Todays challenge for the daily shoot was Make a photograph that emphasizes a change in texture: smooth/rough, soft/hard, shiny/dull, etc.
I struggled with this challenge, took many shots, but rejected most of them, but think this one most fit the assignment

Daily Shoot - Make a photograph that emphasizes a change in texture: smooth/rough, soft/hard, shiny/dull, etc.
I keep being pulled to fences this summer (see here and here)! People are actually starting to ask me what I'm doing when they see me stopped along the side of the road. I'm sure some of them think I'm picking up beer bottles :-).
As what's growing behind the fences and the angle of the sun change over the season, the mood shifts. I plan to keep adding more shots until I have a whole collection. I'm even thinking now that winter ones will be great too.

The pavement in the parking lot here has a very grainy texture, but the reflection of Canada Place was to nice to pass up :-)

Today is the official day of my boy's birth. We had a small celebration with just the family. Mom made some very tasty CHOCOLATE cupcakes. I think my son's first word was chookuulaat.

While we were flying somewhere over Georgia, I was blessed with an amazing window seat view of some spectacular cloud formations. Seeing the contrast between the smooth rigidity of the plane's wing and the ephemeral softness of the clouds immediately brought to mind today's Daily Shoot assignment.
I would have rather not had the speckly, water stained airplane window obscuring the view, but I couldn't get the flight attendant to spot me as I climbed out on the wing...

"Make a photograph that emphasizes a change in texture: smooth/rough, soft/hard, shiny/dull, etc." I'm not sure why I found this so compelling, but I did. Shiny & Matte? Rough & Smooth?...not sure if it's obvious enough for the theme, but it's the shot I'm using today!

I like how the line emphasizes a nearly invisible change of texture, that is very real none the less (dry vs wet).

Somehow, I anticipated today's assignment with this image. Not shot today, but the processing is new... part of my recent obsession with variations on solarization.

Not that I'm not thankful for the quick thunderstorms. We were close to 100 today. But less than an hour later, the pavement is almost dry, and now its terribly humid.
My wife is out of town at a conference for a few days... so I'm stuck by myself. I might try a couple new things, playing with lighting.

Soft grass will just grow almost anywhere, even on a hard, rough rock wall!

Part of the office hallway has older and worn carpet while a small section is newer and darker carpet.

Found this interesting contrast in my little forest on a walk at sunset. I was struck by how the light from the flash was reflecting in the almost dead leaf and berries, and absorbed by the dead leaf below. I should have noted exactly where this was; I'd love to take a shot of it in natural light.

Somehow, I anticipated today's assignment with this image. Not shot today, but the processing is new... part of my recent obsession with variations on solarization.
This is second choice, only because the jewel tones don't entirely mesh with the contrasting texture theme. I can't choose; or perhaps I refuse to.

Wanted to do an outdoor shot today, and this was one of the few transitions I could think of that wasn't dull in colour. Wanted to get the two different kinds of bark on a birch tree, but I didn't find any tree large enough to have that so this difference around a damage had to do.

PS: second night shooting my dinner...and worn out. Used a tupperware with a green lid, put the flash inside pointing down to bounce asginst the white table and the three eggs. Not spectacular, but goes with the assignment: porous outside vs smooth inside.

The clouds above the Bay of Quinte had me enthralled today.
I had noticed the billowing clouds in town, and then really appreciated their almost-reflection in the uncharacteristic smoothness of the water as I was crossing the Norris Whitney Bridge. The view was so striking that I retraced my route back across the bridge and parked to take some pictures.
But somehow, without the perspective offered from the top of the bridge, the contrast was missing. So I again drove south over the bridge, parked, and then hiked back up the bridge to the apex.
It is from this vantage that I took this PANO shot with the iPhone.
