The Daily Shoot #ds423 - Make a photograph of something shiny or glossy, but not transparent. Emphasize the effect of the surface

Tried another "The Daily Shoot" assignment. "Make a photograph of something shiny or glossy, but not transparent. Emphasize the effect of the surface."

Shot my flask with a photo on the monitor to reflect some colors and make the shot more interesting. Also though the the curvature of the body brings out the effect of the shiny surface.

Created for The Daily Shoot on January 12, 2011.

The shiny surface of the Packard Bell DOT stars in todays assignment as a shiny surface. I deliberately tried to put the focus on the 1:2 mark of the lens in the surface, to emphasize its shininess most.

Green - but is it green as in hope - or green as in face after a terrible experience? These snow covered balloons were found outside a nearby training studio. Do you want to enter?

It's a conceit, but...it's got a tag, glossy surface, and liquid! The photo has three DS tags, too.

I have other creative outlets in my life; and unfortunately some have taken a back seat since I have started my 365 project. Don't get me wrong learning new things in my photography has been great but the airbrush has taken a back seat. So today I thought I would let it SHINE as the star of my shoot today. I will most likely pick this up again and spray my boys some much needed new t-shirts of their favorite characters. Featured in this image is my favorite airbrush. It is a MOJO Airbrush, which is a Modded Airbrush from Mike Learn, a fabulous Artist.

Enjoy and remember to comment and critique.

Focus should be the shiny frame of the painting - it's very discrete - I know. Anyway I chose it for the assignment. I was surprised by the effects (reflection versus illusion)

Ooooh, shiny!

I love tins, and can't resist them, no matter what the contents. I've passed this along to my son, which he might curse me for later. This Jones Soda Candy tin is not only adorable, but I love the hinged lid with the quote inside. At about three inches high, I'm sure that it's the perfect container for something... I just haven't figured out what.

Apologies to my Flickr friends today - I simply must get to bed so I won't be commenting on many photos tonight. I promise to catch up soon!

The tree will be gone tomorrow, so this is the last christmassy picture until later this year.

Since this photography passion of mine shows no signs of abating, I've been indulging it with some new toys. My latest acquisition is a new 'walking around' lens that will also be my main landscape lens, Canon's 24-105mm F/4. Add this to my other Canon F/4 L series lenses - 70-200 and 300mm, as well as my 100mm F/2.8 macro and I've just about got it all covered! I'm a happy photographer :-)

For just about forever, I've had a set of extension tubes on my wish list. When I was looking for something yesterday, I discovered that my wife already owns the exact set I was hoping for! Today, I decided to give them a try.

This is an image of the business end of a Zoom H4n Handy Recorder. I've got the 12mm and 20mm tubes stacked on my 24-105mm zoom lens, zoomed to 105mm. The front of the lens is about 7 inches from the H4n.

Image processed in Lightroom, with a trip to Photoshop to do some healing brush clean-up.

Paper napkin on glossy photo paper. The napkin package promised they'd be sparkly; I dunno, I don't see any sparkle.

Direct flash, 1/32 power. The napkin cuts off the direct reflection blob from the glossy paper. Minor changes in post-processing to exposure, recovery, and blacks.

You know it is easy in life to get attracted to the shiny new toys, but too much shine may distort your world view.

Or I just like the reflections off of my truck.

Misread the assignment, I was going *for* transparent... keep that in mind. Christmas decoration was a little bland on its own so I put it on a old photo album, lots of light sources in the background. I liked the double catchlight on the decoration's surface and its opposite surface... but that wasn't the point. Ah well.

BTW, it's a perfect example of a high contrast image that's not a low nor a high key image.

A good ol' Nor'easter hit New England today, dropping two feet of snow in most areas. Schools and companies, including mine, were closed. I thought a nice pot roast dinner would be a perfect "Snow Day" meal so I slow-roasted it all day.

When I put some on a plate, I noticed that it also seems to fit today's DS assignment, too, with that nice glossy surface... mmmm...

Excuse me, now... I've got to go eat!

like the way this one fills the frame - but liked the shiny on the other one.

Shiniest thing that was right out in front when I was looking. Love my stainless fridge, but would not have had anything to do with it when the kids were around and growing up. It is a magnet for finger prints and smudges. White textured is the way to go with a family around or if you don't have the time to wipe the handles down everyday!

Both of our children are hockey players and as a result we have a rink in our backyard. These skates are about 10 years old and were first worn by our son and then our daughter. They both wore them for state championship games in which both their teams won. We've offered to buy our daughter new skates but she refuses to part with these well loved and broken in skates.

Thankfully, it looks like the worst has passed in Brisbane … but a massive recovery & cleanup is now required.

Today’s dailyshoot.com assignment was “Make a photograph of something shiny or glossy, but not transparent. Emphasize the effect of the surface.” Looking around the CBD this afternoon I stumbled across this street corner (cnr of Margaret & Albert Sts, for those that know Brisbane) and the assignment immediately sprung to mind. Definitely ‘shiny’ and ‘glossy’, mud is certainly not ‘transparent’, and really does ‘emphasise the effect of the surface’.

Berlin main station. Since I was not allowed to do this on the real tracks I had to use these... :)

Shot in response to the Daily Shoot Prompt, " Make a photograph of something shiny or glossy, but not transparent. Emphasize the effect of the surface. "

I started out just looking for something "glossy" to meet @dailyshoot's assignment, but the text on this bag was pretty interesting. I did some severe Lightroom adjustments beyond what I'd do to a normal photo, but I think it accentuates the shininess of the plastic, and the saturation of the red text.
