Inter-City Cactus & Succulent Show

Los Angeles County Arboretum

Arcadia, CA

August 17, 2013

I was finally able to visit The Succulent Cafe in Oceanside today, they are located at 322 N Cleveland St, in Oceanside, CA. I had been dying to go, I follow them on instagram and just had not gotten over there. There were tons of succulents, and gardens to purchase along with Teas and Coffees. The owner was super friendly and the joint is wall to wall succulents I was so excited to be there. There were huge living walls, and vertical gardens. I snapped a bazillion pics and enjoyed every second! I enjoyed a delicious iced tea of the day, and cannot wait until my next visit!!!

Baja Spurge - Euphorbia xanti blooming in June 2010. Native endemic to Baja California. Baja Spurge grows as stalks, then spreads by rhizomes to form dense colonies. Smooth green branches are nice contrast to bushy shrubs. Give room to spread. Baja Spurge is drought tolerant, and likes full sun. Semi - evergreen plant. Naturally grows on sea bluffs, coast dunes, and rocky slopes.

Bees search for nectar on flowers that bloom on many of the succulents at Los Angeles Air Force Base. LAAFB's 61st Civil Engineering and Logistics Squadron uses drought-tolerant plants and landscaping known as "xeriscaping" to minimize water use as part of Air Force resource conservation efforts. Many xeriscaped areas on the base are only watered once a month or not at all. (U.S. Air Force photo by Sarah Corrice/RELEASED.)

As part of his ongoing work to “green the Valley,” Councilmember Bob Blumenfield broke ground at the Blumenfield Water-Wise Demonstration Garden at the West Valley Municipal Center in Reseda.

The project, a partnership between Blumenfield’s office, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) and the Department of Recreation and Parks and the Department of General Services, will replace 20,000 square feet of thirsty lawn at the West Valley Municipal Center and neighboring West Valley Library with a variety of California friendly landscaping options.

Another chance to tell a second-hand story of Bruce Goff's tenure at the University of Oklahoma (while using a really obscure word).

Zamia furfuracea is a cycad native to southeastern Veracruz state in eastern Mexico. Although not a palm tree (Arecaceae), its growth habit is superficially similar to a palm; therefore it is commonly known as "Cardboard Palm" but the alternate name Cardboard Cycad is preferable. Other names include Cardboard Plant, Cardboard Sago, Jamaican Sago and Mexican Cycad (from Mexican Spanish Cícada Mexicana). The plant's binomial name comes from the Latin zamia, for "pine nut", and furfuracea, meaning "mealy" or "scurfy".

All parts of the plant are poisonous to animals and humans. The toxicity causes liver and kidney failure, as well as eventual paralysis. Dehydration sets in very quickly. No treatment for the poisoning is currently known.
