I did love the shadows on this picture, that I took at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Cables, and want to share it with you guys in today's assigment. Enjoy and Keep Shooting

The moon does not cast a shadow in the traditional sense. It is lit from the side, and the back of the moon is the contrast shadow.
Once in a Blue Moon ... is a common way of saying not very often.
According to the popular definition, it is the second Full Moon to occur in a single calendar month. The average interval between Full Moons is about 29.5 days, whilst the length of an average month is roughly 30.5 days. This makes it very unlikely that any given month will contain two Full Moons, though it does sometimes happen.
On average, there will be 41 months that have two Full Moons in every century, so you could say that once in a Blue Moon actually means once every two-and-a-half years.

Last minute attempt today as the sun went down casting these shadows of the vertical blinds across the room. Similar arrangement to my shot for #ds435.

The sickness SAGA continues, my eldest and the last of the family fell tonight to this stomach bug that has bitten everyone else in the house. My poor baby is not feeling well so a lot of my focus was with him tonight. I hope your families don't get this nastey bug as it has been hell in this house over the last 2 weeks. Anyway, this is my shadow picture of some Diet Coke
Enjoy and remember to comment and critique.

My black rose ring, which is fully 2.5 inches in diameter, is obviously hand-made, as you can see its maker's finger prints on the petals. Sitting on a bed of fresh water pearls in the bright morning sun.
Taken with iPhone 3GS.

Went the opposite direction on this assignment. Wasn't sure how this would turn out, but I quite like feel of it. Mysterious. What IS behind that door....?

Daily Shoot Assignment 435
"Use hard light that casts sharp distinct shadows in a photograph today."
Today's Daily Shoot assignment was:
Use hard light that casts sharp distinct shadows in a photograph today.
In keeping with the notion of "spring", I decided to try a still life with daffodils (I briefly thought about swiping a couple from our next-door neighbor's garden, but thought better of it and bought these from the local florist ;-) ).
My original idea was to take a picture of just the shadow of the table/vase/flowers lit by a "window". That sorta worked, but then I decided to try this shot, and liked the results better, so decided to use it as my 365/Daily Shoot shot.
Processed in Lightroom.
Strobist: Vivitar 285HV, 1/16th power, shooting through a rectangular 4" x 5" hole in a piece of cardboard, against a "wall" (really just a white sheet). I was trying to mimic the look light from a window might throw (complete with window panes ;-) ), but didn't quite achieve what I saw in my mind's eye.

Shadow of my hand.
Unfortunately I could not use the sun for good shadows. I went to a local store and bought a 120 watt halogen spot. It took me some time to give a hand to my shadow "kid" hand.

shot of an orchid leaf against a wall, b/w, experimented with spot light, pp: adjusting brightness and contrast. I like the floating shadow, but not the spotted background. At the moment it is like it is (not every shot is the best ever ;-).

Sometimes I think the DailyShoot assigner knows that a particular assignment is going to be very hard for me. Yesterday we had bright sunny skies and sharp shadows everywhere. Today was grey, cloudy and very soft light-wise. So I'm stuck with the last resort - shine the light on the kids toys :).

Strange item for me, it's a tripod apparently, improves your focus and clarity really useful with a camera.
The point of the tripod is facing due north with respect for a guy who has been turning out some excellent night shots from Northern Street's in the UK. Why not check out his photostream www.flickr.com/photos/modsoul_junkie/ nice bloke to

We had sunshine for about an hour this morning but it was too cold to go for a hike. You can see how crystalline the snow is. Thankfully I found some interesting shadows in my own yard. This is actually my swimming pool - buried under several meters of snow. I miss it!
Have a look at my 365 pic for today too. It was a toss-up between the two. I like them both for different reasons.

Yes, yes. The shadow in this shot doesn't matter in the least. Ah well. I played with the shadow and hard light thing a lot, coming to the conclusion that I refuse to shoot shadows again until the sun comes out. Is winter over yet?
In the absence of the sun, I went scrounging through my tin collection one more time and found the Super Mario 1-UP mushroom. A tin mushroom that appeared in a video game. That's almost like being outside, right?
Sigh.

...button. It's Winter and I've been doing a lot of indoor flash photography; I've been looking for different ways to soften the blunt instrument that direct flash can sometimes be. But not tonight!
Direct flash, full power and zoomed to 105mm, camera left. Exposure increased slightly in post processing, plus other minor corrections.

Interesting what David Wilson writes about informal learning:
"IMHO, the more "informal learning" is separated from work processes and the social processes of work, the weaker and more artificial it gets! That's why many of these solutions end up getting limited usage and becoming redundant, especially when they duplicate functional systems that already exist are delivering value for their members."

Walking back to the classroom from morning recess, DeeDee asks me, "What's your photo of the day today, Mr. Cosand?"
"I'm not sure. Let me check," says I.
Tap...tap...tap...wait....."Oh. I need a sharp, distinct shadow."
"Like those?" asks DeeDee, pointing at the sidewalk in front of us.
"Um, yes."
"Cool. I just found your photo for you!"
Thanks, DeeDee.

Funny thing with today's shot, I had the set up all ready to go (well, in my head anyway) early EARLY this morning but just didn't know what the subject would be! I have had a Sentinel's (creature from any of the Matrix movies) tentacle laying around my desk for some time (don't ask why), what better figure to battle this monster than a Start Wars Storm Trooper? And how can I not change the wording of "rebel scum" to "Sentinel scum"? I mean come on, I just HAD to do it!

Another photo I'm really happy with. Walked through many a spiders web to find this, late at night with 3% phone battery and still listening to Sir Bill Evans (Protip: Airplane mode). B&W and tight vignetting discards the bland foreground road and highlights the shadow. Added exposure to the cyclists so they pop a little.

Todays @dailyshoot assignment was #ds435 Use hard light that casts sharp distinct shadows in a photograph today. I found this hard because by the time i got home from work the storm clouds had rocked in and the choice of light sources was fairly minimal (i suppose any light source would do). But what i decided to do is try a negative shadow self portrait, after playing i finally got a one i was happy with, hope you like :P

I watched out the window all day for some decent light to provide hard shadows, but that clouded-over "available gloom" was predominant again today. And then, of course, it got dark.
So, I hastened to the Bat Cave and managed to snap this shot of The Caped Crusader, fist raised in challenge to The Joker, who had just made off with my sandwich.

One of muffett68's ducks made its way to the west coast and was bragging about how tough he was to the locals and quacking about all the snow and cold weather back east. Wire skateboarder dude went toe to feather with him and was able to wrangle him in. It was a bit of a battle because, as you can see, this is one mean devil duck. Skateboarder dude had to wrangle him by the horns and leap aboard before he took flight again. All is well now, skateboarder dude and devil duck have become fast friends.
Okay, I'm no Crow when it comes to story telling but there it is.
