My youngest son's GodParents got him a really nice drum set for Christmas, per our suggestion. But this set is so much nicer then I expected. The boy loves it, plays a little bit each day; and he has remarkablly
good at it. My personal favorite is when he hits the sticks together and counts to four before drumming.
Enjoy and remember to comment and critique.

I remember my sister using this metronome for her piano and clarinet lessons when we were kids. She was really good at the piano.

"Create a photograph today that illustrates or shows rhythm."
Rhythm is usually thought of as a musical concept, but rhythm in visual art shares the same principles in that is has to do with a pattern of repetition of elements. Like music, visual art can have a regular rhythm - that is, a pattern where the elements are of similar intervals, size, or length. You can also have a more natural flowing rhythm created through curved lines or shapes. I liked the candy necklace pieces for this because the round pieces themselves form a very regular rhythm, but the placement of the pieces is more flowing. Initially, I was just going to photograph the mosaic, but the pile of candies showing the in-progress nature of the work made it more interesting, I thought.

Was ill, a button broke on the camera... bad.
So its time to throw in some music, I guess.
Our fishy friends at work. We use them for inspiration when we feel the need to get up and throw them around the office, like in Seattle's world-famous Pike Place Fish Market "Fish Sticks" video.
And, it helps to work with a music coordinator with good design sense, thanks Susan Davies!

My wonderful daughter, Abigael, has always been a ready collaborator on my Photo of the Day shots. Her good nature and ready attitude make her a great partner.
When I sounded the call for a foot this afternoon, she was the one to answer my pleas.
I like how the long exposure - along with Abigael's impeccable foot control and sense of timing - help to portray movement.

After a few failed attempts here's how I finally managed to get some photographable ripples:
Water coloured slightly blue with some food colouring to make it more visible.
I've placed the soup plate on top of a fondue stand so it would resonate more and then struck the side of the plate with a drum mallet.

My son had no problem pouring water on his daddy's snare drum and doing a drum roll for this shot. lol
Big speaker with metalic hex grille. Taken with iPhone 3GS.
Found in Cash Converters on Gouger Street, Adelaide. I like the reflective grille with the big woofer inside.

I just couldn't come up with anything that I thought represented rhythm in any way today.
When the sewing machine got busted out to make a repair, I figured that was as good as I was going to get today.

A couple of "bits" fell off my daughter's clarinet while I was staging the shot; I didn't know how to put them back on O.o After the shot, I handed the clarinet back with a guilty "thanks, I think you'll need these bits." Oops.

I'm going for visual rhythm here, thickness, perfect vs. staple-bound, color.
Flash shoe-mounted on camera, full power, bounced off the ceiling. Various changes to tone curve and exposure in post-processing; the original is a tad dark and flat.

I did not want to be too personal with a special something or someone--I rather went with a simple "memory" as in a reminder. The low key is self-evident, and the rhythm is in the periodic events in the calendar...
I know, I'm cutting corners. At least I took the camera out, and took a couple of shots. Please pardon the (wintery) dust.

The instrument I used to enjoy hearing my daughter play. She was first chair sax for five years and then lost interest and played for one more year to meet her fine arts graduation requirement and then hung up her instrument. It's sad really to know that this is sitting in her room and not making beautiful sounds anymore. We purchased this one (a semi-pro model Yamaha) at the encouragement of her instructor as she was doing really well. I need to dig our my e-commerce savvy and put it on craigslist or ebay so that someone else can benefit from it (and save a few bucks as well).
On My Mind
The first song I taught myself to play with some resolve on the harmonica when I first picked it up last summer was Willie Nelson’s “You Were Always on My Mind.” I’ve always considered it a passionate, wistful, honest tune – practically made for the harmonica. Here’s a clip of me playing it --> www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEaSOSlsNk0).
By the way, while I consider myself a music devotee, I never received any formal training in an instrument. I taught myself a couple of simple songs (Jingle Bells, When the Saints Go Marching In, Ode to Joy) on the piano that required my hands to stay on the same keys. The harmonica is great because it’s so simple to play. You’re basically just blowing and inhaling on the specified hole (each of which is numbered). There’s no music to read – just numbers. That system makes it much simpler for someone like me who can’t read music well, if at all. Plus, it’s cheap, and it’s got a soul like few other instruments do.
Been looking for a shot all day taking picks of patterns etc, but the shot finally found me, this was the brilliant sunset this afternoon, i just loved the blue sky with the crazy orange. It also pains me to think of all the people sitting in their houses watching TV missing a sunset this beautiful.
This is for @dailyshoot s assignment #421 "Create a photograph today that illustrates or shows rhythm." I think the shot of these clouds perfectly suits the rhythm of the day.

For today's dailyshoot.com assignment of "Create a photograph today that illustrates or shows rhythm" ... how did we get any rhythm before ipods ?
1/100 sec at ƒ / 2.8, ISO 2800, 16mm (Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX, Nikon D7000)
I am sure most would consider this a bad photo. Hehe. I picked this kind-of-incorect-focus-point photo over the better ones as my camera strap snuck in this shot and I liked the red. Added the retro contrast-less styling postprod. Oh, and rhythm relates to the tunes that come out of the armrest? I loosely follow the assignments when it's convenient... :)

The Sun sets and the ski hills light up. Not exactly a circadian rhythm, this is none the less part of the rhythm of life around here. Since we had sunshine for a while this afternoon I was looking forward to a beautiful sunset. As you can see, I was disappointed. It was as though the cold sucked all the colour out of the sky.

Wanting to see if I could get a bit more out of yesterday's @dailyshoot low-key assignment, I took today's topic and returned to the same setup as before, to play around with the camera settings and a couple of mini-LED lights that I picked up today after school from the local Canadian Tire. While remaining quite the challenge, I got a bit more familiar with the various options on my new camera, and so I'll accept this picture for today's assignment.
