Last minute attempt today as the sun went down casting these shadows of the vertical blinds across the room. Similar arrangement to my shot for #ds435.

The warm sandstone wall at the front of my house, in the hard morning light, with the shadows cast by the verandah curlicue decoration and a pot plant.
For context, you can see a wider view of my house here.

OK, another attempt to take pictures of shadows. With Valentine's Day fast approaching, I figured I'd try the love/couple/affection thing and do this heart-shaped rendition with Christine, my wife (thanks, honey!). Why shadows, you ask? Well, today's Daily Shoot assignment was:
Make a photograph using hard light today. Feature the crisp and strong shadows as a major element of your photograph.
My original idea was to have us smooching, but the shadows weren't crisp enough, making it look like our faces were being sucked together. I'll have to look into building a DIY grid to help focus my light and see if that helps for next time.
Processed in Lightroom, with heart shape, gray background, and texture added in Photoshop.
Strobist: Canon 430EX, 1/4 power, gelled with Rosco #2001 "Storaro Red". Triggered with Cactus remote.
After some fumbling to get my new D7000 working with my SB800 speedlight, I was able to settle Mittens down in near darkness for this shot.

Most of the days during winter, the days are grey and overcast. The sun rarely graces us with Its' presence. Today was one of those days. It makes sense since the weather people are predicting 8 to 12 inches of
snow being dumped on us on Tuesday night. Well at least I got the chance to enjoy the beauty of her glow today.
Enjoy and remember to comment and critique.

The assignment for the day was "harsh light." The shadow between the trees is a person walking past. This was taken along the wall by the 798 art district in Beijing. That building in the back with "SeonBun" on the side is my apartment complex, but I live on the other side.

OK, so I had this idea for blasting coffee granules with an off-camera strobe to get some hard light which should look good on the irregular coffee granules that look like mini rocks to my vivid imagination.
Well, blue goes nicely with brown I thought so out came the blue background.
Oh, and I want some context so lets include the mug, spoon and hand. Hmm, I need to light them nicely so another strobe and reflector and...
...before you know it, I'd kind of strayed from the hard light brief of today's @dailyshoot assignment.
Oh well, it's early so maybe I'll post something else later that I consider more "hard lit."

I went with crisp shadows and Strong shadows, not necessarily the same shadows playing the same role.
This is a simple table top set-up on black seamless paper (actually firm art board)
Lighting from camera right on level with the objects is a 430EX II with a custom snoot & gobo and a Full CTO gel.
Just giving a pinch of detail is a 580EX II in a softbox filling from high and way back camera left, barely kissing the objects but keeping a bit of detail.

A great set of crossing shadows from a chair and table leg in the kitchen of my friend Donna's house.
It reminded me of the "no" type signs, but had to guess what was being prohibited.

I discovered a crisp and strong new focus today :)
On nearly the last day of the first month of this year's challenge, it seemed appropriate to dig out my friends Brandon and Jabs to build some shadows. They are wonderful subjects. They don't move from their spots, they don't complain, and craft services are pretty much nil.
If only my children worked as cheaply!

Well this is one of those assignment that I over thought until i couldn't settle on anything i had taken a picture of. Tonight i took a few more, i think this one came out the best. I really could benefit in a remote triggered flash for the NEX-5 to help me experiment with shadows.
This is for @dailyshoot s assignment #ds441 Make a photograph using hard light today. Feature the crisp and strong shadows as a major element of your photograph. I think i managed to make an interesting subject with some great shadows, what do you think?

Today's theme was about shadows and light - again, but I like this one. So it's my photo of the day.
I'm also submitting this to the MCP Project 52 - 5/52 - the theme is "Muse". I could go a couple of different ways - as in he a-muses me (LOL), or he definitely inspires me (along with my daughter) to be a better photographer.

I picked up this pine cone from the park the other day. Its shape, colours and texture are so beautiful. There are some white touches on the edges, which the hard light and transparent surface help to make it stand out.

This one again (http://flic.kr/p/9edwRB). Wandered down to Darling Harbour after work to find something interesting. My only plan was long shadows in the afternoon sun, found some tall trees that worked well. Added contrast and yellow tinge, added exposure to the sky to bring out more blue. This one beat out a landscape shot which was ruled out because it featured too much concrete.

There was just enough sunshine to cast some shadows within my tulips, adding extra 'layers'. It's funny, I purchased these tulips specifically for the colour palette - subtle white/green/yellow, but so far I've only shot them in black and white. The softness carries over nicely.

We had a beautiful day today here in Miami, I was a bit busy doing a lot of thing at the same time, but finally I was able to take a couple of shots to my patio furniture, only place where I was able to find some shadows. Well here it is enjoy and like always Keep Shooting.
