The flash: not a small amount of dough
The camera: even more dough
The stares you get from passerby's while taking photographs of a manhole: priceless
Strobist info: SB900 camera right, bare, zoomed to 200mm, gelled CTO, manual power of 1/2. Triggered by on-camera controller (non-contributing to the scene light). Aperture and shutter speed selected to virtually eliminate the ambient light from the scene (visible in the setup shot).
Two things I love about using this flash: side light that brings out the texture and shape, and CTO gel that renders the scene sunset-like. FUN, spelled with capitals.
You do want to see it large, or even original.

PS. A manhole....I better not say what I thought they were asking for the assignment. Let's say we're all lucky I checked an online translator before taking the photo. ;)
Anyway, I certainly believe that today's assignment was not very appealing, and I got a bunch of closeups of manholes showing every detailed crack and letters on them.
I didn't want to spend too much time on the assignment since I really was not very motivated, and while walking back home from my unfructuous 10 minute shooting spree I saw something interesting.
It was like in The Matrix: 'It's not the spoon that bends...it's you'
Well, not like that, but I thought 'the hell with the manholes, find an interesting composition and throw the darn thing in it'
Can you believe I spent another 45 minutes in the middle of the road, dodging cars, and trying to look sane when a police car stopped by and stared at me as if I was totally nuts. One of this days....
Anyway, many of us agree that there are times the assignments are veeeery dull, non motivating, or hard to get under certain conditions, but honestly, how many of us would have time to think of a subject everyday (even as ackward as there are at times) during 365 days straight!!! I'd have given up on my second week. :)
Happy photographing to all!
PPS. By the was, for postproduction I only played a little with the tone curve and highlights. All lighting is from natural light.

Found this Seattle Manhole cover in my Flickr collection. Mount Vernon Manhole Covers lack the style of this one.

Thank you Daily Shoot for making me take a look at these covers! I've only been aware of them as a nuisance when driving, like this one that is quite a bump for the tyres. But there are actually several different designs around town - I never realized!
Reason 1: A round manhole cover cannot fall through its circular opening.
Had t travel 40 miles to a meeting today and found this cover. No covers in my rural area!

after work I made just some steps around our flat and I found lots of different ways to have a look in the world under our streets.

I felt like this cover told a pretty good story today. The light was super harsh when I came across this one so I did a lot of post processing. Greatly reduced the dynamic range and boosted the contrast as much as I could. I liked the end effect.
Came across this manhole cover at the local marina. As I was composing the shot I was approached by the Harbour Master with "Are you TSSA"? Thinking I was an inspector! Well I should have said, "Yes! Let's open it up!", though instead I simply explained about my assignment.
Turns out the cover is to a fuel storage tank, holding gasoline for boats.

Manhole covers are not easy to find in semi-rural suburban areas - which is the only place I was today. We do have well caps - so took that instead.

A bit of trivia - Manhole covers are round primarily because any other shape allows the cover to slip down into the hole. The round shape prevents any chance of this.

At the risk of being 'road-kill' myself, I captured this one for its slightly colorful effect - obviously the street painter was in a decorative mood...or more likely just following the calibrated machination! Note that this sewer is sanitary...despite the oxymoron! :) Its story is also historical with the date-stamp of 1963, three years after Hurricane Donna hit the region. 4th Ave N, Naples, FL

My neighborhood this week for the NMC 2010 Summer Conference is Disneyland. Which character might the "S" be for? Oh it was the dwarf named "Sewer"?

Once again a shot taken on our yard here in Tokyo. I noticed today, there are quiet a lot of manholes around this place.

What another ridiculous theme. My heart goes out to the vast legions of non urban participants who have even fewer manhole covers than fire hydrants.

There are pretty ordinary manhole covers on my street - you don't really get a sense of time or place from them. When I want to see things in a different way, I pull out my macro lens. I zeroed in on a small segment where the cover meets the road. There's great texture there! You can even see some grains of road salt left over from last winter.

This is part of a manhole cover located right on the edge of Crockett Elementary school, which was recently razed and rebuilt. After specifically buying a house near a school, we were disappointed that the district closed the school for a year and a half to rebuild it. (After my high school nostalgia was ruined by Macarthur H.S. in San Antonio suffering the same fate, I was especially sensitive to this issue.)
But the new Crockett is actually terrific, the kids love it, and the additional space has allowed the administration to add Fifth grade, so our kids have ended up with nearly as many years of being able to walk to school as would have been the case otherwise.
