The Daily Shoot #229: Refresh from the summer heat today. Make a photo of water in motion. Freeze it or let it blur!
Topic: Refresh from the summer heat today. Make a photo of water in motion. Freeze it or let it blur!
I can't say I'm satisfied with this one. It's much more difficult than I thought. I will have to revisit this shot another time, when it will not be that late in the evening.
Strobist info: SB900 zoomed to 200mm, manual power 1/4th, shot through a sheet of paper, camera left. Triggered by the commander unit built-in in the camera.
Postprocessing: increased saturation of orange color a little.
This shot is taken with 1/800th of a second shutter speed. This, combined with the small distance between the light source and the subject, makes the light fall off very rapidly. Yet, there is some unwanted reflection on the right side of the wine glass. And, the stream of ice tea is not really visible above the glass :(

The water was running up the windows, waiting here on the tarmac ar San Antonio airport hoping to get to Houston. I had lots of time to watch the rain.
Hurricane Alex was spinning havoc on the air space; our 1:52PM flight did not life off until after 4:30pm, and it was only a stroke of luck in Houston I made my connection to Phoenix when they re-opened the door to the plane.

I was "en route": a wonderful summer evening - Heurigen in Wien
This weekend found us spending time with my family in the Klamath Basin of Southern Oregon. It's the place I was born and raised and I don't make the drive over the mountain to visit it nearly enough.
Water is an interesting issue in the Klamath Basin in the summer time. A few years ago there was a major national news story when water was shut off for the farmers because of an endangered sucker fish in Klamath Lake. It caused a tremendous outcry among the citizens of the Basin and many angry protests on both sides of the concern.
During our visit, the town of Merrill - where my two sisters live and teach and just a few miles from my parents' and brother's houses - was without potable water because irrigation had lowered the level below the pump's minimum and the whole system broke down.
Things returned to normal before we headed back over the hill to the Rogue Valley, but it was a rather difficult and frustrating time for the people of Merrill.
This photo was taken in my mom and dad's field, just across Buesing Road from the house where I grew up.

PS: Even though I shot at 1/400 and used an off camera flash, I couldn't freeze the water.
On postproduction only applied a 'summer' type filter to make it look very warm. :)
The home of my parents, the Philippines, is economically a poor country, but the richness of the country lies in its strong family ties and cultural heritage. The newly sworn in Philippines President Benigno Aquino has vowed to lift his nation out of poverty and wipe out crippling corruption.
While walking around Iloilo City Old Market I came across a mother and her child asking for some change. I talked with her for a moment, but she spoke very little English. I then gave her the remaining peso coins I had in my pocket.
I took this photograph with my camera slung around my hip as I approached her. I didn't want to raise my camera to look through the view finder as I wanted to capture that "decisive moment."
It was only after I viewed this photograph when I returned to the United States did I notice the juxtaposition between the sign advertising "eat all you can" and the kind woman seeking alms.
May God bless the Philippines!

We went out to the 4th of July Celebration the day this challenge was posted. No moving water to be found. Yesterday, we went to a local park with a huge pond...which was like glass. I gave up this morning and went with this. You know this means that today there will be a mob of kids playing in a fire hydrant or something!

I live on the shores of Nottawasaga/Georgian Bay, a body of water known for its violence. Not so today! The bay is perfectly calm on this gorgeous summer day. Only the sparkling light signals the gentle current beneath the surface in one of the channels in Sunset Point Park. I used my circular polarizing filter to block out some of the reflection, give me a longer exposure, and deepen the colour palette.

My first cop-out for the daily shoot. I took this last weekend, but I just didn't come up with anything nearly as nice today, so I decided to use it.

One of my personal goals for my project 365 was to learn to take photos in public places regardless if I get strange looks from people for doing so or not. I think I can check that of my list now:
Today (tonight actually) I was in the the middle of a square crouching in the stream of a fountain putting my tripod up for this shot. This while people walked by and sat all around. Not a very normal behaviour in a very public place.

This photo started its life as an NRW raw file, then converted to DNG (as all my raw files are), desaturated, and had the clarity turned down to -100. A 1 cm black frame was added in PSE8.

Today we drove through the Four Corners area and Georgia O’Keefe Country. Lots of beautiful countryside that brought back great memories to my first years of teaching on the Navajo Nation. We stopped at the Four Corners Monument hoping to get photos of us standing in 4 states at once, but it under construction. We still walked around and Erik had a piece of Navajo Fry Bread. We oohed and ahhed at the thunderstorms across the desert. Tonight we are staying at a funky little court style hotel that looks like it is from the 40s. We have already eaten some of the wonderful New Mexican food that we crave between visits.

I shot over 70 photos and only kept around 20 of them. This one is my favourite and was made dropping an ice cube. I should have used some kind of solid colour backdrop, but unfortunately didn't have anything handy.

This was not at all the image I had in mind when I set out this morning, but it's early July, a very dry time for an area that's usually much more wet, with faster moving rivers and all.
I still want to shoot the cliche I had in my head, but this and several other images were what I found instead. I've been trying to find a location for a very long shutter shot of either tide or turbulent rapids for a few months, but not enough planning to do something like a trip dedicated to the project itself.
This and most other shots today were shot from a public access fishing pier that extends into the Walkill River, near New Paltz.

Friday's daily shoot assignment got me looking over some old waterfalls pictures I took, and I came across this old one. When I was making the picture, I was struck by the contrast of this gentleman's red shirt against the bland colours of the rocks and water, so in post-processing, I decided to accentuate it by desaturating everything except the photographer. I think the effect worked rather well, don't you?
I'm glad the photographer stayed rather still, because the exposure was for a full second. I'm also glad I had a tripod... :)

Daily Shoot: Refresh from the summer heat today. Make a photo of water in motion. Freeze it or let it blur!
A good day to look for some water as it was really hot today. Very still, too, so not much motion anywhere. Only found this little stream going downhill a little, and making a happy, rippling sound. I tried different settings, and in the end preferred this one, with a high shutter speed to freeze the water. At least to me, the water looks more refreshing here than in this other picture with a slow shutter speed.

This caught my eye because it was completely still naturally.
Topic: Find a sign in front of a vista that tells a story. (Don't walk on the grass.) Make a photograph and post it.
I wanted a universal sign that tells a story that's easily understood no matter what language you read (or don't read yet, for that matter).
Apparently, dog owners don't appreciate this person's efforts of keeping, excuse my language, dog turds off his sidewalk.

This was fun because my dad has a creek running through their backyard. I shot this holding my very expensive camera down off a footbridge over his creek. This is up close and I tried it in black and white and love this shot.
