This is a Plane made out of a six pack of Sunkist soda cans. It belongs to my son...His Uncle Brent made it for him a few years back. It looks so much better than the photo. The propeller rotates and so do the wheels....When I first saw it, I was amazed....it's really cool!
Taken in 1962
Ex-South Eastern Railway O1 class 0-6-0 31065 in the rain at Ashford shed, in 1962, after withdrawal.. This loco had been operating for many years on the Kent and East Sussex line, which finally closed down in 1961.
The loco is next to an old breakdown crane – possibly DS208, dating from 1903..
31065 had entered service in 1896 with a domeless boiler and smaller round-topped cab, designed by J Stirling, and was then rebuilt as seen here by Wainwright in 1908, with a similar boiler and cab to a C Class..
It was withdrawn by BR in 1961, and was very nearly cut up for scrap, with the coupling rods actually being chopped, but this was halted, and the loco was purchased privately at scrap value. It was the last surviving ex-SER loco in service.
It had its coupling rods restored, and ended up at the ill-fated Ashford Steam Centre, where it was in operation for a time, and then was dismantled for complete overhaul, but ended up in pieces, with some components stored many miles from the rest of the loco.. Many years later, the various parts were moved to the Bluebell Railway, and the restoration was finally completed in 1999.
After its must recent overhaul in 2017, the loco was purchased from the owners by the Bluebell Railway, and today (2024) it is in operation on that line..
Restored from an under-exposed grainy purple-colour-shifted original..

I'm not sure everybody does, but turning a few phone books into a step ladder is something common over here. Can't wait to get next year's so I 'll get another two steps high!

This old Ford has found a new use as a flower bed at the entrance to the Village @ Blue Mountain. The light was pretty harsh by the time I took this shot, so I did some selective processing to lighten shadows and play up on the rusted, worn patina.

I went through the house, and for the life of me, I could not find a single thing that I'm using for a purpose that's obviously other than intended. So, I decided to find something that I'm using for a decorative purpose, even though normally it's thrown away. Wine bottle corks. Do I reduce the waste? Do I reuse these? I'm certainly not recycling these, they're too pretty in a jar.
Shooting info: shot in manual mode; aperture selected to have the whole subject in focus (f/6.3); shutter speed selected to remove all traces of available light from the scene (1/500th of a second, these flashes can do high speed sync).
Strobist info: one SB900 behind the subject, standing in its original holder, pointing some 30deg upward. Zoomed to 200mm, manual power 1/64 (too much!). One SB800 camera left a little above the subject, zoomed to 105mm, manual power of 1/16 through a homemade snoot made from plastic straws (these are definitely used for a purpose other than originally meant, but I already made a shot of these). Both flashes triggered by the camera built-in trigger that does not contribute to the light scene.
Postprocessing: the raw file has been tweaked because of the issue with the "hair light" being too bright. I adjusted the white point considerably down, and increased the recovery to the middle of the scale. Luckily I shot raw...

This is my favorite bag, shopper for everyday and for weekendtrips. It was part of an art project of Klaus Littmann www.klauslittmann.com/projekte/frontside-basel-2001. After the exhibition I bought this bag made from the material in Beyeler Museum in Basle www.beyeler.com/index.html. The whole bag: www.flickr.com/photos/rvoegtli/4690841587/

My son has been attending an after school Mad Science club. Along with the experiments they do there, the kids receive cards with more experiments to do at home. This one involved water, oil, salt, and food colouring shaken together in a jar.

This button jar was my mothers. I remember it from when I was a kid. I now have it. I don't really use it ... it just reminds me of my childhood and my mother sewing for us, I just can't part with it.
I don't have a clue what was in the jar originally. Does anyone know what McLarens is/was?

O.K. let me join the Friday night - out of inspiration - club:
the standard reuse of empty bottles as candle holders....
Standing proud and quite still in the front yard of a home along Table Rock Road, is a remarkably well-trained and rather rigid Holstein. I've heard various histories of the life of this lovely synthetic cow.
In one story, it was the official mascot and icon of a local dairy. In another, it was part of an educational display created by either a 4-H group of the University agricultural extension service.
Still another legend asserts that Bessie is a left-behind relic of a bygone visit from an uddered race of extraterrestrials that visited the Rogue River Valley in the late 1950s.
In any case, she has found a new home and role in life as a decorative statement in a rural neighborhood. Not quite the glory days she once knew, but it's still a pleasant roadside diversion.

In our garden, we usually use old empty bottles as candle holders, and even old short ends of candles. In the dark night it doesn't matter if they look a bit tatty. It's the flickering light that makes the atmosphere. Of course, this time of the year, when it doesn't really get dark at all, it's not quite the same. Trying to light the candles for this picture on a wet and windy day was quite a job.

This is probably my favorite bit of furniture in our house. Half of an OLD canoe that has been re-purposed as a shelf. Picked it up at an antique place a few years ago. I love the idea that it had been a travel method in the past, and now has more life in it as a display shelf in our house.

Reusing the 2 L milk cartons to protect the plants, also reusing the old corn stalks to deter birds and other critters. This is serious protection for, in this case, a pumpkin plant. These containers are also useful in concentrating water on the plant. By the way, if you must set a mouse trap, try putting the trap inside the milk carton. It's much less messy and less prone to accidental tripping.

Many years ago my husband picked this wheelbarrow out of a neighbor's garbage. The handles were broken so my husband fixed it up with a new set and we turned it into a planter for the front lawn, Many times the neighbor has walked by and commented on how she wished she had thought of that idea.
Getting it planted is on this weekend's list of jobs. Right now it's mainly weeds.

While refurbishing their house, my in-laws also dug up a lot of plants. They sieved through a lot of earth to get out roots and stones to be able to use it again, once they start replanting around the house. Took this in the evening with strong cloud cover.
