Brihadeeshwara temple

The inner walls of the Kailasanathar temple complex contain a series of meditation chambers. These chambers contain exquisite stone carved sculptures. Originally they also had beautiful frescoes such as the example in this photograph. However, as the elderly and very erudite temple priest informed us, the authorities have done an abysmal job in maintaining these priceless treasures - by covering everything in thick layers of ordinary plaster. Consequently none of the frescoes are intact, the few that remain are in this condition.
