About 10 years ago, we planted three fairly substantial Agave attenuatas and this is the first that's starting to bloom. It's framed by a variegated agave, an Aloe Vera and a Pride of Madeira echium.
Detailed shot of a Woolly Blue Curls. This Californian native from the mint family is a new acquisition for our backyard garden. I'm going a bit more native this year.

Great perennial native to the North American plains. Slow to emerge from the ground (mine doesn't appear until June), this plant grows about 18" tall a with a 3-4 foot spread. The deep tap root makes it very drought tolerant, but difficult to transplant. Trumpet-shaped magenta flowers open every day and close in the evening, from August to frost.
A brilliant Gazania flower :O).
"Treasure Flower, or Gazania, is a great drought tolerant annual flower. It typically grows 6 to 12 inches tall and thrives in the heat of the summer. Not to say it needs no water, but it is more understanding if you forget on occasion. Blooms all summer."

Agave in full sun in our patio garden. Newly acquired and part of a garden makeover using sustainable plantings. I used to grow a few of these in our first years on this property. There is a colorful story and photo posted about my relationship to this plant.

Looks like it's wearing a fez! This plant is native to southeastern Bahia state in Brazil, where it is listed as 'critically endangered' (one step above 'extinct in the wild') due to loss of its dry savanna habitat.
One of the more unusual of many specimens in the indoor Desert Conservatory at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California.
Flannel Bush - Fremontodendron growing on site at Las Pilitas California Native Plant Nursery in Escondido California. Native to southwestern United States and northwest Mexico.
This could be 'Pacific Sunset' Flannel bush because of its size. Thrives in sandy, well draining soil on slopes. Very sensitive to overwatering once established. One summer soak past it's 2nd or 3rd year can kill it supposedly. So it's good for any Southwest, Mediterranean, Xeriscape, or Low Water Garden. Requires full sun and plenty of space to grow. I planted one in our yard and it grew a foot in every direction within two months. I know it's going to stand out from the street! Overall appearance of Flannel Bush is strikingly beautiful to me and I hope our neighbors won't mind giving up some view to look at it. Flannel bushes make beautiful hedges, screens or barrier plants. Large, thick bright yellow flowers cover the plant even when it's just 2 feet off the ground. Some people with sensitive skin may develop mild irritation at the site where contact is made with the fuzzy seed pods. The leaves have a leathery and fuzzy texture reminiscent of flannel cloth.

Ruth Kamula, a community-based seed producer in Kiboko, Kenya, planted KDV-1, a drought tolerant (DT) seed maize variety developed with the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) as part of CIMMYT's Drought Tolerant Maize for Africa (DTMA) project. "I am trying my hand at DT maize seed production because it will lift me and my family out of poverty. It is our lifeline during this time of drought," she says. (June 2009)

Asteraceae Encelia farinosa. A brittlebush flower (floret) on display in the Mojave Desert at Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The yellow flowers look fantastic with the backdrop of grey foliage.
