Letter writing, you know, the actual act of putting a pen to paper, writing thoughts and feelings, and putting a stamp on an envelope and mailing it to someone, is fading away. The only things we get in the mail, it seems, anymore, are bills and flyers. Even flyers are becoming less and less as more shops go online and try to be "green". Years ago, I had a few pen pals and I remember well the excitement of getting another letter and answering them back. Back and forth, the time it took to write and get a reply was often a couple of weeks or more, but sitting down with an actual letter, written on paper and reading it with a cup of tea in the afternoon was nothing short of blissful!

neither creative nor a qualitative good photograph - it's not my day for DS :(. At least it meets the theme.

This is a shot of the Australian Overland Telegraph Line at the rail crossing on Angle Vale Rd In Virginia Facing north, "The 3178 kilometre line was built in less than two years and joined on 22 August 1872. It linked Australia to an undersea cable from Indonesia that came ashore at Port Darwin and made communication between Australia and the rest of the world possible in hours rather than weeks."[1].
These telegraph pilons you see here were most probably installed back in the 1920-1940's to replace the wooden ones. This telegraph line was used into the 1970's to talk across Australia, it stopped talking internationally during World War 2's bombing on Darwin. These days it just sits there rusting away, and falling apart.
This is for @dailyshoot s assignment #ds440 Make a photograph that illustrates an aspect of communication. Australia may not be what it is today if it weren't for this amazing engineering undertaking, Slowly and surely the poles disappear as rails get widened new roads get put in and people steal them to sell at the scrap yard. Most people dont even realise what this did and where it went. I really like the shot, the rail line and the telegraph line slowly fading into the distance.

Carbide lamps were used to guide trains before there were electronic / digital guidance systems, VHF etc. - photographed at Riihimäki City Museum today
The lamp has served somewhere along the Riihimäki - Saint Petersburg Railway en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_rail_transport_in_Finlan...
I found a link in Finnish explaining that some of these lamps were used in Finland still during the 1960's. -When we complain how slowly changes are implemented ...we forget the quantum jump the tech has gone through before the currently ongoing changes.

My first idea was to photograph someone in conversation on his mobile as he walked in the street. I noticed several copies of this announcement during my photowalk so I changed my mind (anyway I think I would never have been brave enough to shoot a stranger in the street).
On my way back home, I saw a black cat who quickly disappeared in a garden so I called the number on the flyer and informed the owner. I don't know if it was her cat and if she found her but I don't dare calling again.

January 29, 2011: Today was Drop Off Rent Check Day for me. My complex gives us a self-improvement book, usually of Christian background, when the rent is paid. As a result, I have a developed a small library of these books.
So, I decided to revisit a theme I have photographed before.
Encouragement Changes Everything - because it can and it has for me. No telling home many times I have felt defeated by life and only to feel better after getting encouragement from my friends and family. Nancy is a great example of a person that encourages me no matter what. She's known me since I was about 8. She's seen it all.
Don't Throw Away Tomorrow - I remember my grandmother watching Rev. Schuller when I was a kid. I never finished the book, but at the time I bought it, I needed it and what I read encouraged me.
Emotions: Can You Trust Them? - Never read the book, but certainly a question I can ask myself at this moment.
Failing Forward - Another book I haven't read, but the title can apply to my life. A quote from Michael Jordan sums it best for me: "I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

and here I am getting communicated to old school by the Sunday comics (delivered around here on Saturday -- go figure). This sure would have been a lot easier to do if I'd been taking a picture of a model instead of myself. ;-)

On 5 July 2012, the United States requested consultations with China under the dispute settlement system concerning the latter’s anti-dumping and countervailing duties on certain automobiles from the United States.
Further information will be available within the next few days in document WT/DS440/1
What is a request for consultations?
The request for consultations formally initiates a dispute in the WTO. Consultations give the parties an opportunity to discuss the matter and to find a satisfactory solution without proceeding further with litigation. After 60 days, if consultations have failed to resolve the dispute, the complainant may request adjudication by a panel.

Bitey-Face: The boys could do this all day long. Floppy paws, ears, and tails, "soft eyes", not to mention the fact they are laying on their backs, all communicate that their impressive display of weaponry is all in good fun.

I went on a photo walk today and came up with nothing. Defeated, I tried wide-angling the inside of my computer and liked what I saw. Reminds me of a still from a "WELCOME TO INTERNET"-style infomercial from 1996. Did you know my CPU was made in 2007? I need an upgrade...
