D&S train 462 departs Rockwood as it heads south (railroad timetable east) for Durango. 9-4-21

D&S 107 switches out the next days 461, which it'll pull. One of the signs of the changing times on the D&S the last several years has been the introduction of road diesels-electrics. After what I'll politely call a "mistake" with 2 custom made engines for them, D&S decided to go for a more proven model when they announced that they were acquiring 4 DL535E's from the White Pass & Yukon Route. Ordered by the White Pass in 1969, the first 7 of the 10 started being built at ALCO's Schenectady Works before the comapny folded & were sent to their Montreal Locomotive Works subsidiary. Still sporting the classic green & yellow scheme of the White Pass, this engine serves as a sign of the changing times that'll allow the D&S to continue to operate & also give us railfans a chance to now see these engines in action now without having to go to Alaska. 9-3-21

D&S train 462 descends the grade to Hermosa. I really liked this particular shot because it very much looks like it could have been shot back on the engines original territory on the White Pass & Yukon Route. 9-4-21

While the 461 trainset sits on the platform track & the centercab GE sits after switching some cars out, the crew of 464 switches out their train before putting the engine up for the night before they law out. 9-3-21

Adjusted the exposure time to be able to get away without using a tripod. There is still a lot of snow in places here and it makes it difficult to walk without having to carry more then the camera.

I hope everyone had as much fun 'playing' today as I did! I snowshoed through Loree Forest in Grey County on top of the escarpment this morning. I wanted to convey the feeling of being surrounded by trees. I used a slow shutter speed (1/4 sec) and quickly panned up the trees as I released the shutter button. It took a couple of tries to get a shot with pretty much vertical lines. (The trees looked pretty wonky in some of my discards.) I really enjoyed myself and learned some more about motion blur!

Happy 106th Dr. Seuss!

For Dr. Seuss' birthday the Seuss apps were on sale in the app store. This is the Grinch Cam app. I was surprised at the number of face in the hole layouts available.

‘Journal of a tour in the Holy Land, in May and June, 1840’ – Lady Francis Egerton, 1800-1866, illustrated by Francis Egerton, Earl of Ellesmere, 1800-1857

This extensively detailed diary records the daily experiences of a wealthy Christian Victorian couple journeying around Palestine. The emphasis lies, not on experiencing and understanding other cultures, but on religion. This is in terms both of visiting religiously significant sites and the relations between, and within, different religious groups.

I've been making my way through <a David Busch's Canon EOS Rebel T1i/500D, a very detailed book guide to my DSLR, and last night saw the description of how to enable the uber high ISO setting

At "H" I shot this detail on a quilt I got in New Zealand at ISO 12800 by very low room light (f 1.4/250). Yeah, it is super grainy, but to shoot in such low light is amazing.

The rainbow was unearthly intense at sunset after a day of rain. I'd been dorking around with the camera for today's assignment, shooting ordinary trees with the camera in "Scene mode" (I don't know what that actually does) and at ISO1600 for extra oddness. Remember, this is a point-n-shoot (Ricoh GX100), so that ISO is way out of bounds.

I got a chance to stroll around and try to capture the rainbow, but I couldn't get the wires out of the view and for the first few, I accidentally left the camera all whacked-out.

Well, and just possibly I may have accentuated the effects a bit in post-processing.

Didn't know I had this template on my phone! Crazy cute, huh? A little whining and I get this look. While I am making these noises for Smokey, I have to keep from laughing at his state of attention and remember to keep my click steady!

Daily Challenge: Find out what those buttons and dials on your camera do. Play today! Try a new setting and make a photo. (via @dibytes)

Today's Daily Shoot assignment was all about exploring the buttons and settings on my camera to try something I've never attempted before.

Well, I didn't do that.

Instead, I tried to shoot from an angle I've never used before. I hope this liberty I've taken doesn't blow my credibility, assuming I had any to begin with...

Abigael, my usually demure and gentle daughter, is a karate powerhouse. If the two of us were walking through some shady quarter of our town, any would-be attacker would definitely have more to fear from Abby than from me.

After I picked her up from her karate school this afternoon, I noticed some interesting puddles in front of the building that caught the late light of day. I asked Abigael to stand over one of them and spread her arms. As is typical of my wonderful family, she did it without questioning or complaining.

The resulting image is a little on the stark and creepy side, not at all reflective of my daughter. I love texture, though, and this shot packs a lot of different surface qualities into a relatively small space.

So there you go: A new angle for me, and my own personal bodyguard. All in all, a pretty great afternoon.

Today’s Daily Shoot assignment is:

Find out what those buttons and dials on your camera do. Play today! Try a new setting and make a photo.

There aren't a lot of buttons and dials on my current cameras, but Photoshop has a LOT of tools I never touch. So, starting with a cell-phone photo, I played in PSE and got here.

I never really used the 'bulb' shutter speed before (only once when @TobiasRitt showed it to me to see if it works...). So today I played around with it. This one turned out best.

Evidence of @jimgroom's possession (possibly by Dr. Oblivion?) and the resulting destruction of his own #ds106 family. #ds107 must save @jimgroom!

Exposed to capture both the white of the lid as well as the shadow on the desk. The cord was there for the "powered coffee" idea, but in retrospect the shot would have been better of just the cup and the shadow. Ah well, experiments are fun. :)
