2010 - Day 164. June 13, 2010.

Daily Shoot - Challenge: Invent your own filter! Shoot through something translucent or transparent. Make a photo with a unique look.

It rained all night, so everything in the garden was covered in tiny drops of water. I got hung up on the 'shoot through something translucent or transparent' part of the challenge and didn't really think about the 'invent your own filter' part. I wanted to shoot the garden through the drops. That I accomplished, but what I've really created is a lens, not a filter. In any event, I'm very happy with the shot. For once it was still enough to use my macro lens outdoors and I was able to capture many tiny landscapes.

I used the lid of a GLAD storage container for the filter.

PS: Well, I had two experiments for today: 1. a custom bokeh filter with the shape of a triangle, and 2. taping two strips of color cellophane to the lens.

First attempt with the bokeh filter was a total disaster. The only thing I could get was a complete black frame, and in the middle the triangle shape, but no triangles whatsoever on the bokeh lights. Why? I don't know. The DIY page instructions were way too simple, and I belive a little more calculations should be performed for the correct shape size based on the distance of the filter to the lens. I'll do more tests...

Second attempt were the color cellophane strips. By placing them over a 67mm diameter Cokin filter ring, and screwing the ring to the lens diagonally I was able to get a two tone image. Since what I was out and about for today was bokeh, I looked for an interesting pattern. Oh well, this is all I could get. :) The stripes on the bokeh are from the bad quality of the cellophane, but it sure adds some texture to the photo.

This was a job for my diy lensbaby.

Topic: Challenge: Invent your own filter! Shoot through something translucent or transparent. Make a photo with a unique look.

I wanted to go with distinct, yet subtle, similar to Lensbaby, or a lens flawed with soft focus. I choose a wine glass that provides almost no distortion in the center, yet influences the focus and geometry on the sides. The subject is one of a Hortensia my wife has in our back garden.

BTW, did you know you can influence its flowers' color by controlling acidity of the soil? Really! That simple.

Postprocessing: I decreased luminance of green, yellow and aqua a little to make the background a bit darker, and adjusted the black point by +10.

Will work OK I think on desktops, too.

This is a remix of www.flickr.com/photos/doug88888/4140394881/ by doug88888 shot on my computer screen through the bottom of a heavy glass vase. I really loved the blocks of vibrant colour in doug88888's photo and liked the distortion the glass vase provided.

I took a window screen cut out and mounted it on a boom. I then asked my parents to sit closely behind the screen while I triggered a speedlight 27 degrees off to the left.

I tried a bunch of things directly on the lens as a filter and didn't like any of them. This isn't quite what the challenge asked for, but I liked the end effect with the shadows on the bench under the ball.

Once again I used my bike light as a light source. It seems to be used for that as much as night riding lately.

A scene through a glass plate - the Mikkeli Cathedral. I discovered the idea for today's @dailyshoot by design-spotting at my Mom's. The Mikkeli Cathedral is the church where my Mom had her first Lutheran communion. A link to a picture of the catheral @ wikipedia here

The idea of "my own filter" - or rather how to get rid of it - is very actual to me. That's what I've understood to be one core content of massive open online courses like #CCK, #edfuture, #CritLit... - Become aware of what causes your current filtering of the world --> begin to recognize how filters used by other people differ from yours --> find common spots, recreate understanding --> help your community and other communities to grow toward less limiting filtering - both on individual and collective level...

A piece of plastic borrowed from a desk lamp (a decorative lamp made to look like fish swimming). Subject is the inside of a toolbox (needed to dismantle the lamp), liked how colourful it was.

See setup shot below for an idea what the filter actually look like. Shot through the middle of the plastic tube.

I went on a bicycle ride first thing this morning with my camera strapped to my back and today's challenge rolling around in my mind.

Rounding my nearly final corner, my eye was caught by the LTM rock crusher site. I took off my bike helmet and shot the photo through the vents in the top. More of a natural way to create a vignette than truly a filter, but it was the product of lovely ride and some last minute improvisation.

There is too much cynicism in the world. Why not, every once in a while, become an innocent romantic, and see the world through rosy glasses? Any imperfections are neatly hidden in the pink haze.

I used a piece of my daughter's sheer pink dress material over the lens, and postprocessed with a bit of 'pink matte' effect from Picnik.

In Florida in the summer time you need to take your camera outside for at least 10 or 15 minutes before you try and take a picture otherwise you will be shooting thru a fog of condensation.

Didn't get round to taking a picture today, so I dug through my library and found this picture I took in 2008. The Panda was behind glass/perspex and I was using my old Sony Cybershot. Of all the pictures I took that day this was the clearest. The camera insisted on focusing on the glass rather than the Panda (no manual focus), if you look carefully you can almost see the subtle reflection ... however what is not subtle is the the haze like effect shooting through the dirty glass gives this picture.
