the godfather of british hip hop in style
Rodney P (born Rodney Panton in Battersea, London) is an English[1] MC who entered the UK hip hop scene in the 1980s. He started out as a member of the London Posse, one of the UK's first home grown hip hop acts who were highly influential in the development of the genre. Rodney P has had one of the longest and most respected careers in UK hip hop. Also known as da riddim killa, he cites the reggae he heard while growing up as a second-generation West Indian immigrant as an influence on his dub-heavy music.
In 1986 The London Posse were invited by Mick Jones of The Clash to support his new band Big Audio Dynamite on a UK tour. A recording contract with Big Life records followed, and Rodney P went on to support hip-hop heavyweights N.W.A. and Soul II Soul in the early nineties.
The decision to guard his creative control led to the birth of his own label Riddim killa, a collaboration with Low Life Records, one of the leading labels of the rapidly growing scene. He was introduced to DJ Skitz by a mutual friend from the Deal Real workshop in the West End, and appears on Skitz’s albums Countryman and Homegrown volume 1. The pair went on to host a show on the BBC 1Xtra radio station, a leading black music network, which ran for five years until 2007. This development in his career led to involvement in radio documentaries, including a programme recorded in Johannesburg about the aftermath of Apartheid.
His other recordings include tracks with high profile DJs and producers such as The Nextmen, One Mike, Mystro and Plus One, and alongside fellow MCs Roots Manuva, Skinnyman and Dynamite MC. His open-minded attitude to music is demonstrated in his collaborations with dance acts Roni Size and Freq Nasty, and even more surprisingly with Björk and Nitin Sawhney, as well as Greek hip hop crew Active Member. He continues to dominate the live scene as one of the most sought after artists, taking the mic both on the UK circuit and with his contemporaries from across the Atlantic. Recent appearances include the MF Prince's Trust Concert with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys and the United Nations Habitat Charity Concert alongside Jazzy Jeff, Dead Prez and Mos Def, as well as regular appearances at London’s legendary Fabric live nights.
He was also featured on Mark B and Blade's We Stay Rough, which was on their only album The Unknown.
Rodney P is also currently the host on the television series "Dubplate Drama" shown on Channel 4, E4 and MySpace.

Negus Melody Sound System - Video
Channel One --- Rototom encuentra Valencia
A tribute to Jamaican Sound System (VIDEO)
In a tribute to the jamaican sound system culture. Charles le Brigand and Los Invisibles put together this art piece in Brooklyn NY. Ron Brodie was there to capture the moment and I edited this piece to the sounds of a couple tracks by Thievery Corporation to document and promote their art work.

Happy Birthday to Mikey Dread born October 21st!
Channel One's Mikey Dread is a legendary selector and the founder of the UK's Channel One Sound System. Alongside his brother Jah T, he started the sound system in the late 1970s, which became a staple at the Notting Hill Carnival and gained international recognition for its conscious reggae, dubplates, and positive mission to break down barriers with music

Sound System
Sound System explores the little known subculture of the British reggae sound system scene. The program follows veteran Birmingham dancehall crew Quaker City as they play out in Handsworth and features interviews with some of the major players in the British dancehall scene.
Featuring Lynval Golding of the Specials, King Tubby, Sir Coxsone and Carl from Quaker City who played his first dance in 1963, Sound System traces the origins of sound system culture from its roots in Jamaica to its beginnings in England in the 60's and its role in uniting disaffected black British youth in the 70's. The program touches on the positive social impact of sound system culture on black society in Britain and its influence on the development of a definitive Black British identity. Finally the program looks at how sound systems contributed to the birth of rave culture in the 80's.

Just had this dub plate made of Steve Cope's great song. Hear here: soundcloud.com/the-1926-committee/attitude-problem
It was mid-1990, and I was still sporting the double denim look, having fallen for The Smiths and Morrissey in a big way (I think I heard my first Smiths record the day after they split - perfect timing). Because I'd failed to get the grades for university the previous summer, I was in the middle of a year out. Where most people would've tried Inter-railing around baroque European capitals, I rejected such exotica in favour of an admin position at a haulage company in the spare office of British Gas in Preston.
Having also missed out on Spike Island and the second summer of love, I realised I was already past it at 18. Everyone else was wearing baggy kecks, had curtains for hair and waved glo-sticks in fields near Warrington at the weekend. It was time for me to learn about this thing they called "dance music". (Would you believe it? Music that you were supposed to dance to! I was used to nightclubs like Raiders, where boys dived headfirst into a post-punk thrash-punch melee the second someone played Buzzcocks, or kohl-eyed girls with crimped hair swayed mysteriously in mourning for The Sisters Of Mercy.)
So I asked one of the girls at my local vinyl-pile, Action Records on Church St, to whip me up a tape of salvation/education. A friend of a friend, Jacky (who, for some reason, preferred to be called Jessie, and was a big fan of Disney cartoons) thankfully took pity on me and did the honours. Not all of it was her choice. I asked for Hippychick (which famously sampled How Soon Is Now) as a sop to my indie heritage, though swiftly it became my least favourite of the tracks. (I hate hearing it even now, 'cos it lulls you into thinking some unwitting idiot has playlisted The Smiths on radio by mistake.)
No, I never did end up taking the train to the Bank Quay for late night raves. I didn't even really grow my hair. But I did add this to my list of Walkman-friendly cassettes for the rest of that summer. I went to university a year late. It's actually quite easy to get a place when you already know what your results are.
So, what did I learn from my "dance education"? Dunno. I spent most of my first year at uni playing George Formby songs at top volume and drinking. Let's look at that tracklisting:
1. World In Motion by EnglandNewOrder
It was 1990! Gazza's tears! E for England. John Barnes raps. Keith Allen makes a fool of himself in the video. Even I spotted that this was a rip-off of the Reportage theme that "the other two" did for Def II. Still the best England World Cup theme, though. I probably asked for this one to be on the tape.
2. Expression by Salt 'n' Pepa
Two years before it broke the top 40! Still the kind of story-telling, make-a-point rap that reminds me of The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, unfortunately, though I became a fan from the Very Necessary album onwards. And there's something about that Queens "nu yoik" accent that's very sexy.
3. Starfish & Coffee by Prince
A classic "list of random stuff" track in the mould of The Beatles' I Am The Walrus, as told by Dr Seuss. I did buy the single Sign O' The Times but Prince has never really grabbed me. My mate Stewart Tavener, who I was in a guitar band with at the time, loved this song.
4. Hippychick by SoHo
Probably the only non-Billy Bragg top ten song ever to namecheck the 1984-5 miners' strike. Subtle Soul II Soul backbeat, of course, as well as *that* sample.
5. Eye Know by De La Soul
Now you're talking! Something I had actually heard from out of the actual charts! And, because we were still in the midst of a Levi-flogging Stax soul revival in 1990, I was more than familiar with the source of the Otis Redding sample. Even *I* wasn't stupid enough to say things like "it's just talking over someone else's song", though. I bought my first Levi's in 1994, fact fans.
6. Heart by Neneh Cherry
Not "Hearts" as listed. My favourite bit of Neneh Cherry is her faux-Cockney accent on Buffalo Stance which, in turn, inspired a devotion for Betty Boo (I think that Doin' The Do was the first pop-rap 12" I bought). Note the number of "strong wimmin" artists on this tape. Girls, eh?
7. Fools Gold by Stone Roses
I was there! I was watching! I was in the audience! When Ian Brown shouted "Amateurs!" at Tracey MacLeod on The Late Show. For ages, I thought the line "Marquis De Sade never made no boots like these" was "My kemo sabe never made no boots like these". Tonto, you have lots to answer for.
8. Only Love Can Break Your Heart by Saint Etienne
Pre-Cracknell Ets. This was the track that probably got the most play from this tape. Love the haunting reggae feel reminiscent of The Specials' Ghost Town. I was presenting a radio show in 1994 so was able to select this to represent their "best of" collection. I also liked Cola Boy, so nyer.
9. Heaven by The Chimes
Whoomp! There it is! The Incredible Bongo Band's famous Apache drum loop gets its first outing. Can't forgive The Chimes for their U2 cover, though, sorry. When I was a littl'un, I used to listen to Radiophonic Workshop albums. I couldn't work out why people thought "electronic" music was new in the '90s.
10. Get A Life by Soul II Soul
Back when I was in college, I used to car-share: Pete Flowers driving, the above mentioned Stewart Tavener in shotgun and me sharing the back seat with a girl who was well into her dance music. She leant me an album called Breaks & Beats, literally just two sides of drum loops and "scratch" noises. The "stab" sample (of Pleasure's Celebrate The Good Things) used here was on it. I've still got the album. Sorry!
11. Shake Your Thang by Salt 'N' Pepa
The Isley Brothers via James Brown. You have to remember, in the charts of 1990, this stuff would've rubbed shoulders with New Kids On The Block, Londonbeat and the shuffling carcass of the Stock Aitken Waterman hit zombie. It was hard to spot good stuff. Also, Dee-lite's Groove Is In The Heart wasn't released until August, so you needed these mash-ups to pave the way.
12. Natural Thing by Innocence
It's got a whole chunk of Shine On You Crazy Diamond in the middle! That's the closest we got to "chillout" in 1990, you know. Except for the night I took magic mushrooms at a party and went to Avenham Park at midnight. It was very misty. I convinced myself I'd gone to hell. It was not nice.
13. Stepping Stone by The Farm
"There's always been a dance element to our music." Oh, okay, that was The Soup Dragons. The Farm were never fashionable, but as an Evertonian I have to forgive them because of All Together Now. Peter Hooton looked like your dad and couldn't dance or sing. Madchester made stars of them all. How ironic.
14. Fairplay by Soul II Soul
The dubplate classic that got 'em signed in the first place. Not featured on this collection thankfully is Back To Life, which used to irritate me, in part through overplaying and the New Jack Swing movement, but also as it featured on an '80s compilation album my mum had that she would always play loudly on Saturday mornings. Ride On Time was the first track and she thought it was hilarious 'cos it opened with the lines "Gotta get up, gotta get up..."
15. Buffalo Stance - Neneh Cherry
Jacky lived with my friend Sarah. They both worked in record shops, which I thought was the Best Job Ever in the '80s and early '90s. They were supercool, had a massive Marilyn Monroe Chanel No 5 poster in their living room and lived on rum and coke. I drafted Sarah into my shortlived band with Stewart Tavener (The Innocent Piglets - oh yes, we rocked the C86 fey indie vibe, my friends!) whose favourite track at the time was this one. I love the six note counter-melody that comes in at about 4'30".
16. Me Myself And I by De La Soul
Comedy! Witty wordplay! Social commentary! I've always listened to the words in songs and it always seems bizarre to me that so few lyric writers try to convey a clear, coherent message. As you might note by the inlay decoration (especially the other side), Jacky bought into all the "daisy age" guff. By contrast, in 1994, I was buying gangsta rap. Your fault, Jacky. Your fault.
17. Got To Have Your Love by Mantronix.
So good it could even survive a cover by Liberty X. In case you were wondering, and despite the hearts and flowers adorning this tape, there was never a "thing" between me and Jacky. I was nowhere near cool or confident enough, for a start. I did buy her a silver brooch thing once, and she looked STUNNING in a short purple sequin dancin' dress, but the relationship remained one of teacher and pupil.

A few months ago, I snapped a picture of my record collection, pre-sort and pre-count. So here's the breakdown.
1084 (12")
22 (10")
46 (7")
1152 total, including three that are 78 RPM.
My original estimate was "1000, plus or minus 150," so I'm just outsde my margin of error. Given the fact that I can't actually play those three 78s (I don't even remember where I got them), my total playable collection is 1149, just inside my margin... Dig.

Tyrone Lindo (born 16 November 1985), better known by his stage name Big Narstie, is an English singer, rapper and MC. He started his career in 2002 as a member of grime crew N-Double-A, though he is better known for his solo work and as an internet personality.
In 2006, Big Narstie signed to independent label, Dice Recordings. His track "Brushman" was also named RWD magazine's "Song of the Year". Sampling Coldplay, it was one of the first grime/indie tracks to be supported by personalities from multiple mainstream radio stations.
Big Narstie has featured on records including Professor Green's "Before I Die Remix" and N-Dubz's "N-Dubz vs N.A.A",[4] from their debut album Uncle B. Big Narstie continued to record and released BIG NARSTIE three other mixtapes: Mind of a Fat Guy, Drugs and Chicken, and I'm Betta Than U, which had guest appearances from Giggs, Scorcher, and Wretch 32.
in 2010 Big Narstie released his first mix CD of the year in February 2012, called Pain Overload. Shortly after, Pain Is Love was released in July for free download via SB.TV. Big Narstie's first official E.P, #PAIN was released in October and entered at number 5 in the iTunes UK Hip Hop chart and he won the 2012 Urban Music Award (UMAs) for Best Grime Act beating artists like Skepta, Lethal Bizzle and Dot Rotten.
In 2013, Big Narstie released his second EP Don't Fuck Up the Base. The EP Big Narstie was the highest selling grime EP of 2013. He also had a Don't Fuck up the Base EP launch party,[10] which featured music artists, Flirta D, Mic Righteous, Scrufizzer, Kozzie and DJ's, DJ Cameo, Charlie Sloth, DJ Logan Sama.
He performed at a number of festivals across Europe including The Wireless Festival, A Day In Dam with English Frank and Black The Ripper, the Hip Hop Kemp Festival in Czech Republic and The Outlook Festival in Croatia. He also won UMA 2013 Best Grime Act award for the second year in a row. At the end of 2013 he released an EP Hello Hi. with True Tiger. Noisey named Big Narstie as their name of 2013. and he also reviewed the year at Fact magazine.
In 2014, Big Narstie released What's the Story Brixton Glory Part II, where he covered various Britpop classics by artists such as Oasis. He then embarked on the Base Defence League (BDL) Tour around the UK, which had a host of music artists supporting him.
Big Narstie was featured in Craig David's single, "When the Bassline Drops", which was released on 27 November 2015.[18] The song saw commercial success, entering the UK top 10 and being certified Gold. In 2017 he rapped on the Enter Shikari single "Supercharge".
In 2017, Big Narstie appeared on The Big Fat Quiz of the Year in a team with Katherine Ryan.
Big Narstie was caught up in controversy in 2018 during an episode of Britain's Got More Talent when he was seen to be pushing contestant Robert White during a live show.
Away from music, Big Narstie has featured in the Channel 4 sitcom Dubplate Drama alongside N-Dubz and Shystie. He has also had a guest appearance in the films Anuvahood and London State of Mind. He is set to appear in the series Krish and Lee and the film Rise of the Foot Soldier 2. From 29 June 2018, he will host The Big Narstie Show.
Big Narstie is also known for his YouTube videos including his parody agony aunt style series Uncle Pain.
What a great photo it is on the cover. But what's the deal with the rest? Boring and uninteresting typography, laughable composition. If they just had used the photo for the whole cover and slapped a typically JA-medieval font 'pon top it could have been so much nicer.
Anyway ... this is perhaps my favourite album with Hugh! The credits claim it is Fatman who has produced it but it is obvious that he has only bought the rhythms from Jammy since it's more or less a deejay counter part to Black Uhuru's Love Crisis set. Classic songs such as »Satan Army Band« (also same rhythm as Jux wonderful »Love Tickles Like Magic«), »I Love King Selassie«, »African Love« and »Willow Tree« get the deejay treatment and it's a pleasure to hear.
This album is a true masterpiece! I can just imagine how incredible the sessions in London must have been when Fatman was drawing dubplate after dubplate with these cuts. I was born 20 years too late.

My record collection, ready to be sorted. I'll count them when I finish. Does anyone care to guess how many pieces of vinyl are in the pile? (Hint: Most full length LPs, like the Amon Tobin record on the front left, are two pieces, though a majority of this collection—I'd guess 80%—consists of 12" singles and EPs.)
our new mix: house, electro, bmore, dubstep, juke, ghetto house, olskool jungle, drum and bass, hiphop

We are proud to announce our festival's induction to the list of world's best music festivals! The world-renowned American Vibe Magazine has named EXIT and EXIT's Dance Arena one of three best destinations for electronic music lovers, standing shoulder to shoulder with Amsterdam Dance Event and Tomorrowland. It is interesting how the people at Vibe see Dance Arena: "In the far-flung location of Serbia, inside the spectacular surrounds of the Petrovaradin Fortress, you will find one of the world's most prized parties for EDM lovers. Exit Festival's Dance Arena is rightfully proclaimed as one of the true EDM meccas". Also, a widely known American internet portal Beatport included EXIT in their Top 20 Most-Anticipated Dance Music of 2013, stating that "adding an extra fifth day for its 2013 edition this July, it’s safe to say that this year’s Exit Festival will be its most epic ever."
Tradional as ever, EXIT's intent to drip feed the line up is torturous but you know that it's always going to be an enourmous one, upfront, varied and full of crazy times! First acts to be revealed on the Dance Arena are: Seth Troxler, Dubfire, Pan-Pot, Matador live, Subb An b2b Adam Shelton, Apollonia & Deniz Kurtel.
We are delighted to welcome back Resident Advisors' No.1 DJ Seth Troxler, since entering the scene Seth has ignited the world of house and techno with a barrage of critically acclaimed vocal jams. Under the label 'Visionquest' Seth, Shaun Reeves, Ryan Crosson and Lee Curtis have made some groundbreaking music, their most recent remix being a track from David Lynch’s debut artist album. Together their 'Visionquest' project has spawned the most exciting new record label in dance music today. Dubfire also makes a welcome return, after wowing the crowd's at the EXIT 10th Birthday with a legendary back to back (click2click as they called it) set with Richie Hawtin. This time around the Grammy-winning recording artist Dubfire will have the decks all to himself, ready to take the EXIT crowd on a journey with his renowned, seamless sets. Pan-Pot have become a dominant presence in modern techno, an ascent mirrored in the rise of their home label ‘mobilee records’ to the top tier of electronic music. They are “the dark side of the force,” they’ve melted minds, warped perceptions and reinvigorated the dancefloor with their heady, unorthodox sound. All we can say here in Dance Arena mordor is hell yeah, bring it on. We love techno and we know you do too so we’ve also got Matador live twisting your tiny little minds. We won’t tell you his real name because it’s not as scary as Matador but we’ll tell you that his journey into techno first began when listening to early dj compilations, 'Dave Clarkes World Service', 'Richie Hawtin's Decks Efx 909' and various others. "Deep, Dark, Chuggy, Warped, Trippy, Driving....once itʼs interesting, I’m on it" he states, so you can only imagine what he’s going to be doing.
For deep house lovers we introduce Subb An b2b Adam Shelton, from sultry and atmospheric sounds to the acid-drenched and techy, the pairing of these two will be something worth salivating over. Apollonia are the next big thing! They are a collaboration of three of Paris underground’s hottest exports, Shonky, Dan Ghenacia and Dyed Soundorom who are gearing up for a back2back2back showcase spectaculaire. They are Circo Loco’s favourite French trio, playing at the Ibiza club DC10 all summer and now we too will get a taste of that sweet honey. DJing together with one-vinyl-each, back2back concept for the full duration of the show… Booom!! And who said vinyl was dead?! And last but certainly not least we have the first lady to be announced, Deniz Kurtel a striking and uniquely gifted producer, her first releases were the ‘Whisper’ EP and her remix of No Regular Play's 'Owe Me' on Wolf + Lamb and recently she has released her 'Yeah' EP and remixed the single ‘Fables & Fairytales’ by N/A on Crosstown Rebels, and her debut album ‘Music Watching Over Me’ solidified her as ‘one to watch’ and we’re looking forward to seeing what she’s got up her sleeves.
This year's edition of the festival will be held from July 10 to 14 at the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad. So far, the confirmed acts include: Atoms For Peace, Seth Troxler, Dubfire, Pan-Pot, Matador live, Subb An b2b Adam Shelton, Apollonia, Deniz Kurtel, DJ Fresh Live, Friction & MC Linguistics, SKiSM, The Prototypes, Inspector Dubplate, Brookes Brothers and Dub Phizix & MC Strategy.

EXIT Festival Wikipedia:
EXIT Festival presents the Brookes Brothers, representatives of the Liquid Drum'n'Bass school, phenomenal vocal songs with a true D'n'B energy. Their love for this style of music was conveyed onto their song titles, such as “Loveline“, “Beautiful“, “In Your Eyes“, and many others.

EXIT Festival is gearing up for a Bass R:Evolution - taking their already renowned bass program to a whole new dimension by teaming up with UKF, the world’s premier league of precision bass scientists.
“Exit is undeniably one of the most influential festivals of our day,” states Jenni Cochrane, AEI’s Head of Events & Tours. “UKF and EXIT share one common goal in this partnership: to unite music fans from all over the world to create one incredible live experience.”
“We are very excited about establishing cooperation with UKF” said Dusan Kovacevic, EXIT festival founder. “UKF is the world’s leading platform in the bass music and it will certainly help bringing our famous bass program into even higher level”.
So far confirmed acts include; DJ Fresh Live, Friction & Linguistics, SKiSM, The Prototypes, Inspector Dubplate, Brookes Brothers and Dub Phizix & Strategy. From number one-smashing scene shapers to the some of the most cutting edge names in bass, these are just the beginning of a slew of bass heavyweights we will confirm in the coming weeks.
A Fortress Of Bass!
Ever since the first edition of Exit festival in 2001 ended with spectacular show of Roni Size with MC Dynamite chanting: ”Serbia, are you ready for the future” - the living link with the drum and bass underground and this unique Festival was obvious. Serbia was ready for the future and it came with the force of bass.
Is it something about the old fortress that is the home of Exit, or something about the hill overlooking Danube river, that brings out the amazing positive energy from the artists and audience - no one can tell for sure, but anyone will testify that the bass sounds never pump so strong as they do there in front of a 20,000 strong crowd gathered in front of the Main Stage every night, after headlining band finishes the last guitar based note.
Exit is the historical leader in promoting bass culture in the European festival circuit, bringing the best from drum and bass, hip hop and dubstep underground to the biggest stage with the “After 2am” program becoming one of the signature elements of the festival, giving Exit a special underground edge. Roni Size, Andy C, LTJ Bukem, Goldie, DJ Marky to Pendulum, Noisia, Zinc, Netsky, Friction, DJ Shadow all played important role in developing “After 2am” program at Exit, with hip hop additions of Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash, and later dubstep pioneers like Skream and Benga, Caspa and Rusko or Chase and Status.
EXIT is committed to bass music culture and is exited by what the future (R)Evolution will bring.
