ok, so i kind of did this to remember it and clarify it for myself. the pennies on the grid divide the photo in thirds horizontally and vertically. the quarter is at one power point, the dime at another, and the nickel at a third. what isn't obvious is that i put a canadian penny at the last power point.
think it is OBVIOUS enough? ~ggg~

Millennium Park has been off limits to Collingwood residents for the past week as the park was readied for last weekend's Wakestock event, and then cleaned up from the 'festivities'. It was re-opened this morning and quickly filled up with people eager to enjoy the once more peaceful green space.
My boy was looking so cute today so I asked him if I could take his picture. I also used today's daily shoot assignment as my inspiration for framing, using the rule of thirds.

Today during my prep period I visited the AP photo lab, which brought back a ton of memories. For example, when I went through the door into the dark room it smelled like the chemicals in a darkroom. I hung out with the kids, watched them dodge and burn, reviewed some negatives for an art show, and also set up a mini studio with a student. He and I made several images including this one I shot on smoked plexiglass above black butcher paper. We had a soft box flash and a diffused light source. Very fun times. I will visit again soon to do more studio work, which I have very little experience with.

Had trouble choosing this photo for my dailyshoot today. Was afraid it would look like I didn't understand the rule of thirds and just went with the number 3. But I think it fits the rule of thirds too.

PS: I was sure I was going to shoot a sunset today, but got lucky when my brother called me over to go out with him and my nephew to the park during sunset. :)
By the time we got to the park, I calculated we had three minutes to take the shot I had in mind using the 'rule of thirds', so I had to trick him to throw stones while I took the photos. After a minute and a half he was already tired of throwing rocks, and wanted to be the photographer. :D
On post production minor adjustments to darks (-1) and lights (-2). The rest is straight aout of camera.

My second attempt at the rule of thirds using my cell phone camera. Not a great example but I do like having just part of the bike in the picture. It captures my eye and then I take in rest of the photo.
I much prefer taking pictures with my DSLR! I have guidelines visible on my camera to remind me to keep this rule in mind and mainly to help me keep the horizon line straight.

I took this shot at the golf course today with my iphone and when I got home discovered that a bit of cropping fit the daily shoot challenge. What a lovely day it was on the course today.

Ok, so it's not spot on but for some reason Nikon took it upon themselves to make the optional grid in the D70 viewfinder 4x4!? Which makes trying to obviously line things up with intersections and stuff just as tricky as having no grid at all.
This is the same subject as yesterday's DS upload after a few more hours of rain and a persistent drip near the nose that's managed to erode a hole :)

As I'm useless at getting up, I only had half an hour to get out, take a photo, edit it and upload it. Not a great photo but at least it contains the rule of thirds twice (almost thrice).
