The 315th @dailyshoot assignment was about walls and fences. This rusty fence and the flower it supports separate an industrial backyard from a lovely farm landscape near the Swiss-German border north of Basel. It looks like nature is slowly taking over this place.

I was in a park doing a family photo shoot today, so snapped this before they arrived. There is a companion photo in my stream. I personally think you have to see both to appreciate one!

I love the wrought iron fence and turnstyle gate here. Both iron and granit define the borders of this ancient cemetery in Portsmouth, NH.

Located on the point of land just before the Pierce Island Bridge, Point of Graves Burial Ground is home to many prominent figures in our city's history, such as the Wentworth family, the Vaughan family, The Rogers, and the Lears.
The graveyard was first recognized as a burial-ground when in 1671 Captain John Pickering 2d agreed the town should "have full liberty to enclose about half an acre upon the neck of land on which he liveth, where the people have been wont to be buried, which land shall be impropriated forever unto the use of a burying place."
The earliest readable gravestone in this burial-ground is dated at 1684 and marks the resting place of John Hoddy. An old graveyard, Point of Graves Burial- Ground is host to a number of strange tales. Many a visitor to the old cemetery has stated that footfalls have been heard following closely behind, and a feeling of some unearthly presence has also been imminent.
The Vaughan tomb, which lies at the severe west of the small cemetery, is the home of many strange occurrences. While the tomb may look peaceful to the naked eye, strange lights and an odd glow have shown up on the film with which the tomb was photographed. While no explanation has been given, could it be the presence of the long-departed still with us?

There are many styles of cedar snake fence in this area, this fence is particularly robust in its construction.

We were at Belle Grove Plantation today for the National Sheepdog Finals. The main building was finished in 1797 and has beautiful limestone walls.
The covenant in the subdivision is no fences. We have 8 acres - really no need for them - but with a city dog that moved to the semi-rural area, we need something to keep him in. This metal fabric fence was put up so that Jack can go out without a collar, run chain etc. For the most part it is transparent. Since we are built into a hill and the lot is so large - no neighbors can see the fence. Our guess is the fence rule was put in so that there would not be lot line fences. Not sure who would want to pay or care for a fence that long as it is, but there must have been fear when the area was established.
While not great to look at from others point of view - this is the most beautiful fence for us as Jack just goes out the door and has his space. We don't have to untangle him and everyone is happy.

watched the care with which this wall was built in front of a modest cape down by the train station. pride in workmanship is a wonderful thing :)

I don't get here very often. It's the far corner of our property in the woods, and it has to be very dry or very frozen to cross the wet areas in the forest. It's been dry, so I was able to walk up here and shoot this old rock wall that is on one of the property lines. I assume it was a fence line in an open area at one point in the past, but now the trees have reclaimed it, and it was a bit of a surprise when I first stumbled over it back when we bought the land.

This old fence separates somebody's yard and garden from the main road. I liked its old weathered look, and the fact that it's almost overgrown with bushes.

I've been creating a set of wire fences throughout the spring and summer. This daily shoot assignment seemed the perfect occasion to add to the collection. As I sat in my car at the side of the road, scanning the fence for interesting sections, I was totally shocked to see a pair of eyes looking back!

I've always found it intriguing how these simple and incomplete barriers can do so well to keep people organized into two discrete lines. I also like shiny metal things, the specular highlights are always fun to play with.

My guess is that the pictured wall is about six or seven feet tall. It's always fun to watch people to struggle up and down that wall when they want to take a shortcut instead of walking a couple hundred feet around it.

Love the contrast softness of the fuzzy grass with the harshness of barbed wire....processed it to black and white, and it really seemed to highlight the contrast.
