KCS 5020 south, GKCIHI 13
And that's a wrap. Was it worth wasting my last few hours of RSIA on KCS? Probably not. Was it worth it in order to capture a photo of KCS on their last day of operations as an independent railroad? Also probably not. In any case, it was kind of cool, I guess. I won't bore you all with a backstory of what this railroad means to me. Simply because it isn't relevant to me. I spent most of my childhood on the UP and the aforementioned MNA. KCS was always just a fallback railroad to watch when the others weren't busy. That being said, I'm sure it will be some time before the image of KCS is gone forever (so stop calling them CPKC units, you didn't call Santa Fe locomotives BNSF immediately on September 22nd in 1995, did you?) I'm definitely not going to miss the bleached and faded ES44's that smell like the toilet hasn't been emptied in 3 Goddamn years (but hey, anything is better than an NS unit.)
Continuing the chase south down the Pittsburg Sub, the north end of the Kansas City Southern's historic original mainline we again see MKCSH28 (manifest Kansas City to Shreveport) with five matching Southern Belles, three GEs and two EMDs led by AC4400CW 4604 (blt. Nov. 1999 as KCS 2029).
There was a long delay between the prior shot in this series and this one as they took siding for a meet with their northbound MSHKC counterpart at Jaudon who was held up waiting for a track gang to clear up in the house track just north of this location. Back on the move again, they are approaching the Lone Pine Road crossing at MP 53.4

An old mansion (or something) on Drexel Boulevard in Kenwood, Chicago. Unfortunately a cheap looking apartment building was built around the place.
CP 7437 is southbound on the CPKC Pittsburg Sub (former KCS) between Kansas City and Pittsburg, Kansas
After delivering cars to CN's Fordham Yard on the former IC main, ex-Conrail GP10 number 7570 shoves back into the industrial spurs near Drexel Ave & 90th St (the intersection marked on the street signs to the right of the engine) in Chicago's Burnside neighborhood. I arrived at my vantage point just as the unit was shoving back, and never saw it again.
The classy-looking unit was most recently owned by the Illinois Western / Effingham Railroad, and began life as a Pennsy GP9.

There's an almost identical shot of this on my blog, in which I used flash, if you saw it and were wondering why I posted it both places. I like them both and couldn't decide.
"Rudy" and the rest of the Kansas City Southern Holiday Express compete with a stunning sunset to light up Drexel, MO on a chilly December evening.
