Dean Tape Measures. Made in England.
The company was founded in Newington, South London, by Edward Dean who advertised himself in 1846/51 as a 'tailor's measure maker' and in 1861, as a measuring tape maker.
Originally he worked with his father who was a carpenter making builder's measures.
The tape measure belonged to my grandmother who I remember used it when dressmaking and knitting back in the 50's and 60's It's seen better days but has stood the test of time.

I'm sure I'm not the only sewer (that word just doesn't seem right btw) who has been saved when losing a pin or needle on the floor...
The Magnetic properties of these scissors is very useful!
Dressmaking scissors hung with three 1" pins hanging off the blades. Every time I tried to arrange my full selection of pins, they would start falling off, so three will have to do.
Backdrop is the next fabric I plan to sew into something.
I remember as an NHS physio hearing of someone who unknowingly knelt on a needle stuck in their carpet. An X-Ray for persisting knee pain and inexplicable intermittent joint locking some months later showed the culprit sitting within the joint space!

When I was a little girl, my mother used to make all my clothes. She would put me on the the table and tell me to stand still and keep my tummy in. I did try both! She put on a new unfinished dress and started to put lots and lots of pins in me, it tickeld a lot.

This extraordinary Stick-Eastlake, single-family residence is named for Sarah Mish who managed a dressmaking and millinery business.
I can't even describe what it is. It's an 'embellishment' ... for something or other. I do know that it's tiny (less than ½" across at its widest point) and that it's on top of a pincushion I bought at the Lewes Flea Market yesterday. Ahem, among other things. What a fascinating place to wander around. :)

A light-painted still-life that I did today, featuring some very large dressmaking scissors that I bought recently.
two white and yellow linen tops finished ready to iron, two taupe linen tops on the table with bias binding necklines pinned ready to machine, and yellow and white dress with skirt pinned to bodice, and pleats pinned. one of the taupe tops will eventually have a skirt attached for it to become a dress
the yellow and white dress has much work to be done to it before completion. this is really a mock up to give me an idea of what i'm aiming for. the pockets have also to be fitted
i'm a size 14. these are loose fitting clothes. the fabric is bought from charity shops. the length of yellow and white linen was brand new £8. the taupe linen was new linen curtains £8, not used. thread by gutermann from john lewis

spring/autumn linen coat with pockets on the side seams finished and ready to wear, maybe tomorrow. i'll keep an eye on the weather
finally lined, tricky but doable, two button holes made, practised quite a few times before attempting on the coat, fearful that i could mess it up right at the end. thankfully ok and two buttons covered in the same fabric and stitched onto the coat

today i finished this yellow and white striped linen dress. i didn't have enough fabric for the correct width of the skirt. i had to cut out panels and sew them together. the front of the skirt is made of five panels and the back has two panels. a steep learning curve because of the fabric pattern but managed it in the end. this time i remembered to attach the pockets to the side seams :)

it was challenging but once i was focussed it was fun to do. there are many imperfections but i've got to start somewhere. success for me is would i feel happy wearing the finished garment to the shops? if the answer is yes then that'll do.
a cream linen dress is next to be finished then i'll begin the coat.
i'm going to make a mock up of the coat first before buying the fabric. the cream cotton/polyester fabric under the orange handled scissors will be used for this purpose.

seen as we explored the streets of New Westminster. I know this building is old but cannot find anything about it in the usual places. The address is 704 Clarkson Street and is currently the home of Atelier Endeavour, a dressmaking business.

When I began looking at the dressmaking pins I had I found there were different types. Bead heads, flat heads and these roundheads were my favourites. Although a rogue flat head did creep in to the photo. HMM everyone.

or has the word become politically uncorrect? I notice that everyone is saying sewists or sewers (which just looks wrong). Dressmaking doesn't necessarily refer only to dresses - you can get dressed in anything.
Anyway, I am trying to convert a horrible dress bought online that looks more like a duvet cover with a V-shape for the neckline into a wearable dress using a paper pattern. The photo is for utata iron photographer 335 which requires:
1 Embedded/implanted/stuck
2 Paper
3 Warm lighting
Can I say that the bubbles are embedded in the glass paperweight? or the pins embedded in the pattern and fabric?

This is the perfect room for an inquisitive kitten. Almost 40 years of stuff all stored away in a spare bedroom material and wool being the bulk of it. Of course Finn found the wool I now have several balls of it all over the living room floor. Found a pot of dressmaking pins, with a couple more taps with the paw they would have been all over the carpet then no doubt a few ‘ouches’ being yelled from her Pebbles and myself as Pebbles loves this room too. It is a relief to see Finn chilling here in her cubby hole so I can get on with my tidying. Mind you her mind never stops looking for the next bit of mischief
