I had a challenge today - which image to post. Both related to today's dailyshoot.com assignment of "Use strong converging lines in a photograph today. It's your choice whether or not to show the vanishing point." One taken 'in the field' at ikea of all places, and one taken in the 'studio'.

In the end, I decided I liked my creative one better.

The other is below in the comments, which do you like ?

I cheated a little on the assignment, since played around with the curves and added a little more contrast. Other than that, I removed some dust (must clean sensor too), and cropped into square.

It is also part of my .ducklings set.

I will tell you my age but I will not tell you how many shots it took to get this little guy to cooperate.

So why did I decide to post this picture in The Big Five Two group (January - Me, Myself and I theme) . . . because it is my favorite picture of the week? No because I think it does say a lot about me so I will use it as a way of introduction.

1. I love shooting photos. I just completed the 365:2010 project and found it extremely valuable. I

have been learning about photography over the last three years thru friends, a fun photography

club filled with experienced photographers, books and Flickr. I predict it is a hobby that will

keep me learning new things for many, many years.

2. I like a challenge.

- This shot was taken to fulfill the daily shoot assignment of "Go high contrast today".

- This shot was also taken as a challenge to my $99 canon ef 50mm 1.8 II lens. The nifty-fifty

had not performed well for me in the past so I spent all week shooting it only to see how i

could better use it before it ditched it for a more expensive 50mm 1.4. I'm happy to say we are

now working together better and this lens will stay as a fun part of my kit.

3. I like complicated things.

- Can I just buy a carton of yogurt at the store? No I have to make my own as evidenced here.

- I prefer shooting on manual, in camera raw format.

- I prefer a pc over a mac maybe because I like complicated things. My husband just

got a mac and contrary to "just plug it in and you're done" claims, I have spent some time

finding the machine number, adding it to our router thru an online program so he can access

the internet, going thru a few steps to get it to join our home network of pc's and this weekend

I will be installing printer software because it doesn't seem to "just find" the printers shared on

our network. love it.

4. I like natural things, ie, natural light and natural food and lots of nature shots. But I also love the post processing part of photography. Overlays and actions and levels and vignetting . . .

5. I hope this helps you know a bit more about me. I have loved the interaction and sharing I have had with many of you who are now in The Big Five Two and look forward to making new Flickr friends.

6. One more thing, this is probably the most words you will see me post at one time. Expressing myself with words is a challenge I don't do well . . . I'll stick to the photography.

Well, today was my first day back to work. I scanned my office for photo opportunities to match today's @dailyshoot theme of "contrast" and looking up, I noticed how the fluorescent lights were housed in shine metal which was reflecting light on one side and very dark on the other. Lovely contrast right above my head!

I shot today using just my Apple iPhone 3GS which I thought would make a pig's ear of fluorescent lights but as it turned out, it captured them quite nicely. I didn't alter the white balance-I like the warmth of these lights.

Apart from cropping and straightening a wonky shot, post process was limited to increasing the blacks a little, boosting the vibrance/saturation a touch to really bring out the warmth and removal of some noise.

This artwork (it's only a part of it) in the stairway of a public institution in Basle was just rich in contrast. I didn't have to adjust.

I took some other photographs - I like them - but I am not convinced of none of them if they fit to the assignment. So this one will be posted :-)

I especially liked this post which was linked through one of the comments:

...In business, we have to be discriminating about when we choose to challenge ourselves. In high risk, high leverage situations, it's better to stay within your current capability. In lower risk situations, where the consequences of failure are less, better to push the envelope. The important point is to know that pushing the envelope, that failing, is how you learn and grow and succeed. It's your opportunity...

I was at Pease Air Terminal tonight for the Pease Greeters Annual Holiday Party. Although I already had a few photos in mind for today's Daily Shoot assignment, when I spotted this unit coin mounted on the wall, I quickly changed my mind.

2nd Brigade 502nd Infantry Regiment landed at Pease International Air Terminal in Portsmouth, NH for refueling and received a warm welcome from the Pease Greeters. Before they reboarded their plane to continue their journey, they gave the Greeters this challenge coin from their unit. It is now proudly mounted on the wall, in the Hall Of Heros, under their group photo.

From Wiki:

The 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment (502nd PIR) was established during World War II as a regiment of the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army. The regiment saw substantial action in World War II and later went on to deploy in the Vietnam War, the first Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Since 1974, the regiments has been classified as air assault infantry, and at present, the regiment's two battalions are under the command of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.

Symbolism:

The blue is for Infantry.

The grasping eagle's claw is a representation of the airborne functions of the organization.

The motto is expressive of the power of the organization.

I mostly ignored dailyshoot's assignment today, instead, interpreting it as an excuse to try "high key" photography. I pretty much knew I'd be photographing my foot, which is still sore from a bike crash almost a month ago, and it sounded like a perfect chance to explore high keying in Lightroom.

The student:computer ratio in our school improved by a considerable factor today, as our IT department delivered some more of our hardware for our netbook project. We've had the charging/sync cart since August, and we've had functioning WiFi and 4 netbooks in the school since early December. With the arrival today of 8 additional red and 8 additional blue netbooks, and the anticipated re-imaging of our remaining original 4 black netbooks to bring that number up to 8, we're soon hoping to have 24 wireless-enabled mobile computers to use right in the classroom instructional space. If we contrast what we can do with these resources with what we can't do without them, I think one would say we're likely to see some pop in our program and in student learning.

(And I think the black and silver of the cart contrasts nicely with the floor, and the colours of the floor and the netbooks pop, too. This photo was all done within the camera, no PP.)

I did not get a "pop" today, and I still struggle with high-contrast pictures. This is more or less out of the camera with a bit of cropping.

SOOC - I didn't have a tripod with me, so I balanced my camera in a little tree. I pass this church every day without paying much attention to it. Still busy with traveling, and sporadic internet access for the next several days, so apologies first for what may be some subpar daily shots, and second for some delay in commenting on your shots and replying to comments.

Not the greatest shot for the assignment - not really especially high contrast, and not done in-camera. The prompt got me thinking about HDR and so that was the direction I went in.

This image was formed from three shots at different exposures, taken on a trail in Devil's Lake State Park in Baraboo, WI.

These are the software details (I deliberately went for a very "hdr" look, thought at least for my very first hdr it would be appropriate =):

Operator: Mantiuk06

Parameters:

Contrast Mapping factor: 0.3

Saturation Factor: 1.2

Yes, I know, it's the same carpark again, but I love it! No tone mapping today, in fact very little proccessing at all apart from sharpening and stitching.

Saturation: 0

Contrast: 0

I was pretty amazed how high the contrast came out. I normally turn the contrast up on all my photos. It rained a lot today and that seemed to naturaly 'turn up' the contrast on

everything!

I like this enough to post, but ultimately a project365 'reject'. I never thought I'd be rejecting any images this early on.

Topic: Go high contrast today and make a photograph with tons of pop. Do as much in-camera as possible.

I'm still in the Christmas mood today, especially that it's the first time Twelfth Day is a public holiday in (recent) Poland.

Red and green commonly are considered contrasty, and I've myself chosen the background/light source that enhances the texture and nicely and evenly touches the plant. I'm talking about the favorite ambient light source--a window with a curtain.

I've done some postprocessing, though. I enhanced the black point a little, and touched the clarity and contrast sliders in Lightroom.

This picture is a high contrast night shot of the restored Santa Fe Depot in Gainesville, TX The darkened end of the building is a museum. Bright light flows from the section still used as a working depot for the Ft. Worth to Oklahoma City Amtrak line.
