Daily Shoot #ds401 - It's the solstice. Make a photo that captures the day for you wherever you are.

This is one of those accidental shots, you know the one when you are crouching on an uneven surface, trying to focus, starting to loose your balance, accidently push the shutter button,

The Daily Shoot : "It's the solstice. Make a photo that captures the day for you wherever you are".

For me, the winter solstice means Christmas spirit, lights, shops, presents, crowed markets, etc...

Christmas is coming, very soon!

This is a shot I made for a friend who asked me if I could make a picture like that. I hope she'll like it... :)

PS: 10 minutes before, I had a bright full moon peeking throught the clouds...by the time I got home, grabbed the camera and came out again, somehow all the clouds were the moon was. Lucky me. :S

Cold, grey, air heavy with the moisture that will fall as snow - welcome to winter! We've already broken snowfall records and winter is only hours old. I wonder if the waterfowl that are still here are regretting their decision to hang around.

This shot was taken with my Canon 300mm f/4 wide open. It delivers sharp detail in the foreground and lovely soft backgrounds.

I had no idea what to shoot for today's theme. And then the power went out. How fitting, for the darkest day of the year. We had only enough time to light some candles and enjoy a glass of wine before, thirty minutes later, power returned. It's almost disappointing.

Just the moon, shot with my 200mm lens 2x extender.

A friend brought me a Jizo from Japan. There are no inappropriate days to enjoy an image of the protector of children perched on the corner of the desk, but it seems especially apt on the solstice. (I hope he protects child-like adults as well as children - I was tired today from staying up way too late in order to watch the eclipse last night.)

Taken around 4.30pm. I like the shortest day because it means the days are finally going to start getting longer again! Couldn't think of anything to do with the solstice so i did this instead. Created from 3 bracketed RAWs, +2, 0 and -2 EV. Tone mapped with Luminance and tidied up with Gimp

"A Purpose Driven Life’s 5 step Process To a Goals Attainment

1. Form a clear mental image of the outcome in its entirety. Not in your imagination, but a vivid visualization. The difference is that in visualization in your heart you also feel that it is possible.

2. Induce some positive pressure on yourself. You can accomplish this through a public pledge with the people who you value in your life.

3. Define your financial, social, spiritual goals. Use an idea book and picture book to keep you inspired and motivated. Examine your relationship to time.

4. Create an empowering habit designed to attain your goals. Make sure you bring complete awareness into it, don’t let it become a mechanical action. Little consistent actions will yield huge results.

5. Enjoy the process and keep growing. This life is an amazing adventure; make sure you learn from the ride in both the ups and downs."

A rainy day in Arizona is what we call "an outbreak of weather". It is both a time for juniper berries and rain drops to just hang around together.

Our backyard rink is in great condition after some backbreaking shoveling of slush over the weekend. Getting on the rink before Christmas is always a bonus.

What better way to welcome the winter solstice than by skating and shooting pucks in your own backyard. Next week our son has some college friends that will be coming to hang out and play some hockey.

Coincided with Winter Solstice -- a first in 300+ years. (Story here.)

This picture almost didn't happen because of overcast skies. Thankfully, just as I was about to get back home after having given up, it cleared up, so I doubled back for a shot or two.

The shortest day of the year. The sun rose today at 9,37 and set at 15.20, which gave us only 5 hr 43 mins of daylight. On a cloudy day, though, it seems even less than that!

Interesting to compare to the opposite in summer:

Just having some fun with the lighting gear. Also just trying to get acclimated to the old body. It's hard to remember how I used to do things, since I got so used to my current body. It's nice to be able to spend a day off just messing around with the camera.

My friend Tom got me thinking about what to shoot for today’s assignment. Since we are on the last stretch of 2010 and 2011 is just around the corner, why not try to capture that especially since the new year has been on my mind! Enjoy the remaining days of 2010 all!

It's been a busy day today. I worked all day then my wife and I caught a flight back to the east coast. I saw this kid hanging on luggage bag that their parent was pulling. I could relate to the kid. Crazy day....just felt like I was hanging on throughout the day. Uploaded the photo on my flight. I uploaded a lower resolution version of this photo to save time uploading on the plane.

I stopped at a local park on the way home from work as I was noticing as I was driving that the sky was beautiful. Hints of orange sunset sneaking in between cold blue clouds with a bit of wind to top it all off. If I can't have snow where I am to represent the solstice, this cold winter scene works for me.
