I decided it was time to get my photographic mojo back with a trip to the Lake District. But first a visit to a location that's been on my list for sometime....this copse of trees just off the road to Malham at Eshton in the Dales. Having got up at 4 am to drive from Lincolnshire I lucked out, coming up through Gargrave there was mist and a hint of colour in the sky. Alas this copse sits higher up the valley and rather than mist there was just some haze. The sun rose to the right but was hidden by a bank of cloud, but provided lovely muted sunrise tones.

Why Drumlin Copse? The landscape is post glacial here, in the last ice age retreating glaciers dropped mounds of sediment, called Drumlins, and I think this copse sits on one. The copse sits in isolation, it almost looks like a CGI, but it exists. More photos to come of this magical location in changing light....

These marigolds are growing in a long row at Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary, which also has a large flower field.

This is one of the few black sheep in the herd at Drumlin Farm animal sanctuary. He has very soft wool, which felt nice as I gave him pats.

Rossilly Island, Donegal Bay, County Donegal, Ireland

On a recent visit to this stunning bay close to Donegal town, I was taken by surprise on what I found. Whilst flying around to align up my visualised scene of the bay, I was suddenly greeted by this stunning island below. As you can see it is shaped almost like a perfect giant green heart 💚

I felt this photo was fitting considering it's ‘Valentines Day’. So this is my Valentine’s card today, showing how much I love Ireland’s landscapes.

There's always a surprise to be found and adored by those who wish to seek it out 🙏

I went to Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary today to photograph the foxes and other animals. This was taken through a chain-link fence, with my flash cranked up.

Drumlins formed by glacial activity many moons ago

Muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) run through an arctic meadow by a glacial drumlin. The herd was very shy and hard to get close to without spooking them. Glacial drumlins are elongated hills in the shape of a half-buried egg formed by glacial ice acting on underlying unconsolidated till. The direction of glacial flow in this image was from right (steeper side) to left. Rypefjord, Scoresby Sund, Greenland.

Titus is enjoying some crab grass at Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary. I visited there today, despite the hot and muggy weather. He's a sweetheart, and loves pats and scratchies.

I visited Drumlin Farm animal sanctuary today, and found a flock of sheep grazing near the parking lot. This one was near the fencing, and enjoyed lots of good pats.

Drumlins near Hirzel, Switzerland

Thank you very much for all your favs and comments!

This yearling sheep is relaxing in the barn on a hot and muggy day at Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary, an Audubon property. She saw me patting sheep close to the fencing, and came over to enjoy some for herself.

Single trees on drumlins in the Hirzel/Menzingen area in Switzerland.

Linden trees like these were planted on special occasions like the birth of the first son by the local landlords.

Drumlins are relics of the ice age. They are little hills of glacial material with a typical height of 10 to 40m. In the Hirzel/Menzingen area the movement of the ancient Linth glacier formed these witnesses of the last ice age.

The special effect of this photo was achieved by the use of a (software) infrared filter in post production.

Titus, a Boer goat at Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary, is hoping that I'll give him some weeds on the other side of the fence, where I'm standing. Sorry, Titus, I'm busy getting this shot!

An eastbound Chicago & North Western inspection train passes through an autumn dairyland between Helenville and Sullivan, Wisconsin, in October 1983. C&NW EMD F7 Nos. 401 and 402 power the short three-car train. This route was abandoned shortly after this photo, and is now used by a different mode of transportation as the Glacial Drumlin State Trail.

The sheep herd at Drumlin Farm animal sanctuary was grazing near the parking lot today, so I visited them first. I often find them in the barn, so it was nice to see them doing their thing.

I visited Drumlin Farm today, hoping to find some butterflies in their flower field. There's a new electric fence up this year, but I was able to duck under to get to the flowers. I did get a decent shock, though!

This monarch was chasing a black swallowtail around, when not feeding on the many zinnias.

Fading evening light at the eerie Moat Knowe, High Baltersan. Looking like a scene for an M.R. James tale.

This is the Ling Hut in Glen Torridon. The hillocks are actually Drumlins, which were left there when the glaciers retreated at the end of the last ice age. I've tried to capture them before, but the light really made them stand out this time.

I visited Audubon's Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary today, and the foxes were a big draw. They're rescue foxes, perhaps raised as orphans. This fox often watches visitors from this spot.

This sheep at Drumlin Farm is curious about my camera, and also wants pats. I'm poking my arms through the wooden fence on the left. She has very thick and luxurious wool. I'll have to find out what the farm does with the sheeps' fiber.

After visiting the animals and the flower field, I found this monarch enjoying some iron weed by the gift shop at Drumlin Farm Wildlife sanctuary today. I was going to buy a T-shirt, but I have all their offerings. I bought a canned espresso to fire me up for the Habitat goats.

The southern part of the county is Appalachian Plateau, with high hills rising at the southern edge of Syracuse. This is the eastern part of the Finger Lakes region. Skaneateles Lake and Otisco Lake are both in Onondaga County. US 20 extends east and west across the county, traversing dramatic hill-and-valley terrain. Between the lake plain and Appalachian highlands is a zone noted for drumlins, smaller, scattered hills formed as mounds of debris left by the last glacier. 0

I was excited to photograph my first outdoor butterfly today, this red admiral visiting a native monarda blossom at Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary.

Although disappointed with the lack of snow, still cannot get enough of this location. It seems to have something to offer regardless of the weather

This part of the Glacial Drumlin State Trail in Jefferson County, Wisconsin used to be the Chicago & North Western (C&NW) railway, which extended from Madison to Milwaukee. The trail opened in 1986.

It was a dull and overcast day, completely the opposite of the previous day, so I decided to head home. On reflection, I should have held out because the lakes are looking beautiful and the weather undoubtebly changed. Call me impatient.

This young goat was bleating for her supper when she saw me admiring her. I think she's a year old, and is just growing her horns. She was much smaller when I last visited Drumlin Farm.

Up and back: redoing a walk on the Glacial Drumlin State Trail

A cool 54-degree morning created this gorgeous landscape in Jefferson County, WI.

The last Ice Age did a number on our part of the country, creating many drumlins, or ridges, running parallel to each other. Low-lying fog makes these easy to see from high above the ground.

Another golden hour shot looking over the drumlins towards the city of Belfast the other evening. From the same viewpoint as my last post.

A wonderful area in Lancaster, MA. Dexter Drumlin is a glacial feature leftover from the last ice age.
