The Southampton & District Transport Heritage Trust provided today's entertainment in the form of a Farewell to Southampton's Red Buses running day. With the busy hub in Pound Tree Road, there were 3 routes to sample using 10 preserved former Southampton buses ranging from a 1951 Guy Arab III to a 1999 Dennis Dart. A great day out and a chance to catch up with a great many people!!

Having noted an announcement earlier in the week by the Southampton & District Transport Heritage Trust (S&DTHT) and The Brickworks Museum (Bursledon Brickworks), I was keen to see the newly acquired vehicle donated by First Bus.

Over the years, it has appeared in many guises and has been converted into an exhibition bus. The two organisations, both registered charities, intend to promote themselves with the bus.

My records show that I saw Wright Endurance bodied Volvo B10B M504PNA looking very different at Fratton Park on 27 December 2010.

The Southampton & District Transport Heritage Trust (S&DTHT) has a large collection of important and attractive vehicles and does a good job of keeping them in the public eye at numerous events.

Preservation across a range of transport activities is demanding with lots of items to maintain and priorities to be assigned. The S&DTHT vehicles are in various conditions but these three Southampton survivors, seen at a Hampshire site, look rather splendid.

They are (l-r): Park Royal bodied Leyland Titan PD2 335/335AOW, Leyland Atlantean 133/TTR167H and Solent Blue Line ECW bodied Bristol VRT 37/NDL637M.

An old photograph (pretty big at 20" x 16" or 50cm x 40cm) of Southampton Corporation Tramways (SCT) tram No. 108 showing '6A - Special' destination blinds. By 1945 this was the last tramway along the south coast still operating , and the last using open top cars in everyday passenger service, so this car is very likely on a tram enthusiasts tour.

The 'photo' reverse has stamps with the photographer (and/or negative owner) name of Robert F. Mack (Bob Mack).

No. 108 was a 'Pullman Mk 1' *domed roof car built in 1930 by SCT at Portswood seating 28/44 on 2 plus 2 upholstered seats and running on a 4 wheel Peckham P35 truck. It was withdrawn from service in 1949 and sold to Leeds Corporation Tramways, the parts of the Southampton tramways systems that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closed in Dec 1949.

* The domed roof and small 25" wheels used on the truck enabled it (and others of the same design) to go under the arched centre of the Bargate.

It arrived at Leeds in Apr 1949, was renumbered as 290, ran in service in May, and in June was given a light blue and white livery. In 1951 it was reliveried in BET red and had red rexine seating fitted in both saloons, the seating changing to 24/36. In Sep 1953 it was involved in a collision, damage being so bad that it was withdrawn from service, the following month it was burnt at Lowfields Road Permanent Way Yard. The parts of the Leeds tramways systems that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closed in Nov 1959.

Any photograph, ephemera, etc I post on Flickr is in my possession, nothing is copied from another location. The original photographer may have taken copies from their original negative and passed them out (sold them?) so there may be other copies out there of your (and my) 'original' transport photo, although occasionally there may be 'holiday snaps' type photos where there are not any other photos exactly the same in existence.
