Tied up in the port of Malaga, this U boat is the subject of an amazing bit of video on U tube, German Submarine S196 in trouble.. Her call sign is DRDK
Identification and logo on the sail of the German submarine U 17 (pennant number S196, call sign DRDK) visiting the city of Bergen on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Norwegian submarine branch.
U17 is a German submarine of Type 206A, a class of diesel-electric submarines (U-boats) developed by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche-Werft AG (HDW). Its design is based on the preceding Type 205 submarine class. These small and agile submarines were built during the Cold War to operate in the shallow Baltic Sea and attack Warsaw Pact shipping if the war turned hot. The pressure hulls were built out of non-magnetic steel to counter the threat of magnetic naval mines and make detection with MAD sensors more difficult.
