Better on B l a c k M a g i c

Todays challenge for the daily shoot was Every town, village, or city has distinguishing icons and landmarks. Make a photo of one wherever you are today.

Well in NYC there's no shortage of landmark buildings, and Icons and in my lunchtime walk I got many shots which some of which I will post in the future, but as I was walking back to the Office I looked up and saw this Sun Halo and snapped a few shots, it suffices for today's challenge as the building bottom left is the Chrysler building one of my personal favorite landmark buildings in the city

If your wondering what causes a sun Halo, I did some googling and its apparently happens when there is a thin layer of clouds with small ice crystals which refract the sun and create the rainbow like halo

Looks better on B l a c k M a g i c

Thought I wouldnt race to far away from transportation as yet, so a street shot in the city one morning on the way to work

Not sure who is followingthe world cup, but was glad to See NZ do what probably was there best performance ever if not ever for sure in a world cup with the last minute goal giving them a draw this morning

Arriva North West & Wales 1123 (L151YVK) was a 9 metre Dennis Dart with Northern Counties Paladin 35 seat bodywork. It was new to Kentish Bus & Coach, numbered 151, in March 1994, moved from Arriva Southern Counties to Arriva London in 1999 where it was numbered DS151 and was transferred to Arriva North West in 2000. It was one of six similar buses allocated to macclesfield depot in 2004.It was photographed at Macclesfield bus station on 15 February 2004.

Tonight was the opening performance of the Teen Musical Theater of Oregon production of 'The Will Rogers Follies'.

Now, this is important for three reasons:

First, my amazingly gifted son Isaac is in the cast.

Second, the production is wonderful.

Third, the show is being staged at the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater.

The Craterian, as most Medford people have called it for around 90 years, is a hub for the performing arts in our community.

The building itself was designed by noted Southern Oregon Architect Frank C. Clark and built in 1924. The original proprieter, George A. Hunt, held a contest to name the new theater and a $25 prize was awarded to the person who suggested a merging of Crater Lake and the common movie house name, Criterion.

According to the performing arts center's website, 'The grand opening was October 20, 1924. A sell-out audience of nearly 1200 came to see a play, "The Havoc" and hear music from a grand Wurlitzer organ played by Grace "Betty" Brown. Later, movie projectors were installed for silent film. Vaudeville and theatrical acts were booked, including a very young dancer named Ginger Rogers.'

The theater saw its share of successes and hard times over the next several decades. As multiplexes began to arrive on the scene, old-style theaters like the Craterian began to fall out of style.

In 1985, the historically-registered building was given to the Rogue Valley Art Association with the hope it would be transformed into a performing arts center that would inspire community and creativity in the heart of downtown Medford.

More than $5 million was pledged by individuals, businesses, foundations, and public agencies to transform the facility. Renovation and construction began in 1996 and the center opened in March of 1997.

When it came time to name the newly reinvigorated theater, it was decided that long-time Southern Oregon resident, beloved entertainer, and Academy Award-winning actress Ginger Rogers would be honored along with the original Craterian title. Rogers first came to Oregon and appeared on the stage of Hunt's Craterian on April 21, 1926, just 18 months after its grand opening. In 1940, she bought a working ranch on the Rogue River, where she spent many months each year. On November 21, 1993, 67 years after her first performance, Ginger Rogers appeared at the Craterian to benefit the theater's rebirth.

When I considered what Medford landmark to feature for today's photo, the Craterian seemed the perfect choice. I love that my son gets to share the stage with so many world-class performers in a long lineage of individuals who love bringing song and artistry and enjoyment to an enthusiastic audience.

This is definitely the "big" attraction in this small town. Maybe the only one. The single room log school house os the oldest standing school on Arizona.

www.strawberryschool.org/

It was built around 1884, at an agrreed spot between two cabins at the est and west end of the Valley.

It was in use only until 1916; later the roof rotted and was replaced by locals in the 1960s when they restored it.

The story I read at the Pine-Strawberry Museum was that in those times, chalk was pretty precious. The teacher at the time started keeping kids after school as ore chalk disappeared, as well as pencils and even jewelry.

The kids never told.

They never had anything to tell.

When they restored the roof, they found mice middens full of chalk fragments and bits of jewelry.

#ds151 - Take a picture of an icon or landmark in your town.

This is my take of a classic UVa postcard. Thomas Jefferson, the University of Virginia founder, in front of the Rotunda, the centerpiece of his original Academical Village. This view of the Rotunda seems tired to me nowadays. I've seen it too much.

The Rotunda and the University of Virginia are definitely icons and landmarks of Charlottesville. I'd guess this building has been photographed many thousands of times, and I've become sort of bored with the traditional views. This photo is my attempt this morning to show the Rotunda in a somewhat unique way.

I hiked along the 'Petun Loop' of the Bruce Trail between Blue Mountain and Osler Bluff today to Osler Castle. This 15 room summer home was built in 1893 by Toronto Lawyer Britton Bath Osler, ( the crown attorney at the trial of Louis Riel), in the hope that 'fresh air' would improve the health of his ailing wife Caroline. Caroline named the castle "Kionontio", a Petun Indian word for 'top of the hill'. Vegetation, weather, and vandals have reduced the castle to ruins. The property is currently owned by Castle Glen Estates.

* much of our public art is a little odd

Warsaw's symbol is Syrenka (mermaid). Legend has it the mermaid was caught by a merchant and then freed by the Warsaw folk. In return she promised to guard the city, hence the sword and shield.

I happen to have this glass block with the statue inside (how do they do that, btw???). I tried to lit it to give some more dimension to it, and gelled one of the flashes red to make the whole picture a bit more Polish in its nature (white and red are the Polish colors).

Strobist info: two flashes cross-lighting from the sides. The camera right flash gelled with a piece of red plastic, dialled down -1.7ev. Flashes triggered from the builtin controller in D700. Camera dialled total flash compensation at -1ev. Camera left flash zoomed at 105mm, camera right at 200mm.

I tried different angles - and this is the one I liked. Before I started to take daily photos - the Glass Blower Statue was always a season check for me. There are always flowers blooming. I wanted to get the snowdrops included today. I was surprised not to find anything but the name of the sculptor (K. Kallio, 1960) from the internet. The text engraved in the pedestal says: "Riihimäki Glass Factory and it's Employees to the Town of Riihimäki". Details of the story of Riihimäki Glass Factory (1910-1990) can be found in Finnish: fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riihim%c3%a4en_lasi

Riihimäen lasi in google pics search gives an impression of the special glass products.

PS. I have to admit that I almost dropped out today's assignment since I was out of ideas, the weather was very bad, and when I went out during the evening there was no light so all pictures looked too plain.

On my way back from dinner at my parent's house I decided to give it one last chance and go downtown and try again. Finally all I could make of is a picture of two out of four of the highest towers of the business district in Madrid.

Left: Torre de Cristal, 249 mts high, 52 stories.

Right: Torre Espacio, 224 mts high, 53 stories

PPS. Another one to try again whenever I get a fisheye.

Not the best photo ever, but I couldn't pass this up. The town where I went to highschool (and where my son has swimming lessons) has a giant tomato as the tourist booth. The booth is still closed for the season, so the surroundings are ugly. That's why I went with the partial shot here. But a giant tomato? Can't pass it up!

Nine Olympic gold medals plus three silver ones in the 1920s made Paavo Nurmi the king of long distance runners. He was born in my hometown, Turku, and our local sculptor Wäinö Aaltonen immortalised his step in this statue, where he now runs forever.

Not a black bear for UMaine, unfortunately. I believe it's a brown bear. It's on display in Nutting Hall, but there's no plaque or label that I could find.

Which pic to use today was a hard decision. Here are my other shots from the photoshoot that include photos of:

* Quincy Market

* Customs House Clock Tower

* Zakim Bridge

* and the Boston Garden (TD Garden)
