There is nothing more ordinary than a pick-up in Texas!

Maybe I'm going stir-crazy after all this Christmas holiday but I saw "Jaws" when the underside of our iron caught my eye from a funny angle.
A bit of jiggery-pokery later and I ended up with this shot.
The iron is lit from the right by an off-camera, red-gelled (actually a red cellophane Quality Street wrapper) Canon 430 EX II camera right with a piece of white card camera-left to reflect light onto the shadow side. If I had another strobe I'd have lit the background in a similar way with a blue gel but as I don't have another, I created a blue gradient on my PC and displayed it full-screen behind the iron.

Daily Shoot - Make an interesting photograph of something mundane and ordinary today.
When I want a fresh look at something ordinary, I view it through my macro lens. This is the tiny crocus that sits on my kitchen window sill, set against the backdrop of my snow-covered yard. We had a hint of sunshine for a few minutes this morning that gave a nice yellow glow to the plant. I used my in-camera flash to fill the foreground. Since I wanted to concentrate more on line than detail I shot wide open at f/2.8

...Life-changing knowledge does typically require advanced learning techniques. In fact, it’s been said that the average adult only uses 10% of his/her brain. Imagine what we may be capable of with more advanced learning techniques....
Still appreciating this blog post written in February 2008: Hacking Knowledge: 77 Ways to Learn Faster, Deeper, and Better pkab.wordpress.com/2008/02/06/77-cara-belajar-cepat-dalam... - the list of 77 advice for learning better includes:
- Eat breakfast
- Eat a light lunch
- Learn to reduce depression [Adding to this: Learn to recognize your personal impact on how people around you feel - everywhere, for instance on a web course or other virtual settings]
- Shape your sleeping habits
- Take breaks
- Take walks
- Change your focus
- Put a lot of effort in learning to visualize whatever you do
- Stimulate ideas
- Get relaxed by laughing more
- Use a pen or pencil
- Put a lot of effort in learning to put self-motivating techniques into practice
- Role play
- Tell stories
- Persist
If choosing only one - it's this: Cross-pollinate your interests. Neurons that connect to existing neurons give you new perspectives and abilities to use additional knowledge in new ways.
It all begins from very mundane things. As a practical example - this kitchen stuff today helped me to find a practical explanation for why neurons and understanding more of connections through neuroscience is - what comes to leaning - a very mundane matter.
The Daily Shoot assignment for 2011/01/05:

A bit late, took this one around 11:45pm yesterday and then fell asleep before uploading. Just a quick shot, poor toothbrush looks kinda dead.

Took this during a sunset walk today.
January 5, 2011. I made this picture when I had to go to an appointment for work. The company I was visiting was located at a part of the city of Utrecht where the University can be found. So this campus area is filled with modern architecture and interesting buildings.
I had to take some pictures of these stairs, just because of the way they are lit.
I think this makes a good post for The Daily Shoot group. Today's assignment was: "Make an interesting photograph of something mundane and ordinary today" (www.dailyshoot.com).
BTW: the title of this picture comes from Alice in Wonderland, chapter 1: Down the Rabbit Hole:
"`Well!' thought Alice to herself, `after such a fall as this, I shall think nothing of tumbling down stairs! How brave they'll all think me at home! Why, I wouldn't say anything about it, even if I fell off the top of the house!'"
Cutlery waiting patiently for lunch. Taken with iPhone 3GS.
Encountered on a sidewalk table of a restaurant in Gouger Street, Adelaide.
Considered this for Daily Shoot: "Make an interesting photograph of something mundane and ordinary today", but decided to go with Soup Spoon instead.

(boxspring=mundane; its position=not ordinary)
so last night when i settled back into bed, a bit of the bed settled. this is my beloved mid 19th century oak bedstead. it has been impossible to find a boxspring that would fit it, since today's mattresses and foundations are made with lots of Xtra padding. i was thrilled when i found an inexpensive one and we wedged it in, with the plastic still on it. the slats had been holding it up but one by one they have shifted and last night was the final shift... sadly, it appears that the footboard got blown out by the boxspring's new position, semi-on-the-floor. (see note above).............now the question is just *how* am i gonna get it out/up??
AND **no** comments from the peanut gallery about how i should not be eating the props after i take 'candi kane' pictures or conjecture on holiday poundage i may have added-- i am in a fragile state here!!!!

update in september........... i seem to have inherited my DD's queen sized bed so this beloved frame is in the garage. i can't quite get myself to donate it (it fixed up easily, btb) nor can i figure out how to modify it to fit the Q mattress and boxspring. i may deconstruct the headboard and hang it on the wall as a free floating headboard.

Bright tines, dark handle. The first in a flatware series, here's the spoon and knife.
Flash bounced off white paper dividers directly over the subject; direct reflection from the fork, diffuse from the paper.

Not sure how interesting it is - but this handle leads to interesting places.

I worried a lot about this assignment, thinking that I'm far more likely to make a mundane photo of something interesting.

Looking for some change, I found this 1 Pfenning coin (Deutsche Mark subunit). It has the same size as the 1 euro cent and it can fool the vending machines.

The pink color comes from minor elements other than sodium and chlorine. Iron seems to be one of the major constituents beyond NaCl. Apparently it is mined in Pakistan from the foothills of the Himalayas. Fun stuff: www.surlatable.com/product/id/150805.do?affsrcid=Aff0001&... ...but a bit clunky to actually use.
Today's Daily Shoot (#ds416) was to, "Make an interesting photograph of something mundane and ordinary today." I figured a few random kitchen elements might do the trick. However, as soon as I stepped in there, I gravitated toward two new items from Christmas. Pink salt and a monster cutting board. In putting the two together it seems that it came out a bit more intriguing than I had hoped for.
In other news, I sure wish Flickr would allow shortened URL's in these text boxes...

I had been waiting for an assignment where I could photograph Pegg's toilet room. Small, narrow, bright red light, cool Japanese sink on top of cistern, what's not to love? Photo is (nearly) postprod-less.

Might not be interesting, certainly not art, just recording the mundane mess that is my desk.
I find black and white and weird angels can make the mundane and ordinary seem interesting.
My digital photography professor in college wanted us to shoot all in color and then make our photos black and white on the computer. I feel shooting only in color defeats the fun and challenge of black and white photography. However, if there is something really interesting, I will shoot in color before black and white. The trouble is remembering to switch back to color.

These juggling balls sit on a dresser in my room. I see them every day but never really notice them so I thought I'd try to make them a bit more interesting.

Noticed this seed pod on a bus seat on the way to the train station this morning. I like the way you can see through the gap in the metal seat slats to the rocky concrete below #ds416
