown down from Vermont, which was still under a few feet of winter snow... their bare feet itching to get into the water. And so they came down to the beach and went in... and I followed a few minutes later. Greg stayed on the beach, buried in his book.

The waves were spectacular. We dove into them as they crashed overhead, we floated around and laughed, and then got pommeled again. It was exhausting, but absolutely perfect. I wanted Greg to join in the fun so I started making my way back to shore. But then a huge wave hit me from behind. When I finally got my footing I looked around and saw that Jason and Meredith were a good 25 feet behind me, which was odd because they had been right beside me before this particular wave. I turned back towards the white sugary beach, dominated by 20-feet dunes beyond it, and started walking towards Greg, only.... I couldn't.

There was a river of water rushing against my legs. I was leaning into it as hard as I could, but I simply couldn't make headway. It was an incredible struggle. It then dawned on me that we were in a riptide. I turned back around to check on my brother and his girlfriend..

but

they

weren't

there.

My pulse skyrocketted.

One wave went by. Another wave. A third wave. On the top of the fourth wave, I saw Jason, his left arm outstretched toward me screaming "HEEEEEEEELP!!!!!!!!" The waves were so loud, I couldn't even hear him.

So there I was, exhausted, standing in a powerful current of water, stuck between Jason and Meredith getting sucked out to sea and Greg reading his book on shore.

Greg looks up. He drops his book. Stands up. He puts his arms in the air and puts his thumbs up, and then puts his thumbs down. I answer his question with thumbs down. I see him bolt down the beach. I turn around, stick my hands up as high as they would go and wave towards Jason to acknowledge his distress call, hoping he can see me so he and Meredith can conserve their rapidly dwindling energy. Back on the beach, Greg finds three life preservers, throws one on himself and makes his way to the water. By this point I've gotten out of the riptide and pass him as he dives in to crashing, violent waves and starts making his way out to them swimming with one arm, the other arm holding the 2 life preservers.

The waves were daunting, refusing to grant Greg easy access to his little brother and Meredith. He turns back to me, a man used to difficult, stressful, life-threatening situations as his profession, and with a look of panic on his face, he screams out to me to call 911. I turn and bolt to the stairs, knowing that I had a 20 foot dune to get up and over to get to the nearest phone. Taking the steps 2 at a time, my heart pounding out of my chest, I couldn't look behind me. I was so scared that I was about to lose my family.

Out in the water, Jason tried to keep Meredith afloat, but as thin as he is out of water, is as heavy as he is within it. In trying to keep her up, he pulled her down. He had maybe 60 seconds left.. maybe 90. He was sure they were going to drown.

And that's when Greg got to them.

That guilt that Greg had felt when his men went off to war and he got left behind? Gone. He knew then why he didn't get sent to Iraq. There were 2 important lives that he had to save, and save them he did.

2 weeks after his last day in the army this past August, Greg gave one hell of a toast at Jason and Meredith's wedding. I sobbed through the entire thing. And remember that vise around my heart? It had released completely.

Playing Battle Dress Up, 2005, 8.75ft h x 16.5ft w, combine painting, mixed media on military tent liner. Tent liner (can be expanded to 27ft wide), 4-1960's West German military duffel bags opened, approx 45"h x 28"w each.

Before the stigma of Nazism, much of eastern Europe developed Arian envy, ie, German technology and ingenuity and obsession with precision. My father (born in Yugoslavia) was among those people who modeled their skills and their lives after German excellence. An attitude that was swept up with the condoning of Nazism. This is my background. This was the environment that I come from and this was the environment that gave me what I needed (the rebel) to be married to a Jew or the "Other". Two opposing forces or cultures that can still bring about a nurturing environment.

The process of reparenting my inner child becomes more complex as the adult emerges and the influences of a hostile global and social environment invade the innocence of childhood....thereby exposing us....

Linking female "Dress Up" and male "Battle Dress", it's a balancing of my own feminine/masculine energies, and the confusion of our times.

Young males going into the military to become soldiers (to become "men")... not always realizing fully (or deeply) what that means. Youths going off, carrying with them their sensitive innards. Here we see it illustrated in a very graphic way.... emotions and fear, childlike qualities, playfulness, feminine energies....

This piece contains: 4 West German military duffel bags from the 1960's, ripped wide open; my father's "Made in Germany" measuring tape (he was a tailor); newspaper page torn out from "The Standard", Montreal, Nov 27, 1926; letters in a bag; dictionary page, containing the words: "fundamentalism", "funeral'; dried white wildflowers; dead leaves; wire mesh; string; burlap; opened silk purse; fruit mesh bag; swatch of USA flag; pink lace; carbon paper (in my sisters handwriting) including words "bushel for bushel"; red ribbon; oil can "3-in-1"; cord; book of matches; newspaper page from "The Shawinigan Standard", Nov 14, 1945; polish letter from Warsaw, Poland written Nov 18, 1945.

*Exhibited at Sandra Goldie Gallery, Montreal, Canada, group show. Nov15-26.05.

One of my local thrift shops seems to have a system of gathering donated fashion doll "stuff" until they have a well-filled large zipper-bag before pricing it and putting it out for sale.

The bags are sealed and so there is a real element of mystery about what all may be inside, and at first, paying $15 or $20 for a grab-bag made me a bit nervous.

I wondered about condition, for one thing ... I don't expect like-new perfection in used toys, but would I be spending my dolly-bucks wisely?

After taking the risk a few times, I have really come to trust the discretion of the shop volunteers and I now look forward to seeing one of those zip bags appear and I'll grab it up without hesitation.

Quite often the dolls have been stripped, which can make identification challenging, and I'm sure I get it wrong sometimes.

Any help with ID of dolls, clothing or accessories is truly appreciated.

So --- here is about half of what I pulled out of my latest grab-bag ... What fun!!

Top row:

1. Easter Pretty Barbie

2008 -Mattel #N8107

** 1998 CEO / Generation Girl sculpt

-- I love the bob that her previous mom gave her, and she's still in her original dress, which is fab.

2. Fashionistas #104 'Pink Flare'

2019 - Mattel #FXL44

** 2015 Millie Face Sculpt II / closed-mouth

-- she arrived nude, but is otherwise like-new.

I gave her an outfit from my stash.

3. Polar Marine Biologist Barbie

2018 - Mattel #GDM45

** 2014 Kim Fashionistas sculpt

-- she was also stripped, but this dress was in the bag, thanks to Dolly Rehab I now know that it is from the Barbie Art Teacher (& Kelly/student) playset - 2002 Mattel #56004.

4. Baywatch Lifeguard Barbie

1994 - Mattel #13199

** 1976 SuperStar sculpt

-- missing only her dolphin friend, her shoes and her Frisbee, as far as I can tell.

The origin of the dufflebag is a mystery to me, but she had it over her shoulder and it contained her "smalls", such a nice surprise.

Bottom Row:

1. Light Show Princess Barbie

Rainbow Cove/Dreamtopia

2016 - Mattel #DPP90

** 2013 Millie opened-mouth sculpt

-- she's what I call a gimmick-doll, but her lights and music mechanism still work, for whatever that's worth.

I'll put her with my other gimmick-dolls (potential transplant donors).

2. Pink Ballerina Barbie

2015 - Mattel #DHM42

** 2013 Millie opened-mouth sculpt

-- this is the one doll in the bag that was actually pretty badly damaged, with dog-chewed legs - easily covered with a gown or long pants.

3. Camping Fun Barbie

2016 - Mattel #FGC94

** 2013 Millie opened-mouth sculpt

-- I gave her some clone clothes to wear

4. & 5. Fitness/Endless-Moves/Made-to-Move Redhead (Kristen/Barbie)

2016 - Mattel #DPP74

** 2010 Barbie Fashionistas Sculpt

-- I've been hoping that this doll would com my way, imagine my happy surprise to find 2 of them in this bag!!

The strappy denim skirt/dress is from a 2014ish Sparkle Girlz multi-fashion pack (ref: roxannesdolls.blogspot.com/2014/08/sparkle-girlz-clothes....) Tip of the hat to Dollie Rehab for that ID.

6. Play 'n Wash Pets Barbie

2018 - Mattel #FXH11

** 2013 Millie opened-mouth sculpt

-- The clone party dress seems to suit her well enough.

in 2 large canvas duffle bags with a harness ,restraints and locked mitts

the strap loot used in a duffle bag bondage scene. a harness, restraints, ear guards & mitts

I was commander, (TC) of this M1, it was pretty worn out, but you do the best with what you have. The transistor radio was tuned to J105 FM when it was a rock station. We were able to do that once in a while.

That's how my KLR 650 motorbike looked when I reached home, after spending a week at the Burning Man festival. I'd say there was at least 150 lbs of luggage on that work-horse. Plus a few lbs of playa dust!

It looked like that from the side.

The bike was so heavy that it was unstable on the kick-stand, so i was using a wooden stick to prop it on the other side.

My left pannier is an aluminium Happy-Trail box, while the right one is a Pelican 1550 plastic case. The rack is a knock-off of the Happy-Trail rack, and it proved to be pretty sturdy.

@queen_of_spades tagged me to do this #ws_everlastingedit chain where we keep adding to an existing edit and pass it around. My addition to this piece was the surreal elements in the upper left corner (juxtaposer) and used pixlromatic to add the lights and a bluesh hue overall. I normally flip pictures so much that I had to restrain myself from covering up all the other great additions to this pic. Restraint is good sometimes. Now I tag @dufflebag_ran
