Indian Ocean. Zanzibar Tanzania

This is an old boat I have photographed before which had sunk at its moorings. It seems to be slowly being broken up now as the cabin has gone, a shame as it was a good wreck.

This is a great old sailboat that hails from Snow Cove, Virginia. I found the hull shape to be very unusual for a sailboat, at least the ones I have seen. The emerald green color really stood out in this marina of dry docked boats.

There was a man working on the back of the boat. I asked if I could take some pictures and he asked if I would like to buy the boat? He said yes and I said No!

Well, maybe the boat’s not leaving today, but soon!

During WWII, Mare Island Naval Shipyard reached peak capacity for shipbuilding, repair, overhaul, and maintenance of many different kinds of seagoing vessels including both surface combatants and submarines.

Up to 50,000 workers were employed. Mare Island even received Royal Navy cruisers and destroyers and four Soviet Navy subs for service. Following the War, MINSY was considered to be one of the primary stations for construction and maintenance of the Navy's Pacific fleet of submarines, having built seventeen submarines and four submarine tenders by the end of hostilities.

This was a dry dock when it was part of the Royal Navy Dockyard, its now been redeveloped with flats and restaurants

Been wanting to post this back in November when I got the image but was too busy.

This dry docked old wreck of a ship has been sitting at the marina for a few years. I took a similar shot bout a tear or two ago - but it did not meet my quality. On this one I could not resist the sky

Heavy maintenance in Mallaig harbour.

Scott Haefner somehow wrangled access to the BAE shipyard and drydocks in San Francisco and invited me along for a night of shooting.

I could not get my head around the epic scale of this ship- the "Jean Anne," a car carrier that was in for minor repairs. It was the largest thing I have ever seen.

Night, tons of mixed ambient lighting. Composite of 30 and 60 second shots.

Eye-poppingly big.

Dry dock on Mare Island with twin cranes. No easy way to get this shot - had to stand up on the tall foot of another crane, then hold the camera out at arms length over a chain link fence and shoot semi-blind.

Under a state highway I found this boatyard on Google maps satellite view. Belongs to an Alaska fisheries company. I went to their office and was denied access to the yard but was able to capture this with my camera lens pushed between strands of barbed wire.

These giant cranes at Inchgreen Drydock in Greenock were demolished in 2017.

Sad to see these giant creatures go, definitely the end of an era.

Inchgreen was built in the early 1960s by the Firth of Clyde Dry Dock Company at a cost of £4.25million.

At the time it was one of the largest dry docks in the world and could accommodate ships of up to 150,000 tons.

Following her launch at John Brown’s Clydebank yard in September 1967, the QE2, left, sailed downriver to Inchgreen for fitting-out.

The current owners, Peel Ports seem to have no interest in the docks. A campaign to save the docks has been launched.

This year is shaping up to be an amazing Iceberg year. I've lived back on the island now for 4 years and this is the first time I've been able to photograph them. I spotted this one only 10mins from my house. I took my family out to see it saturday morning which was foggy/rainy and snowy but it allowed me to create this dramatic looking image.

I shot three vertical images using my 200-400mm lens and put them together manually. The detail in the large image will be perfect for a nice size print. To top it all off if you look closely you can see a Herring Gull sitting right on the middle peak :)

More Iceberg shots to come I hope...

This looks like the iron clad vessels of the 1850’s. But alas, it is only a grey sailboat with its back open to repair the motor.
