2010 - Day 160. June 9, 2010.

Daily Shoot - Place or find a subject floating on water today---boats, leaves, ice cubes, etc.---and make a photo.

Cloudy, rainy and windy - no beautiful reflections today for my 'floating' subject! I was tempted to pull out one of my water fowl shots from the archives, but in the spirit of trying something new, I decided to work with the conditions I had. Since this is a vintage canoe I thought I'd go for the 'aged photo' look. I like the mood of this shot and its timeless feel.

Grabbed completely the wrong lens for the lack of harbour traffic (both of the shipping and animal kind) today and the number of interesting vessels tied up. Should've taken the 35mm instead of the 105mm.

This photo was took minutes before Lion & Pork burka set another world record, they became the first pair to go `UP` the Niagara Falls in a barrel.

"Once we had managed to paddle half way up the falls,we knew we were going to make it" explained Lion (who unfortunately received a head injury from someone coming down in a barrel)

Our Canadian friend Chuck Burka stands proudly against Torontos `AWWSOME` C.N Tower.

The C.N Tower is short for `The Concrete Nipple Tower` which was named by the local villagers back in the 90`s because of its remarkable resemblance to that of a nip.

This was however, shortened to C.N last year as it was discovered that there was no likeness whatsoever to a nipple............and its not made of concrete !!

Trying to do today's DS206 Daily Create, the idea being to dress in colors that blend in to the surroundings. The shirt is the color of my kitchen cabinets , the pants are the slate floor.

Dodging much needed rain, I took this photo of a paper boat in a small pond in the garden.

Had to look up directions n how to fold the boat as it has been a while. : )

PS. First of all, thanks to Elena for the idea, and yolanda for lending me the bottle.

Now, since it's been raining all day long, I had in mind the same shot but with the drops of rain creating ripples on the surface. But it's Murphy's law, and i could only use half of the idea. :)

I cropped as a panoramic shot to focus on the subject, and also raised blacks and shadows to add a dramatic effect.

In the botanical garden near my home. I went to the "Villa Merian" to look after waterlilies. All the leaves were standing up as to say "hello".

Well there's not much water to see on the photograph (not exactly following the assignment ;-))

This assignment made me think of the science inquiries we do asking students what will float and what will sink. If you are able to get paper clips to float, you have another lesson in surface tension.

Second summer homes, or summer cottages by the sea or a lake are most Finns' dream. For some, the dream is 'a floating cottage' in the form of a boat. For others, it is an idyllic cottage with a sauna by the water, like you see on the opposite shore here. It's a place of retreat from the hustle and bustle of working life. Somewhere where you can escape to have a quiet time and recharge your batteries in the lap of nature at weekends and during your summer holiday. The archipelago is a perfect place for boating people - there are thousands of islands to stop at and explore. July is the main summer holiday month over here, and as it was not the weekend, where I went today, all the boats were moored to the jetties.

We don't own either - a boat or a cottage. We enjoy our freedom too much, often travelling during the summer. If you have a boat or a cottage, you feel tied to it, obliged to spend every free moment in it, to make the most of your investment. Luckily, we have family and friends who invite us over to their summer retreats, so we really have the best of both worlds.

Place or find a subject floating on water today---boats, leaves, ice cubes, etc.---and make a photo! This shot is one I took in my friend's garden tonight before dinner. Of anyone I know personally, his gardens are the most beautiful. He has developed almost 2 acres of his Soames Hill property with gardens, ponds, walkways, sitting areas, etc.

Not far from our house, the Bear Creek Greenway bike path starts. The path winds along the banks of the creek through the valley from Central Point all the way to Ashland. While we haven't ridden the entire length (that's a goal for this summer), we have grown quite familiar with the stretch that connects our neighborhood and the nearest Dairy Queen.

Riding along the path this afternoon, my attention was drawn to this swampy area that looked particularly mysterious and murky. I hopped off my bike and tentatively inched my way down the bank toward the mostly stagnant water. Serenaded by the territorial song of a bullfrog, I snapped several shots and considered the various maladies the local mosquitoes who swarmed around my head might be carrying.

I've been to New Orleans only once, and I realize there is probably little that truly connects the Louisiana bayou with this one in my relative backyard, but it was a very nice photographic sojourn all the same.

I had a lot of thoughts for this theme - message in a bottle, paper boats, lily pads - but I grew up in the "Freshwater Fish Capital of the World" (tee hee) which is about 20 minutes down the road. It seemed obvious so I headed there, but just wasn't happy with anything I shot today.

It's been pouring outside all day. I didn't feel like going out in the rain, so I stood by the balcony and watched the puddles form with debris floating in them.

So, technically, the lily pad flotation is assisted by tethered roots...but the reflection and slow moving koi add irresistible interest.

"Between you and every goal that you wish to achieve, there is a series of obstacles, and the bigger the goal, the bigger the obstacles. Your decision to be, have and do something out of the ordinary entails facing difficulties and challenges that are out of the ordinary as well. Sometimes your greatest asset is simply your ability to stay with it longer than anyone else."

this is what I like about the dailyshoot assignments: I knew about the ponds on campus at the office, but I didn't know about the frogs floating in it having a good time...

probably obvious: I used my microcontrast enhancer here.

Shot this in Port Hope, Ontario, at the harbour that feeds out into Lake Ontario. Wet and rainy kind of day give it a dull feeling.
