"Just about to go…
just about to go my…
Just about to go myself!"
I've got cowboys and farmers in my genetic code back generations. Uncles who raised American Quarter horses, another who broke multiple bones on the rodeo circuit courtesy of spinning bramha bulls. Including my father they were all also pilots and motorcycle jockeys and mechanics, all-around characters. Family language is peppered with pithy cowboy/farmer/aviation and biker sayings. This song in particular reminds me of what it means in my family to say: "I'm riding the point." James Taylor rides way out in front in the poetry of his lyrics and music. In "Slap Leather" he's out there hunting for 'sacred cows' to turn into tasty hamburgers.

In light of 808 day (august 8th), here's my take on the classic drum machine used in so many music productions.
Curious how it sounds? Listen to Marvin Gay's Sexual Healing for instance:

Along with "Edo Rock City", "Keytar" was a deliberate move away from hip hop imagery. While the subject matter was very popular, I felt I was being boxed in by it, and I'm very loathe to approach anything I might find cliche.
Admittedly, this is a very over-the-top piece, but that's what 80's fashion was and that's what I went for. I did these two pieces as a study of 80's culture that was decidedly not hip hop oriented. I'm trying to move beyond immediately recognizable imagery now, making the viewer work a little harder for recognition of disparate elements, while still creating a thing of beauty.
