This assignment was hard. Not because I couldn't come up with an idea, but because everything about the way I live is a pretty decent illustration of freedom. How does one illustrate a concept when she has never truly experienced anything but that concept? In the end, I decided that knowledge and the freedom to pursue it was pretty important. In constructing the image (destroying my living room in the process!) I started inserting other concepts of freedom, or lack of freedom, through the placement of titles. Not every title has a meaning - and many that did have meaning ended up out of frame as I composed the image - but it was a fun exercise.

two ideas came spontaneously up:
1. reading the newspaper about the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and trying to shoot a photograph about her new freedom. I was not really successful.
2. finishing the book about a muslim woman fighting for her freedom. ArabQueen: www.amazon.de/ArabQueen-Geschmack-G%C3%BCner-Yasemin-Balc...

the first thing that popped into my head was the *freedom* of childhood and, of course, a slinky, frisbee, or hula hoop were all toys i could have chosen. no grandkids but i did find a colorful slinky that my sister gave me when i retired.
(i am also celebrating the fact that i can do lots and lots of color this week-- another form of freedom :):)

"Free as a bird"...my first vision was to photograph one of the bald eagles that has been hanging around the neighborhood for an additional interpretation of free, but they've been hiding as of late. The perspective in flight is so inspirational and uplifting - to drink in such a wide vista and be free of the hounding realities of daily life. Though that is definitely romanticized, the 'freedom' to fly is symbolic of unconstrained and unhampered ideas and actions.
The connection to the Beatles reuniting after John Lennon's death to finish the lyrics and arrangements of his earlier composition, Free as a Bird, was serendipitous, though meaningful. 4th Ave N & Gulf of Mexico, Naples, FL

The Cambaceres Girl
The story goes something like this. I'm paraphrasing the tour guide in the cemetery.
On her nineteenth birthday, Rufina Cambaceres learns through the confession of a friend that the man she was in love with was her mother's secret lover. Broken-hearted, she passed away that very night while she was getting ready to go to the theatre in Buenos Aires, Argentina circa 1930.
Some 45 days after her burial, her grandmother arrives from Europe and orders to open the tomb, perhaps just to see her one last time, or perhaps because she had a bad presentiment. To their horror, they discover the girl had had a premature burial.
The statue in this picture was then built in her honour. Her hand eternally touching the door handle that could have set her free.

The 1st thing that popped into my head was "extra free" but i couldn't find anything with any extra free so i "faked" it using FREE software! This is the first time i have ever tried anything like this, so it's a bit rubbish. It needs a lot more work done to it, but it's late and i'm tired so this will have to do.

Umair Hague just tweeted: ethical capital and institutional innovation. these are 21st century economics--not deficits etc. www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/singer68/English
I absolutely love the terms 'ethical capital' and 'institutional innovation' - a chain like this:
Personal transformation => stopping professional protectionism => institutional innovation => ethical competence => social consciousness => connective, caring microcommunities as foundation of 21st century sustainability

The first thing that popped in my head was my dog, Gertie, running free in the woods the other day and taking off after a deer! But no, I wasn't going to try and recreate that scene. My second thought was a leaf falling from a tree. I tried that but being a calm day the falling leaves were few and far between. I took a shot that I thought I could use even though the leaf was really still attached to the tree. So I ended up with this shot. As soon as I saw it I knew I wanted to use it. The open seed pod and the blurriness of the background say "free" to me.

It was such a beautiful day out, that the roommate suggested I capture the pretty blue skies somehow. She eventually came up with the idea for today's shot. Shooting in the midday sun is pretty harsh so I brought up all this lighting gear to balance against the hard ambient light. However, in the end of the day all it took was the natural scrim of the umbrella and a gold reflector as a fill light.
