Christine and I made our regular Costo run today. For those unfamiliar, Costco is a discount, warehouse, almost everything's sold in bulk, store where can buy just about anything your household might need (clothes, groceries, electronics, new prescription eyeglasses, new tires for your car (installed), etc., etc.).
Anyway, visits to Costco tend to be on the expensive side, so today we were smart and stopped at their food court before going shopping in an effort to cut down on the impulse junk food purchases. I had a slice of pizza, while Christine had pizza and this strawberry sundae (made with soft-served, vanilla ice cream) that was melting like gang busters before we even had a chance to sit down.
So, before it melted completely into a big puddle on our table, I grabbed this snap for today's Daily Shoot:
Make a photograph of something smooth.
Processed in Lightroom, with some cleanup in Photoshop.

The expression on two children's faces was priceless as they approached this kangaroo. They had no idea that they had scored a mum and her passenger. The long tail I recognise, however I never worked out which other black leathery part was protrudiing - perhaps the elbows.
There are over 40 different species of Kangaroo. The word 'kangaroo' is from the Aboriginal word 'gungurru' meaning grey kangaroo. However, the English settlers soon used the word to refer to any of the kangaroo family. The red kangaroo is a much larger animal than these greys. The female photographed here had eaten so much all she wanted to do was lie down. The joey was skittish and not keen to leave the pouch. It is amazing how the large joeys like this one can squeeze into the pouch. You never know which part of their body is going to pop out next.
Kangaroos belong to a group of marsupials called macropods, which means 'great footed animals'. Macropods hop using these strong back legs and the muscular tail helps to balance. I didn’t know that kangaroos are good swimmers, and will sometimes escape a threat by going into water.
A male kangaroo is called a buck, boomer, jack or old man. A female is a doe, flyer or jill. A young kangaroo is a joey, as are all marsupial young.
The forest is under my fingernails. A mountain stream runs through me. My skin smells like the rotting leaves underfoot. I inhabit these woods no less than fleeting deer or chattering chipmunks... Today, this hour, this moment, I am a woodswalker. Nothing more, nothing less. And that once-and-future life of mine back in the lowlands is only a vague concept, a fading memory.

The Bay of Chaleur is a fairly large body off the Gulf of St Lawerence, but when the winds die, so do the waves, leaving the water smooth for water activities like paddling. At these times, I can hear my grandfather's voice in my mind say something like "She's calm as oil out there." (Making sure to pronouce calm with the East Coast drawl and like the word cam.)

Yup - raided son's room again, and come up with a nice smooth bowling ball.
While the son loves bowling, these two couldn't have been less interested in the ball.

You can clearly see which ball Zachary prefers. :)
1/80 sec at ƒ / 3.2, ISO 400, 35mm (AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G, Nikon D7000)
Still playing around with my new flash - it opens up lots of different ways to shoot! Pitch black room, bouncing off the roof for the head shine, made it look nice and smooth.
