The Daily Shoot #97: An old adage in photography says if you want to improve your photographs, move closer. Fill your frame today!

An overview shot of the main pool at the Ross Jones Memorial Pool (a free-to-use public sea pool) next to the Surf Life Saving Club at Coogee, in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Ross Jones was a Randwick alderman with strong links to the Coogee surf club. The water in these baths looks so clean, clear and beautiful. A children's pool is linked to this main pool. Thanks to my neighbour Cindy, I now have some 2010 Olympic mittens! Woohoo! I'm ready to cheer on my country in style!
Backgrounds are tricky. They can make a subject stand out or distract from it. Make a photo with a good background today.

Okay, yeah. I guess should divide that by two, because each leaf of paper actually supports two numbered pages. But there are also a couple un-numbered end-pages, plus the covers, so it pretty much evens out ... ;-) Unfortunately, Anathem was upstairs and so it wasn't added to the stack.
But, for the record, (if you're counting):
• Cryptonomicon - 918 pages
• Quicksilver - 927 pages
• The Confusion - 815 pages
• System of the World - 892 pages
Anathem would add another 928 pages. All worth reading, if you're looking for a little summer reading project. For another view, you can see my 2010/365 - Day 51 (#ds97) "fill your frame" pic.

Skip Niklas Edin throws a rock late in Sweden's February 20th match with the United States. Sweden started the day 3-1, the USA 1-4, but the USA pulled out a razor-thin win.

I'm captivated with this extension tube. I think I'm hooked onto it for at least the next week. Here's some clear tube light bulbs on a dimmer, with them dimmed down low. Extension tube used to get up close and personal.
Also, can't believe it's day 50!

When the mundane is transformed...when the purely functional is recast...when the castoff is redeemed...it's an occasion of beauty.
Around the back of the Rogue Gallery in the heart of our downtown is a quiet, shaded patio. Around the edges of the patio is a fascinating assortment of art elements, many the product of reimagining everyday objects. This garbage can of many colours caught my attention as I was prowling about in search of objects for closeup photographs. There is no mystery what it is used for. There is no confusion about what it's filled with. But there is a proud elegance in the way it carries out its purpose.
While it may be true that much of life is the mundane detail of duty, may we carry out our work - both common and uncommon - with elegance and beauty and a style all our own.
"When you can do the common things of life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world” - George Washington Carver

The dailyshoot started soon after I got my first DSLR (the Olympus E520). It's been a great way to learn a lot about my camera and photography in general. However, I find myself less and less excited about each assigment, and each new photo seems to be a new low in creativity (as can be seen in the current subject). So I think I'm going to give it a rest for a while.
Thanks. It's been fun.

Finnish www.pesark.com/ has won the 1st price of an architectural competition organized by the Chinese government-owned Chengdu Hi-tech Investment Group. The construction process consist of creating a new office and apartment area of 120 000 square meters. The 150 meter-high office building in the above 3D pic will become the new landmark of the area.
Finnish main newspaper Helsingin Sanomat published an article on the construction process today with headline: "A new boost for Finnish export to China". This is great news for the recession beaten little Finland!

This time of the year I sometimes wish I could fast forward winter and make spring appear sooner. I sure hope all the snow is gone by Easter.

I've started reading "In Defense of Food" and I just spent 5 days with my brother and sister who are much healthier eaters than I. I'm going to attempt to begin establishing better eating habits. I'm not a terrible eater but know I have much room for improvement. My first attempt today was making our favorite bread and I used a combo of unbleached white flour and whole wheat flour instead of regular white flour. I'm going to continue to work on making small changes towards healthier eating and more than likely some of those changes will be described here.
Down at Chisholm's Mills, these horses stand behind the 'hay for sale' sign and 'this land is our land'. They stand that way every day, so I approached them for a photo!

Neal Stephenson has likely been my favourite fiction author ever since I read his 1999 novel Cryptonomicon, although I've got to admit that he has had my attention ever since Snow Crash in 1992. How could you not appreciate an author who names the main character Hiro Protagonist?
With each of his last five novels weighing in at an average of around 900 pages, I like to have the requisite time to devote to reading before starting one. In the case of the 3-volume The Baroque Cycle, I waited until I had copies of all three before starting the first. What an amazing read.
