For years I've driven past the Little Colorado overlook and never entered, partly due to the shabby appearance of the park and partly out of a rush to get to the Grand Canyon itself. This time, there was no hurry. A short paved road leads to a dirt parking lot with adjacent stalls selling Navajo crafts and etc. A white tongue of rock thrusts a hundred feet into the gorge and onlookers can lean over the blue-painted steel rail and gawk at the thousand-foot drop to the river itself, which appears to have the color and viscosity of chocolate milk. Magnificent.
