Asterales Asteraceae Gazania. Named for Theodorus Gaza (15th century scholar/translator), this flower opens during the daylight sunshine and furls at night. Displayed as a part of a container garden at Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. One of the most exquisite wildflowers I have seen and very complex.

Due to the lack of normal rainfall in our part of the world, drought tolerant plants such as cactus and succulents have become increasingly popular landscaping and garden options in recent years. As a result, I've had a lot of new photographic subjects to exploit, such as this fine specimen at my sister's house. This is a small plant, and what appear to be green stones are leaves.

This was lit with a YN560 in a hand held 8.6 inch Lastolite softbox at camera right, and just out the frame. The flash, in manual mode, was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. I photographed this indoors, and with the camera settings that I used, anything not hit by the light from the flash went dark. Anything that received some light and that I din't want in the picture, got painted out with a black brush in Photoshop. it's another of the many benefits of a black background. You just paint out the distractions.

Other pictures that I've taken of succulents are in my Cactus and Succulents set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157633383093236/
